An ultrasound scan has detected a big 23cm ( 9.5 inch ) ovarian cyst. I am 62 years old have no pain but a very large swollen stomach, Has anyone had such a large cyst or had a cyst at my age? If yes please let me know how the surgery went. My surgeon is treating my case as urgent and tomorrow I go for a MRI scan with surgery to follow asap.

I just had a laparoscopy to remove right ovary and a 7-cm cyst. The procedure is non-intrusive. I was able to walk up 3 flights of stairs 2 hours after the surgery. pain was strongest the day after surgery because of the gas they use to inflate your stomach during surgery so they can see/reach the organs better. Besides that pain, it seems to be a smooth surgery and with a little patience it will pass...

wish you best of luck. The incision in your case might be large (or maybe not as they do suck the content of the cyst so maybe the size does not make a big difference??) but I don't think you should be worried. from my experience , it is similar to removing wisdome teeth

My belly shrunk down after 2 months; initially it was swollen still due to surgery. I had walked around a lot after surgery. Then 3 months out after I've returned to work and got on with my normal routine, i incorporated core exercises like crunches/ sit ups to tighten my belly, cardio on alternate days. i am not a big woman but i lost 15lb after my growth was removed then another 10 lb a yr out. It takes commitment to do the exercises for a flat belly.

I'll be 55 on Friday, post-menopausal and was diagnosed two weeks ago with an 18cm ovarian cyst. Surgery is schedule for 12/17, but on cancellation list. I didn't have any major symptoms, just blamed my growing belly and lethargy on not working out enough, food & wine and aging. My belly has been growing for the last six months or so, and diet and exercise did nothing. I was feeling defeated, miserable, unmotivated, and I even wondered if it might be depressions. I can't do many of the things I've always enjoyed - cycling/spinning, yoga or swimming (putting on a swimsuit is just too awful) - because of discomfort courtesy of this distended belly, and I am CONSTANTLY exhausted. I can get a solid eight hours sleep and still feel like crawling back into bed (which is where I am now at 11:30am instead of at my office working on my business). This thread has been super helpful, many questions answered - like will my belly ever again be anywhere close to what it was before this (sounds like there's hope for that with a bit of work) and that there's hope of losing most of the 15-20 pounds I've put on since this monster started growing - but I'm wondering about the lethargy? Has anyone else experienced exhaustion? And did your energy return after you recovered from surgery?

hi my wife had a 18cm ovarian cyst from colon cancer but it was just in the ovary they called it krukenberg the cyst was big but the stomach gets big in most cases because of the fluid.she had it taken out in February of this year she had to do 5 treatments of chemo but she has been getting scans every 3 months and it's been all clear.

Its only been 2 weeks. since your surgery. There are limitations to how much you can do right now. I recall i was in pain if i were to sneeze, cough or laugh. My growth was the size of a bowling ball, 10 in vertical incision. Lost 15 lb after all that was removed, my belly became flat but swollen and red. Took at least 6 month for the growth so now will take 6 month to work on your belly.

      Noel -

It will be two weeks tomorrow since my surgery and I am happy to report that the preliminary biopsy (that was done while I was under) came back negative (no cancer) and the surgeon was able to remove the cyst (as well as both fallopian tubes and ovaries) laparoscopically (opposed to having to do an 10"-12" incision down the middle of my belly) so there was moderate to mild post-op pain. And I immediately felt SO much better without that cyst in there!

I took the oxy for the first day and the second & third night - otherwise I was pretty comfortable alternating ibuprofen & acetaminophen. Sneezing, coughing and laughing was a little tough the first week, but now it's fine.

The pre-op days are very scary, but my Gyn Oncologist assured me that just because the cyst had grown very large very quickly it didn't mean it was cancerous. (Mine wasn't there back in January when I had my annual physical.) When they reviewed my CT scan, neither the radiologist or the gyn oncologist saw the indicators they usually see with cancerous cysts. They also ran hep4 and ca 125 bloodwork and both came back clear.

It's a scary time, but try to distract yourself and do what you can to stay positive. Will keep you in my prayers and keep us posted on how you are doing.

      Lollie

      hi lollie

thats great and exactly the news you want to hear. i went for my CT scan today. i reckon wont get results until the 9th when i see the consultant. until then will need to keep busy. its just the not knowing. And the waiting. Defenitely doesnt help that it is over the holidays. But no news is good news. Its good to hear you doing so well. A very happy new year when it cones.

I had an emergency partial hysterectomy after a 23cm cyst was discovered on my right ovary. currently still recovering. i had another cyst on my left side, but it was negative. the 23cm cyst was a stage 1 form of cancer. no treatment other than surgery.
