op date

I went on the NHS list for a hiatus/hernia repair and Nissen's Fundoplication in November and was told the waiting list was 3-6 months. When I phoned last week after 3 months I was told 6-8 months. I decided, reluctantly to go private and I am having my op on the 9th March. Scared but just want to get it over with and start the recovery process.

I think your problem was that once you got on the list you stopped complaining that you were having a bad time, in future remind Doctors that you are suffering at every available opportunity otherwise you'll get bumped :D

Private must cost a packet (I'm wondering / thinking that you might be able to claim some of the costs back but I'm not sure) , anyway, I hope it goes well for ya smile

It is costing a packet. I am nervous but fed up of feeling unwell. I thought having my gallbladder out would solve things but others things were going on. I am glad I did have the gallbladder out, however, as I am free of the very painful attacks and infected on can cause.

Thanks for your good wishes and continuing support. Hope you are keeping well.

Hi all. Had my op on the 9th. The 1 and a half op took 5 hours and I was down at theatre for 6. Spent the night in HDU. My stomach and membrane was almost totally in the chest, was twisted and had attached itself to the heart, lungs and chest It took 3 hours to separate it before the hernia repair and fundoplication could be done. It gave the family a scare. I came home on Saturday. I have very little pain but lots of wind! Obviously I am very tired. The surgeon said he had only seen 4 like it and the anaethisist said it was the worst he had seen. Am eating soup, jelly, creme caramels and crackerbread without difficulty.

So glad we decided to go private as having to wait another possible 6 - 8 months , after the 3 moths I have waited on NHS already, might have meant I would not have been so lucky.

Please don't let anyone be put off by this. My symptoms have been particularly bad for 3 years and it has taken until now to find the real problem. The op is no where near as bad as I thought. I had a catheter and stomach drain but again very little pain. Expect wind pain in the shoulders. On the road to recovery and a better life!

I know what you mean. I wish you a good recovery. Had mine done on the 9th. Had my stitches out today. I have had very few problems considering the complications I had. I have no trouble swallowing, am able to manage soups, jellies, crackerbread, cheese slices and pate. Feel very hungry though. Just beginning to be aware of the tightness around the strenum but this is to be expected.. So far the great thing is no reflux of acid or food and no vomitting. (Fingers crossed). I can't wait to be recovered and get on with life. All though I have suffered since my late teens the past 3 years have been hell. If you know you have to have this op do not delay.

Hope you continue to improve. I really researched this op well and although I had complications I can honestly say that I have very few problems. I have been able to swallow easily since day one and have had very little pain. I am still keeping to soft foods and although they say you can't burp after the op I find I most certainly can. In fact wind has been the only problem. Everyone says that although I am pale I look better than I have done for a while. It's just learning to take things slowly.

Had a bit of a scare. Developed a sore right leg over the last few days. There is a lump in my calf and the leg from calf to ankle is going pink. Immediately wondered if I had a DVT and the surgery got me in to see a GP pronto. He is almost sure that it is not a DVT and that it is possibly phlebitis. I have had enlarged varicose veins for some time. He has given me a course of antibiotics and Ibuprofen (so back on the Omeprazole to counteract the effects of the Ibuprofen on the stomach). I have to see him first thing tomorrow. I felt sick with worry and the pain has been very uncomfortable but after just a few tablets it feels better but still painful when walking.

Otherwise recovery still continuing to go well. Hey ho.

Gosh what a state you were in, very lucky indeed, no wonder you were prepared to do / pay anything to get sorted, I hope you'll be putting on a lot (within reason) of weight soon, getting all that lovely scran down there :D Hope you continue to improve smile

Leg feeling much better and lump is smaller and with very little inflamation. Progressing well. Must remember that I have to eat little and often. Lunch time I just ate either a little too much or the wrong thing (food too hard) and the chest pain is horrible. Otherwise I have had no difficulty eating soft foods and I feel hungry which is great!

Getting frustrated at not being to do normal actitivies but I am nearly there.

Hi it's me again. Saw my surgeon on Monday and he has given me the all clear. I am free to do what I want and to eat what I want. He says I will still have some twinges but that is all part of the healing process. I can't believe that I have got away with it so easily given the complications I had.

I would again say to anyone contemplating this op:

make sure you have a good surgeon

give yourself time to rest and recover in the first 6 weeks

eat soft foods and light crackerbreads, jelly, custard etc.

drink and eat slowly and small quanties

    chew, chew, chew your food

So far I have had no acid or food reflux and I am off the Omeprazole. My food goes down easily and I have no problems swallowing. You will not need big quantities of food to make you feel satisfied

    All the best to everyone.
