Open sugary help for ovary cyst 10cm ish

Posted , 6 users are following.

I have a cyst on my ovary about 10cms and they have already said that I will need an op. I am due to see doctor in 2 weeks time but I'm just wondering what people's experiences are on open sugary to remove a cyst that big?

I'm worried about having the op!

What happens?

How long is recovery?

How long will I stay in hosptail for?

And any other advice of

Things I should know would be grateful.

    Hi

I had a 12 cm cyst removed last year.

I had it removed by Laparotomy. As it was to big to be removed by key hole.

I am 42 and quite fit but looked 9 months pregnant so was so relieved to have it removed I didn’t care how the took it out.

The recovery was tough but again it depends on much you rest and try to take it easy.

I was home from hospital 2 days after surgery and it took 5 weeks to be able to drive again.

I could work out again about 8 weeks later.

In all honesty I would go through it all again just to get rid of the cyst. It was worth it to get back to normal. I am a year over it now and feel great and back to myself again.

    Good luck and speedy recovery.

Take as much time afterwards to recover and don’t rush back to work. I have 2 young kids so resting isn’t always easy but you’re body lets you know when you need to rest.

Thank you so much for your reply!!

I am 23 years old. I'm thinking mine is too big for keyhole but won't know for certain for another 2 weeks. Was your a simple cyst??

Having an op worries me. But I'll be so glad once it's gone.

I look pregnant and I hate it 😞

Home after 2 days? That's a lot quicker then I thought it would be.

I don't drive so have to walk everywhere plus buses so how soon would I be able to walk about 20mins walk?

I am so bad at resting so that will be hard work!

We're you discharged from hosptail with painkillers if so what?? If not what did you take?

How long were you in pain for?

Sounds like I'll be pretty much housebound for a bit.

I'm so glad your recovery has gone so well!

Is the op straight forward? I'm worried something will go wrong.

Hi walking will take a little while but I would say I was doing short walks after about a week to 10 days.

I think it was a simple cyst. I can’t remember what they told me as I was high on morphine lol!

The op is the easy part. You go to sleep and wake up and you aren’t in pain as they give you morphine on a drip usually, so you control your pain.

I was given a couple of different pain killers to take at home.

The thing to watch out for is trapped wind and constipation! Not nice things to talk about but it will happen. Peppermint drinks are good and ask your nurses when in hospital and they will get that for you and ask them about what’s ok to take to help with going to toilet as laxatives aren’t good for you after a stomach op.

You will be house bound for a bit. So prepare before you go in. Get handy thing to cook. Hopefully you have someone to help you out the first few days.

Honestly you will be so relieved it’s over and have time to relax. Everyone is different but just think in not to distant future it will be all over and you will be back to yourself.

It will be hard but you will surprise yourself how tough you are when it’s over.

Oh that's good they give morphine in a drip! Oh is it on a machine you can control??

I was wondering about constipation and what's best to take. I should have someone who could help me.

How long were you in pain for?

Food wise did you have any issues with certain things you couldnt eat or the amount ?

I'll make sure I have plenty to do at home then.

I just want the cyst gone!

Thank you so much and I am so sorry about all the questions !!

      Xx

If you take you’re pain killers regularly you shouldn’t be in too much pain. I was uncomfortable for about 10 days but never in severe pain. I took my painkillers on time and was able to sleep ok as well. Definitely ask nurse or doctor about what to take for helping with going to toilet. That’s the uncomfortable part. Yes I am in the uk and they usually give you morphine on a drop for first 24 hours. Hopefully you will get key hole surgery and you will be up and about quicker and be more mobile.

I totally understand your worries. I was diagnosed with a 10 cm ovarian tumor. I think I Googled everything to be prepared for the worse. I had an amazing Oncologist  surgeon. Because of the size of the tumor and my previous C sections, I was cut vertical under my belly button (laparotomy). I was only on a low dose of IV pain medicine the first day. Then I was given oral meds. I went home on the third day. I only needed the pain meds for two days at home, then I was good with over the counter meds. I was able to walk and get around fine. I could drive after about a week, but it’s better to wait two. Just don’t over do it  so you avoid any complications with your incision. The life saver was the waist girdle thing my doctor had put on me after surgery, it helps hold everything in, definitely ask for one! Everyone recovers differently, it was easy for me the doctor said because I was in good physical shape. It will be two weeks tomorrow. My insicion looks great, he closed it from the inside so it just looks like someone drew a line with a pencil. I was really surprised when I saw it.  I can go back to work as long as I don’t do anything strenuous. The best news was I didn’t need a hysterectomy because the tumor was not cancerous, but he did remove my ovaries so this doesn’t happen again and because I am 51 and done having children.

As for constipation you will get some gas cramps the first few days and will take about 5 days for things to start moving again (gas pills and stool softener and a small bowl of Raisin Bran in the evening). I hope all goes as well for you! Just think positive!

I have also used google which is the worse thing!

They said mine from a ultra sound looks like a simple cyst. I had a ct scan yesterday and have had bloods down which are all normal thank god.

      What's a wasit girdle??

Thank you so much for your comments I am only 23 but am worrying it's going to be cancerous

A waist girdle is like a corset type thing that you wrap around your waist and it has Velcro on the end to secure it kind of like a waist trainer which you can buy if doctor doesn’t give you one (ask Dr about one) It helps if you have to cut an incision. It gives you support to get up out of bed too.

Usually the reports and tests are accurate so trust in that it’s only a cyst. Mine looked complex and felt hard so the doctor prepared for cancer but still assured me if it was he suspected low malignancy because some cysts are this way and my bloodwork was good and the MRI didn’t show swollen lymph nodes or fluid in my abdomen. Lucky it was the exact cyst predicted on the MRI but not malignant.

Also the longer you stay on the pain meds the longer constipation may last!

But I wouldn’t worry I would definitely manage your pain first and worry about the constipation after. It sounds like they could do the labrascopy on you which is the simpler way to go.

Oh okay I know what you mean now.

So I should trust in that it's just a cyst??

From the ultra sound report I was told the following....

      -looks like a simple cyst

-doesn't show any lumps or bumps

      -it is round

-doesn't seem to have a blood supply

I also have free fluid on my right side which is the same side as the cyst. My GP said the free fluid is coming from the cyst where it has got so big. So I am guessing this free fluid means that the cyst is fluid base which means a simple cyst?

      I'm only 23 years old.

    Hi Holly,

Do you know what kind of cyst it is?

I ask as I had a 10cm cyst on imaging which then turned out to be bigger in the operation but I had mine removed by keyhole so i suppose depending on the cyst type open surgery may not be necessary, it may we worth expressing to the Dr that you would prefer keyhole if there are no reasons why that may not be possible.

My laparoscopy was pretty easy, I was sore the day of, in pain with the gas the next couple of days but was up after 2 days doing light chores and was moving about fine within a week, i had a weird pulling sensation that lasted about a month but that was from the internal stitches I think. Now i can barely find the scars they are so minimal.

Mine was a chocolate cyst so im not sure if the type of cyst dictates whether you need open or not.

Try no to worry and push for keyhole if its a viable option.

      Hi charlottle,

From my ultra sound scan I am being told it looks like a simple cyst. I had ct scan yesterday and have had bloods for tumor markers and other bloods which are all normal.

      What's a chocolate cyst??

I am going to try and have keyhole but I guess if they think open is better that's what I'm best doing.

I'm worrying that it's cancerous despite me having bloods which are all normal, also being told that my cyst ...

      -looks like simple cyst

      -it's round

-doesnt seem to have blood supply

-doesn't seem to Have any lumps or bumps

Which i was told was that all those things are postive

    Hi Holly,

A chocolate cyst is an endemtrioma which is basically a blood filled cyst caused by endemtriosis, they are called chocolate because the blood is dark, pretty gross.

Really try not to worry, cancerous cysts are so rare especially if you are pre menopause, you have had your blood tests back and that is good so I am sure that ur cyst is just that a simple cyst which has unfortunately got large enough to need to be removed. But I’ve been there and I know it can be worrying. I didn’t know what my cyst was until it was removed.

The keyhole surgery is pretty straightforward in my experience and the pain is not horrendous and only lasts a few days really. The open surgery no doubt will be like having a c section and will take more recovery time but people have c sections everyday and go back for second and third ones so it must be bearable.

Good luck, hope all goes well and you recover speedily. And try not to stress out.

      Hi Charlotte,

Oh right wasn't sure what it was.

      I'm only 23 years old.

Like I said that's what it showed from ultra sound the things I lisited in my other reply. It's just so worrying as I know it's there and I just want it out asap.

I'm guessing I'll find more out on the 30th when i see specialist. I'm hoping my GP has my ct scan results when I see my GP next week so he can tell me.

Much rather key hole but I totally understand that it might be too big for that. I haven't had children so not had c-section.

I just have read way to much online about cysts ect which has caused more worry to myself.

I keep thinking I'm getting better as pain levels isn't too bad but then pain comes back and I just think the worst outcome.

The reason I found out and I was in so much pain is because something twisted and untwisted.

Just want this op over with and the cyst out as it's causing so much worry and stress.  I already suffer from mental health illnesses sadly so its adding pressure onto everything.

      Hi Holly,

At 23 just remember the chances of ovarian cancer are miniscual, it really is more something that affects women after menopause so really try not to worry about that side of it.

Good luck with the op, I had my op fairly quickly after initial diagnosis, like a month or something so not too long.

Also remember many of us have cysts that we don’t even know about, they show up on routine scans for something else or sometimes if they twist or burst.  My scan was given for something unrelated and that’s when they found this 10cm cyst but I didn’t even know I had it, just had it removed because of risk of torsion.

      Hey!

That's true about cancer it's just so worrying!

Thank you. Like i said for appointment on 30th which was be 3 and half weeks from being told I had cyst so hoping op won't be long after that.

I only found out about my cyst because my ovary or cyst twisted and ended up in a&e.
