Ovarian Dermoid Cyst - Very Painful!!

Posted , 124 users are following.

I started having pain in my lower left side in October of last year, it wasnt too bad so I didnt go to the doctors until january as I thought it may go away. I suspected I may have a Cyst and told the doctor and he refered me for a scan. I had a scan in mid Feb and I was diagnosed with a Dermoid Ovarian Cyst, it was about 3.5cm. I had another scan the other day and it has grown to 5cm. I have been refered to a gynocologist and been told that its going to take 20 weeks. I went back to the doctors because its causing me a lot of pain, but he said just to take pain killers (which doesnt really help) Iv been getting really really tired lately and doctor thinks that it could be related to the cyst.

The pain is getting me down, today I was in agony, I had a really sharp pain and I couldnt move, I was in tears. Im not going to be seen for another 4 months at least and I dont know what to do! Im worried its going to grow bigger.

Has anyone else been through similar experiences? How can I relieve the pain, Iv tired pain killers and warm baths but nothing works. Im only little and worried about how big the cyst is going to get, how quickly do these things grow? Mine got 1.5cm bigger in 5 weeks, so Im hoping it might stop for a bit!

Thank you

It is nearly 4 weeks since I had keyhole surgery to remove 2 ovaries, fallopian tubes and dermoid cyst. I have to say all the advice on this forum has been spot on, so for those of you waiting surgery, do not be scared like I was! I feel so much better, I had like a lot of you ladies many symptoms which my doctor dismissed, e;g bloating, side pain, back pain, bladder irritation, ibs symptoms, fatigue etc etc! I have to say all symptoms have gone apart from tiredness but of course that is from recuperating. If I overdo things my side where cyst was aches, but we have to remember that healing is deep and until bruising is gone and a few months have passed we have to take it relatively easy.

I didnt see doctor before leaving hospital and 2 weeks after surgery for my follow up I saw a completely different consultant which annoyed and upset me as I didnt find out the nitty gritty of my surgery. On one hand I was very pleased to get a good result, and be ticked off but I dont think consultants look at us as humans with feelings!

I would advise anyone that is embarking on surgery to make a list of questions you want to ask your consultant, dont fear surgery, it is amazing you fall asleep and wake up all done. Have extra painkillers at home with lots of peppermint tea for wind, I drank about 8 mugs a day and didnt have the pain alot of post surgery patients do. Eat lots of veg and fruit, prunes and no sugar for first week to keep constipation at bay!! ,I slept on the sofa with cushions piled around me for a few days as felt lying in bed a bit uncomfortable. sleep lots but walk about house as much as possible to exercise and after about a week I was taking walks outside until i felt tired.

I wish you pre surgery ladies lots of luck and hope things go well, it seems a majority of us feel much better after losing the cysts!!

Thank you ladies so much for the info on post-surgery details! I really appreciate it. I guess I am a little over a month since surgery and my right ovary area still feels a bit sore sometimes and I still have swelling but I am going to assume this is all normal at this point.

    Thanks so much!!

And yes I agree- when it comes to surgery you just go to sleep and then wake up and it's done!!

Evening ladies! I can't believe how much better I feel since my surgery on September 23rd. I had both ovaries and fallopian tubes and a fast-growing dermoid cyst removed. My recovery has been pretty uneventful, although it took longer than I anticipated before I felt fully fit but apart from some lower back pain all my other pre-op symptoms have disappeared as if by magic; persistent IBS symptoms (I lost a stone in weight), recurrent water infections, fatigue and all sorts of weird and wonderful aches and pains. I am back at work full time and have more energy now than I have had in a long time. So, my message to all you ladies awaiting surgery is hang in there, the discomfort following the surgery is only short-lived and there is most definitely light at the end of the tunnel Take care everyone xx

    Hello ladies,

I have a pain in my left side, mostly at nights, it wakes me up, and I have to take painkillers.

This goes on since 8 months now.

I went to GP, he sent me for an US, which shows a 5 cm fibroid on the outside wall of the uterus, and also a 4.5 cm cyst on the left ovarie. The ovarie has a thick wall, and multiple internal septae, probably blood inside. They are atteched together.

He referred me to gynae, but I am scared to go!!

What should I do? Is it possible will both go away?

I have still pain at night, and bad constipation.

I am 32 with no children.

Dear Ella I would strongly advise you to go and get it sorted out, you cann't ignore it and hope it goes away. I understand you are scared, believe me if you read back to my old posts and others most of us were very scared. There is so much they can do to help and make you feel better, also knowing you are so young I am sure they will go out of there way to save your ovary. However even if they cannt you only need 1 ovary! Remember once you have all the information you can make an informed choice. Trust me the thought of surgery is far worse than the actual event. Good luck and if you need any more info just ask, I am sure one of us has experienced most scenarios so will be able to answer any questions you have.

    Regards

    Bernie

Please go to your gynae appointment Ella. As Bernie says, even if they had to remove the ovary, you only need one. Cysts can grow quite quickly and can become more problematic so it's definitely in your best interests to get it removed, or at least get an opinion from the gynaecologist.

I had to take very strong painkillers to cope with the pain caused by my cyst & it was such a relief to have the surgery and not need to take tablets any longer. The surgery these days is pretty straightforward & often done using keyhole surgery - I was in and out as a day case patient.

Thank you very much Karen & Bernie !

I don't have an appointment yet, just has a referral from gp.

I know it is silly, but I think that is not too serious, and what the gynaecologist will think, why I 'm coming with a small cyst and fibroids. I was reading , somebody has 10-20 cm cyst!

    I am scared sad

    Welcome to the new 'cysters'!!!

Ella I would definitely go and get checked out properly. You cannot continue experiencing pain & taking the painkillers...unfortunately these things do not go away without a little medical intervention.

I had a laparotomy 3 weeks ago to remove a 16cm demoid cyst that I knew nothing about except for heavy periods! My gynae was able to save both my ovaries and as Bernie says you only need 1 to conceive.

Yes, waiting for surgery is a worrying time but the relief you feel afterwards is great! There are downsides to surgery but if you follow the advice given on this forum you won't go wrong......what you find on here are true experiences....the doctors haven't gone through what we have and whilst they can suggest things, these ladies can TELL you if they work or not biggrin

    Good luck x

    Hi Ella

My cyst was only 4cm!! amazing what symptoms the little blighter caused size in this case really doesn't mattersmile

    Hi Ella,

My cyst was also only 3cm when it was found in July this year, by the time it was removed in September it had grown to the size of a large lemon! My consultant told me that if it hadn't been removed it could have burst or twisted causing all sorts of problems. You really do need to get rid of yours if and when you are given the option and protect yourself from further complications. We can all promise that you will feel tremendous relief afterwards and your health will definitely improve. Take care xxx

Hi all, -brief history of my problems! : I had a dermoid cyst removed a year and a half ago that had reached 16 X 9, I am very petite, - 24"waist with a flat stomach, so, pretty horrified when this taut 'pregnancy' bump

suddenly appeared. (Although had experienced severe pain on occasion, this was always on first day of a period if it occurred, lasting about an hr). Waited 3 weeks for the op.. in the 3rd week, woke up and felt

intense pain, rushed to hospital, - the cyst had ruptured. Knowing that I was due for the op the following

Tues, (in 3 days time). and getting the pain under control, the hospital let me go (I was in a different town

at the time), but, on arrival at my hospital on the Tues, my surgeon examined me and quickly told me of the rupture, and swung me in first thing. By all accounts the op was a success, both ovaries remain intact, and I've been functioning and fit, - because of the rupture, they were able to do a laparoscopy, instead of more intrusive surgery, and now I can only barely see one scar above pubis, about a little finger-nail wide.

Recently, I have had increasing pain on first day of my period, a week or so ago I was doubled up on the

bathroom floor, it subsided but a dull ache and that IBS feeling of bloatedness has continued. Been to

docs, and now on the list for another scan, and been prescribed strong pain

relief. I am incredibly depressed because I am desperate to have a baby, I'm 37, and have been trying for months with no success. Am obviously convinced my problems are what's stopping us.

Is this another cyst? My stomach is still flat. Why didn't they detect something else? Is it likely that the

    rupture caused severe issues?!

Apologies. Sending out somewhat silly questions, just to see if anyone else has experienced these

symptoms coming back.. and whether anyone here has had a successful pregnancy after all this rubbish?

Unused to writing on forums, not sure why it spaced my post like that. Annoying! Sorry, makes it hard to read.

    Welcome Suki.

Glad your first op was a success.

The pain now sounds awful & whilst I can't help with all of your post I can say that I fell pregnant easily with a 7/6/8cm cyst which ended up being 8/7/10cm 16months later. I had no symptoms of my cyst but it had twisted around my ovary & tube which I had taken out along with the cyst. I have since been told that it is highly likely my son was conceived by my good ovary.

I just thought it may help you to know that cysts do not always prevent pregnancy.

Good luck with your scan & if you don't get the answers you need keep pushing for answers. Some hospitals have Early Pregnancy Units now which can be really helpful.

    All the best.
