Ovarian Cysts - At What Rate Do They Develop?

Hello.

I am new here so will try and keep this as short as possible.

Around 2 months ago I, unfortunately suffured a misscarriage which required surgery. I was advised that despite being 10 weeks 'pregnant' there was no 'fetal pole' just a yolk sack. I was told to wait until 12 weeks to see if the 'pregnancy' passed naturally (which it did not) and I had to have what was effectiveley a termination.

During all the above, I was given many ultrasound scans, and I was  advised by the examiner that I have a 5cm cyst on my right ovary. She told me that this is very common, and not to worry.

However... Over the last 2 weeks my stomach has become so bloated that I have had a friend say to me that she was not aware that I was 'expecting'... A neighbour also asked when I was due... It's not suprising as I look around 7 months pregnant.

I am a keep gym goer, and very into health and fitness. I have altered my diet but gained a stone. I have also been urinating around 3 times an hour(!) despite feeling permanantly dehydrated.

Over the last few days I have been experiencing excruiciating pain in my right lower abdomen, mainly when excersising.

To add to this I have also been put under investigation at a cardiology unit, for persistant dizziness and palpitations.

I cannot quite belive that a cyst could have developed from 5cm to a considerable size in just 9 weeks, but would really appreciate any input, information or experience that anyone may have.

Thank you in advance, Regards.

    Hi,

I will tell you my stroy and maybe it might answer a few things, but feel free to ask any questions.

In june 2013 i was rushed into hospital for pains inside my tummy and horrible bleeding periods. I was so swollen and uncomfortable. I felt dizzy sicky just horrible. I had to have an emergency operation as i had a 9.5 cm dermoid cyst. It damaged my right ovary and tubes and i had to have my ovary removed. I was total devasted and heart broken. I have never had kids as i was worried for my future.

I recovered with a large amount of pain and unfortunately still get it, to which am under going investigation finally for damage that could of been because of the surgery. (during the surgery you feet are raised on stirups and they can move you about which can cause some problems. so they may have damaged something in my hip area right)

Anyway i started to feel unwell again worrying about a cyst in same area, which is hard cause i have no ovary or tubes on that side. I was getting increasing cramps and my periods havent been the same since i had the operation in June 2013. Black and clots and hardly last a day or two. Started to get horrible wall paper paste discharge and it was just horrible. Doctors would take me serious said it was hormones adjusting.... yeah right!!!!

I was finding it hard to stand at work for long periods of time and started feeling dizzy and my tummy just increasing. Putting on weight... about a stone!!! and then in June 2014 i was driving to work and i had to call ambulance i was in so much pain. I was kept in hospital and had a scan and they said nothing is there. they acutally turned around and said i am constipated.

I was not!!!!!! i was always constipated before my cyst in june 2013 and soon as i had operation i havent been like i was.

They decided to give me injection to mimic the menopause to help my cramps and it did but i had a massive reaction from the injections so they stopped it.

They then did an oepration to look back inside me and said there was nothing there. Sept 2014.

The pain was getting really bad in my hip and i struggled... but i was also getting pain on my left... (this is my only ovary)... so i had big arguement with my doctor to be refered to a different hospital in and see a different consultant (2 hours drive away).... he arrange for a MRI Scan where i had dye in my veins... he said the pain in my hip was due to damage from operation which i am seeing a specialist for within the month. However he said that i had a 4.7cm cyst on my left ovary and it is solid which suggested cancer...... but he said its highly unlikely because they looked inside me in september... 3months ago.

He says its normal to get blood filled cyst that can burst or it could be another dermoid cyst. these just keep growing and growing usually.

He arranged to have a scan on 27th Jan 2015, and says if it has gone then great, if not he will arrange to look inside and remove cyst. He is very good and i total trust him as he is a excellent consultant which is why i fought to be seen by him and thats why i drive over 2 hours away to be seen by him. He also thinks i might have adeymetrios (cant spell it) inside my uterus. Which is very simular to endometriosis.

Anyway, on two days before xmas i was in so much pain and i rang and he arrange to have an emergency scan. The cyst was smaller but was leaking fluid in my ovary, which worried me but he says this is what can cause you pain, swelling, dizzy spells, sickness... you tummy can look massive as if you are pregnant.

Some people experience this, some people have cyst that come and go and dont have any symptoms.

I am still having a scan on 27th to see if it is still there and what my ovary is like.

one thing i can say i experience these symptoms throughout the month especially when i would be ovulating... it can be horrible... i get the extreme of the symptoms. Its horrible headaches, sickness, bloated... constantly more than normal that never goes away. I have in total but on nearly stone and half or even 2 stone since operation in june 2013..... its horrible. I also get palpitations and anxiety... i had it really bad when my cyst was massive. and as soon as the cyst went i didnt have as much axiety... it is all to do with the hormones..its horrible.

Some cyst can get really really big before bursting.... and it is normal but to me it still worries me cause i havent had kids and would like them. i am 33 in june 2015. I was really bad the month of my MRI scan, and obviously when i got my results i found out i had a cyst,. but i never knew that i had a cyst, and i was worried about my mri... i just would get very worked up, emotions and anxious about things and it was all very horrible....

please ask me any questions and am sorry for writting so much i just hope it has answered some of your thoughts. ..... please update me or send me a private message if you want with how your doing. xx

Hi Pingu - have you seen a gynaecologist ? They usually do something if the cyst is 5cm or more. I have 1 cyst on each overy 5cm and 8cm . Only found out Dec 10th 2014-no symptoms then or now,but have to have laparoscopy and possible hysterectomy on Jan 27th.Even tho I am 74 yrs old, like you I walk 3x5K walks a week, gym twice and swim 50lengths twice a week. I was really down over Xmas and New year but still going out to parties etc pretending all was well. Quite relieved to be given a date to get this nightmare over. The surgeon could not tell me how long I've had these cysts- they may have been there years and caused no bother. He said the hysterectomy may all be for nothing but it's the best way to find out whether I have cancer or not! Take care and get further help- you shouldn't have to suffer like this xx

Hi Pingu - I have 2 cysts  One 5cm and one 8cm but the surgeon who is going to do a hysterectomy- I'm 74 so don't need my 'bits' could not tell me if they have been there a long time or were recent. Also some grow slowly, others fast and some disappear! Even tho I'm older i have never felt so well , have a good healthy diet still swim and gym every week and am not on any medication, sailed thro pregnancies and menopause so this hit me like a ton of bricks just before Xmas.

You are certainly going thro it and I feel for you, especially the miscarriage, bless you. Also the pain you are suffering. Keep checking this site as you can talk freely here and we all understand what you are going thro'. Do you have another appointment set up for your cyst or are they monitoring it ?Take care xx

I must you ladies questions brave, I have a cyst on both ovaries and it seems as if I can get no one to listen, with the exception of my family doctor. He has referred me to 2 consultants,. Both want to watch and wait. I am in so much pain. I am 44 and haven't gone through menopause yet. While I would love to have more children, it is something that just isn't going to happen. My husband passed away about seven years ago. How do you get the specialists to listen to the fact that you are miserable and feel like you are literally dying inside.?
