Ouch! Pain, pain going away, don't come back another day :(

I went to see a Rheumotologist today, he was kind, gentle, but his advice was ridiculous to say the least. He said I need to do aerobics every day starting at 15 minutes a day. I don't know about any of you on this site but for me that would send me to the emergency room for sure! I don't get it. If I could do aerobics don't  think I wouldn't but 7 days a week? Get real, I'm not going to be able to keep that up not to mention the pain I will be in. I went to see him to ask about Tai Chia and I get this advice? Does anyone have a similar experience? Has Aerobic exercise worked for you?

I think Tai Chia is good as is water aerobics. I walk every day. You have to get mind over matter and do something  other wise it will completely ruin your life.

Good luck have a go at different things, slowly at first.

Hi Sheryl, aerobic exercise 15minutes a day is ideal for people who are fit but we are not fit! Some days it is a struggle to walk never mind at a pace to increase the heart rate and breathing. It is best to do gentle exercise and stretching, gradually building up the length of time you are able to exercise, that is walking, swimming, stationary bike, etc. at first it may be for only 2 minutes. If we overdo things it usually means more time recovering, so we must listen to our bodies and learn what we can and can't do. My GP recommended tai chi, mindfulness and pacing myself with an aim to start running again with my dogs which I haven't done. I have started walking further though but had to build up really slowly. I am now able to walk 2 miles but it has taken me over a year to build up but sometimes my toes are so painful I just can't do it. I Have a gym at home but I am unable to use the cross trainer for 15 minutes. Sometimes I struggle to do 3 minutes. People who have not experienced fibro themselves simply have no idea what our muscles feel like and how difficult it is to move them, especially the legs. Just do what you can each day and gradually build up. If it sets you back, just rest and don't di as much the next time.

Thank you for telling me about your own exercise routine. It's very reassuring to me. I don't know why I can't convey this to my doctor as you just did for me. It's exactly how I feel but when I try to explain all this to my doctor I get flustered because he looks at me like I'm speaking Martian, I sometimes think its all in my head but the pain is real because it's always there, even in my sleep

Hi Sheryl, I too have constant background ache particularly in my arms; at times it is a deep deep aching stab that is really painful. My calves throb and I am really slow walking up an incline as my lower legs and thighs ache so much. Sometimes my muscles do ease as I continue to walk but it's making that first effort particularly when I'm soooo tired after work. I went through a very traumatic time with the fibro in December and as a result I have opted to downgrade in my job and to work 2 days now to reduce the tiredness. Just do what you can, pace yourself, don't overdo things and evaluate what you have. There is good advice on this forum, all replies are genuine at heart . Look after yourself first, the house will always there and what doesn't get done today can wait. You come first. Take care Caroline.

Hi Christine I agree with everything you have said to sheryl...if you can find a low impact water aerobics you only do what your body is able to...not high impact I tried this and found this too fast...i found the low impact was really good for me it helps strengthen the muscles and loosens the stiff joints over time and helps alleviate pain with fibro by doing gentle exercises as you do it to music which makes it more enjoyable... I was a volunteer care co ordinater for the Alzheimer's society 5 years ago and I took carers young and elderly to swimming and Water aerobics one elderly lady 70 yrs old had a very bad leg and arthritus she told me she looked forward to going as she would arrive achy and in pain and stressed but after an hour in the pool she felt less pain more relaxed and  very calm it made me feel better and helped me with my health problems just knowing I had contributed to making a difference to someone else's well being gave me a lift and knowing it could made a difference in her caring for her husband..I continue to do water aerobics twice a week for 2 hours .I received very good feedback from everyone that went along...if you can't swim just being in the warm water moving your arms and legs feels nice I urge everyone to try it at least once...also if hydrotherapy is available in your area or a jacuzzi you could try this first...the gentle bubbles on your back hips or any sore areas is good for you...

Hiya Shirl...Yes there's nothing quite like warm water for whatever ails you, I have a sauna at home, with infrared..and ionic lights...it's just awesome it gets right inside your body...followed by a  warm shower..mm..nothing like it...it tires me right out so I usually have it all before bed...helping someone like you do is just such great medicine...must be a really lovely feeling inside when you see that you have made such a difference to someone else who is suffering too...well done you...certainly will help your well being..have a lovely day...God  bless you Shirl...:-) xxxx

    Hi Sheryl

Any form of exercise can be difficult for us but doing very light and low impact exercises are best for us. Swimming is supposed to be good as well as gentle walks and gentle stretches. Mindful therapy is good too CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) with this it doesn't take the pain away but we can control our mind to feel better and positive.

Take one day at time and cherish each wonderful moment.

    Gentle hugs wink x

I was advised to do pilates, and even tho some times I would rather stay at home I go to the classes.  My energy levels have gone up, and strength wise I feel much better, sometimes my back really hurts when I go but after it feels much better. The key is not to push yourself to hard.

before i knew what was wrong with me

i was sick of not being able to loose weight and being so tired all the time

i started doing low impact areobics 40 mins a day every other day

i nearly killed my self ,after 3 weeks the pain was awful mybreathing was very laboured and caught site of myself in the mirror and there was a tinge of blue around my lips this meant i wasnt getting enough oxygen around my blood .

i walked like i had wooden poles in my legs and hurt all over like id been rugby tackled , i had to give it up i would have killed myself .

dont listen to that idiot his totaly wrong you need gentle excersie walking and building it up to a brisk walk for 15 mins a day is the best ,.and maybe aiming to do 30 mins eventuly . good luck hun .

      Hi tiswas

with water aerobics it sounds like you were trying to do too much too soon the one I went to everyone female and male had health problems we were told to start off slow it didn't matter if we couldn't keep in line with others...if I was having a bad day with pain i would stay at the back of everyone and hold onto the side of the pool and just slightly move my arms  or legs in rotation as did others...I went along because I enjoyed the social side and also I started to feel the benefits from feeling energised and less pain and stiffness each time I went I tried to do a few more excercises than before and by the fourth week I felt I could join in and by the sixth week I was amazed how much more movement I had and as long as I didn't push or twist my body too much  I felt ok in the water.. The key is start off with baby steps and see what you are able to manage. Take care

but it still crippled me .

if we get our move this yr to scarborough i will look into over 50s swimming and water areobics but here in filey theres nothing much to help.no swimming pool or classes liek that .so will have to wait .

Sorry to hear that you don't have access to a swimming pool...I have always tried to do things to keep as active as possible in mind and body.. I have been around so many people with mental and physical health problems including my family..there is a history of arthritus and cancer in my family and I have Tried to stay positive by wanting to do as much as I possibly can to improve my health by ways of looking at alternatives for my diet and pain management..good luck with your move

ps I have a close friend who suffered a mental break down 10 years ago and she calls me shirl girl and it feels good because it states how I now feel I am fortunate to have my own personal support network around me from family and friends.

Hiya Shirl and tiswas, I don't do water aerobics I just got taught ages ago what excercise ( very gentle and easy) was good for me at the hospital tank..then I just do my own..in my own time..some days I can only just sit in the warm pool and let the water splash around me..at least that way it's really good for circulation.  Have a lovely day ladies..be blessed..:-) xxx
