If yes please let me know how the surgery went. My surgeon is treating my case as urgent and tomorrow I go for a MRI scan with surgery to follow asap.

Hi ladies. I am a 41 years old  who also has a nice big cyst on her left ovary, although admittedly not as big as some of yours.  This has been great to read as my operation is booked for the 13th May.  I have just 1 question that I hope you can help with and give me your opinions on please. Ovaries.  To keep or not to keep?  The surgeon tells me that my bloods are fine and do not indicate anything sinister so the question is do I keep my right ovary?  The left one will be going that's for sure but I'm very uncertain as to what to do with the other one.  For those ladies who have had a surgery induced menopause does anyone know if it's meant to be worse or take longer because it's not natural?  I had a hysterectomy 4 years ago hence why it's not a problem for me.  I'm glad your surgeries have all gone well and your recoveries are good and hope mine is the same. Hi Tracy I had both my ovaries removed due to a 20cm cyst and as a precaution due to a family history of ovarian cancer, 2 months ago.  I went into a surgical menopause within 2 weeks of the operation.  I am suffering from hot flushes, night sweats and depression/anxiety since it started.  On medication anti-depressants and Clonidine for the sweating, starting to improve and not as severe now, but it is still affecting my daily life.  I would say consider carefully your options, a surgical menopause at 48 is not fun and I am told by my GP this may continue for many years sad  On a positive note I dont need to worry about ovarian cancer and another ovarian cyst now.  Good luck with your decison and operation, I hope all goes well hugs XXXX

Hi Tracy...  I had surgery on March 27th as a cyst was found on my R ovary.  Since I had also had a history of fibroids, I said to the GYN/ONC who would be performing the surgery, to go ahead and remove my uterus as well.  I did ask for my left ovary to remain intact as I was very concerned about early menopause and hormone production.  However, my biggest fear was the worry of the R ovarian cyst being possibly cancerous.  Long story short, per the surgeon post-surgery, my left ovary had begun growing cysts as well so it had to be removed.  He stated that if it had not been removed, I would've been back in shortly for surgery as the cysts would have continued to grow.  Also aAccording to the surgeon, there was also so much endometriosis, it had begun to attach to my bowel wall.  So, they took everything - both ovaries, uterus, and cervix.

So far, and I don't know if it will last although I pray it does, I have not experienced a single symptom of surgical menopause (yet).  It can hit some women immediately, it can manifest weeks or months later, and some women never experience any symptoms.  It's just hard to know which one of those women we are.  I do sleep with the fan blowing directly on me because I sweat at night, but I've been doing this for years, and I think it has more to do with the fact that I need heavier blankets to sleep; lightweight blankets or just a sheet is noxious to me.  But so far, not one hot flash, no mood swings; actually, I feel more even than before the surgery!  I think I'm still so overwhelmingly grateful no cancer was found, I'm just appreciating life.  It's such an independent decision, it's hard to know what to do.  My advice would be, if there are no issues with your remaining ovary, for hormone production, ask to leave it if possible.  If there are even small cysts on your right ovary, really consider what that could mean for the future. And lastly, as was true in my case, depending on what the find during the surgery, it may not even be an option.  I feel great so far; my biggest worry now is returning back to work on May12th!  LOL  I've really been enjoying being home and spending time with friends and family...  Good luck...

Jenny, I'm so sorry to hear about your experience post-surgery.  As I said to Tracy, I don't know if I'm on delay right now and my estrogen reserves haven't depleted yet, or if I'm going to be one of the lucky ones who remain asymptomatic.  So far though, I've been okay.  You would think by this many decades later, there would be some effective drug on the market that helps eliminate, or at least alleviate menopausal symptoms; it isn't like this is a new development for us women.  Still, I truly hope that you find relief from your symptoms.  At 48, we're still young women with a long, hopefully JOYOUS way to go.  confused

Hi Latrenda so glad to hear your doing well smile I am returning to work on the 17th May, delayed due to all my symptoms.  It will be good to get back to some normality in my life.  I was told by my GP I was already starting the menopause before my op, so I suppose my hormones were already depleted and losing my ovaries just speeded up things.  i am starting to get better though, thanks to my medication.  Tiredness seems to follow me everywhere and prevents me being as active as I would like, but Im sure that will improve soon too.  Hopefully the future will be bright for both of us XXX

Hi Jenny and Latrenda.  Thank you both very much for your replies.  It is good to hear both sides and ends of the spectrum.  As far as I know, I'm not menopausal at the moment but am rather concerned about the symptoms that Jenny has experienced.  You hear so much negative about it all, but as you so rightly say, who knows?  Everyone is different.  I've handled a fair amount of illness fairly well so far so am hoping that this goes in my favour and am usually quite good at recovering post op.  This said, I'm having my hernia repaired with the cyst removed so have 2 lots to recover!!  It's great to hear that so soon after your operations you are both recovering well and going back to work.  I have a 5 year old (as well as work and husband) to think about and his daily routine so I am lucky in a way that my time pre-op is filled with lots so I don't have time to think to much!  Thanks again and best wishes for speedy, healthy futures xxx

    Hi everyone!

I have been following these forums for a while, 10 months to be exact, as I have a 10.5 cm simple cyst on my right ovary and a 9.5.complex cyst on my left ovary. These cysts were found in July 2013 via trans u/s after I started experiencing pain and heaviness on my right side. I was first told I had a uti, but when the antibiotics didn't help, I went back to the e.r and that is when they did the ultrasound. The ultrasound only found the right simple cyst at first and I wasn't too concerned being that I have PCOS (which usually only causes small cysts)- I just assumed that my poor diet since having my daughter in 2010 cause one of those cysts to get out of control. Anyway, I went to my regular gyn and he felt it was no big deal. I am only 34 (33 at that time), but he decided to order a CA-125, an he4 and a ROMA (risk of ovarian malignancy bloodtest). I also had a pap. Well, my pap was abnormal for the first time ever, so I immediately booked an appointment at Moffitt Cancer Center with a gyn onc (I am in the states) for the cervical issue. While at that appointment in Sept 2013, I mentioned my ovarian cyst, my dr reviewed the ultrasound that was sent over from the e.r and she eas not worried about it at all. We then set an appointment for me to have my cervical pre.cancer removed. On the morning of that prpcedure, she had me do another ultrasound and after my cervix was taken care of she gave me the results of the u/s and it showed an 8.5cm complex cyst on my left ovary and the radiologist stated that it looked like a dermoid. At that point, she told me I needed to remove it as dermoids do not go away on their own. During this time, my blood work came back and it was all normal. So, in Sept we scheduled surgery for December.

I have never had surgery before and the idea of it scares me to death. I am terrified of anesthesia and I have gained so much weight since having my daughter, it makes me worry even more about my body being able to tolerate the surgery. Before my surgery was to take.place, my dr wanted me to have another CA-125 in November. I did and those test results were also normal. Between finding out I had these cysts and November my symptoms were: bloating that comes and goes but is always worse before and during my period, excessively hungry, heaviness in pelvis, on and off sharp pains in my pelvis, some back pain, gassiness, and some cramp like pain in the area above my belly button. No matter how many times my dr told me she did not think I had cancer, it didn't reassure me and I am a single mom to a 3 year olx.nd have very little family. I was terrified of not watching her grow up, etc. I could not handle the thought of being put to sleep and either not waking up, or waking up to be told I have cancer. So, here is where I get ridiculous. I cancelled the surgery that was scheduled for December. In all, I cancelled it 4 times all the way into February with the last time involving me literally running out of the hospital with nurses chasing me. I know, the most ridiculous thing you have ever heard, right? In between my cancellations, I did have another u/s in late January that showed nomsognificant change. The cyst on the right still appeared simple and the same size and the one on the left was now 9.5 cm. The radiology report stated there was no blood flow to the left cyst, that it was complex solid and fluid no papillae or nodules and that his impression was still either a dermoid or hemorrhagic cyst. Nothing about malignancy was on the report and I had no ascites.

I ended up changing doctors in March because the one I was seeing messed up a few things with my cervix and also wanted to do a vertical laparotomy insgead of the key hole she originally wanted to do. Anyway, I have a new dr and he is great! He was not too concerned about the cysts and feels they are not cancer. He is going to remove them via robotic assisted laparoscopy, which is nice... Of course, he cannot say for sure that the left cyst is not cancer, but he truly beli3ves it is not based on what he saw on my ultrasounds and the blood work, etc. He said he thinks worst case will be a borderline tumor. So, I have to put on my big girl pants and have this done and I am absolutely beside myself. I have 100% convinced myself this is cancer and I have been torturing myself over this for 10 months. In the last few weeks I started having routine diarrhea and now sharp pains up into my left rib cage and it is making my worry and anxiety worse. I have read every single forum, article, website that talks about ovarian cysts, in fact worrying about this cyst has taken over my lofe and I am worried to the point that I cannot do much else but worry. To be put to sleep knowing that you could wake up and have someone issue a time limit on your life is excruciating...... reading all of your positive stories has helped a lot. I search for stories that are like mine and end well; it gives me a little bit of hope.....

Hi I'm 52 and I've have a solid mass 22x25x13 cm.on my ovary.....it's big....I'm so scared.....my gyn is sending me to cancer/gyn specialist.....to schedule surgery....I think she thinks is cancer....what if it is?.....nobody said anything.......if it is....could I survive?.....I'm expecting my first grandchild in October.....will I be here....I'm petrified....I look more pregnant than my daughter in law...

Dear Staroxo, do try not to panic.  I have a mass on my ovary about the same size and from what I read and have seen on the internet, the larger the mass, the less likely it is to be cancerous.  I see the gynae in two day's time and I expect surgery very shortly thereafter.  If you read this website, you'll be so comforted by the experience of others

      Keep on keeping on

Star try not to worry too much as that makes things worse! (I know from experience!) I have got a similar sized cyst and am waiting for surgery but as Jennifer said, they are a bit less likely to be cancerous if they are that size. Also, think about it, if it was that big - you would be very very poorly by now!

Have they done any blood tests or anything yet? I think the first step (after ultrasound) will be CA-125 tests, they are just simple blood tests to look at the protien levels in your blood. Normal levels are <35, mine have been 52 and 59. they don't suspect any cancer though. when you get to the hundreds is when they start suspecting things!

have you had anything more than an ultrasound yet?

      xx

Ultrasound and cts......my dr said they don't really have blood test for ovarian cancer......but my regular blood test came back normal.......maybe I'll know more when I see my specialist......is anyone seeing a cancer/ gyn spealist?

I am seeing a gynae oncologist yes, they treat everyone in the same way I think as they have to go for the worst outcome first.

Thats weird that they said that, I would look online about a CA-125 test, that is probably what your other bloods are. Ask the Dr whether it was that test and if it was and it was normal, you really probably have nothing to worry about at all. Only when it is in the 100s. Although, I am no doctor, its just what I have been told by my GP and surgeon! smile

If it is not that and it was just a regular test, I would ask for a CA-125. Its the cancer antigen 125 test which measures for cancers in the ovaries and female reprodutive system. It also detects things like cysts and endometrosis. Its worth asking! xx

I will look into that blood test....I can't believe I have to wait 8 days just to have the consultation visit with my dr....I heard he was worth waiting for though....who knows how long before I have the surgery.....thank you.....I appreciate any info anyone has.....
