Ovarian Dermoid Cyst - Very Painful!!

Posted , 124 users are following.

I started having pain in my lower left side in October of last year, it wasnt too bad so I didnt go to the doctors until january as I thought it may go away. I suspected I may have a Cyst and told the doctor and he refered me for a scan. I had a scan in mid Feb and I was diagnosed with a Dermoid Ovarian Cyst, it was about 3.5cm. I had another scan the other day and it has grown to 5cm. I have been refered to a gynocologist and been told that its going to take 20 weeks. I went back to the doctors because its causing me a lot of pain, but he said just to take pain killers (which doesnt really help) Iv been getting really really tired lately and doctor thinks that it could be related to the cyst.

The pain is getting me down, today I was in agony, I had a really sharp pain and I couldnt move, I was in tears. Im not going to be seen for another 4 months at least and I dont know what to do! Im worried its going to grow bigger.

Has anyone else been through similar experiences? How can I relieve the pain, Iv tired pain killers and warm baths but nothing works. Im only little and worried about how big the cyst is going to get, how quickly do these things grow? Mine got 1.5cm bigger in 5 weeks, so Im hoping it might stop for a bit!

Thank you

Thanks so much for your reply Sonar.

Hugely reassuring because I experienced the same, the cyst was twisting around my left ovary, and although the ovary wasn't removed in my case, my surgeon explained that if I was to conceive it would be via the good one. I read your posts with interest, because you are obviously a healthy young mum, and like lots of women on here you have a positive attitude. I read about your two young children, but assumed they were both conceived before your problems occurred.

Of course I'll still go ahead with the scan, and take the mefenamic acid I've been subscribed during my cycle. And I'll keep pushing, -as you're right to say,- for all the answers. Am quite good at that bit!

    Many many Thanks

Anyone else experiencing pains a year or two after their op, I'd be interested to hear from as well.

Have to say, similar to you Sonar, (I know you didn't have any symptoms), I never experienced consistent pain. Mine occurred only probably about 20 odd times, since my early 20's, but acutely, very intensely on the first hour or so of my period. I would throw up, pass out - ambulance called out a couple of times when I've been with people! Docs have since said it was probably the cyst causing the twisting, stopping the blood flow, but I was confused, that having this somewhat mammoth cyst growing inside me didn't cause more consistent pain. Although I had this horrible experience a week or so ago, there is no bump, no acute pang when I press my abdomen, nothing obvious. Memory cells, I wonder? Period pains I simply have to live with? Anyway, apologies for the waffling. Hoping it may strike a chord with someone.. I should say too, that I had the MRI scan at the time and they assured me it was nothing more sinister

I am a similar age to you with two children aged 4 & 7 mths.

My cyst occurred sometime between my first birth & a miscarriage I had 16 months ago. The miscarriage is the only reason I found out about cyst.

Glad you have the confidence to push for answers as it would seem a lot of people on here needed to to get answers. I have to say I was very fortunate to have had really good care by NHS.

Yes, same here. NHS have been brilliant.

Glad to hear you've got two healthy little ones now.

I am 56 and have had 3 water infections in the last couple of months treated with antibiotics so my Dr sent me for an ultrasound which was yesterday where a 'quite large ' cyst was found. This explains the bladder and

back pain I have been experiencing. I now have to wait to hear from my Dr this week and will probably need an operation. I am worried and scared as have never been in hospital before. How long does the process

take from speaking to your Dr to surgery. Any advice. Thanks.

Hi Regina, I started experiencing abdominal pain in February this year & was finally diagnosed with a dermoid cyst following an ultrasound scan. My GP referred me under the two week rule to see a gynaecologist as he couldn't be sure it wasn't something more sinister than a dermoid - it WAS just a cyst, but I was grateful that I was seen quickly as I was in so much pain. Things slowed a little following my outpatient appointment, which wasn't great - I was seen by a registrar who wasn't the best & sent away with a form to have CA125 tests & told to come back in a month.

I actually work in the NHS so emailed the consultants PA explaining my concerns & that I was having to take a lot of time off work & luckily for me the consultant contacted me & got me booked in for surgery in May. I would hassle everyone as much as you can to try & expedite things quite often the op can be done as a day case so you can be slotted into a surgery list more easily. Good luck xx

    Thank you Karen.

Was your time off work due to your abdominal pain?

How can you get hold of consultant PAs e mails?

May I ask your age group.

    Sorry so many questions.

Many thanks, really appreciate your reply.

Hi Regina, I'm 44 & yes the time off work was for abdominal pain - my GP surgery is not great & I was misdiagnosed a few times with uti, IBS, gallstones & one GP asked if I was imagining the pain! I would have bouts of pain lasting a few days at a time where I was doubled over & could hardly walk. In between these bouts of severe pain I had a constant dull aching in my right side & down my leg, bladder problems (frequently wanting to pass urine) & pain under my ribs.

I found the contact details for my consultant's PA on the hospital website - the hospital in Brighton lists the consultants & the contact details for their PA. If you're local hospital doesn't have this information online you can always ring & ask to speak to the PA once you have a named consultant - they won't be phased by this, they are used to being contacted (I'm a PA in another medical speciality & I get calls from patients all the time!). I think writing or email is better than leaving a phone message as it's harder to ignore.

Hi im 17 years old and have been diagnosed with an ovarian cyst on my right ovary. I have had constant

abdominal pain for over 3 months and have been to hospital 4 times since about it whenever i have went every doctor i have had has told me something different by saying its my bowel problems or i have ibs or its my periods when i knew it wasnt that i know my own body i said! I recently had an ultrasound and they said they couldnt see anything so i had to have an internal ultrasound and thats when they seen it and the woman who was doing the ultrasound went aw im not worried but come back in a month she hadnt even read my notes properly and acted as if it was normal now nearly 4 months later im still in pain and paracetamols dont do anything! I have had all the symptoms and they are saying its nothing to worry about and that they cant do anything but the pain i am in is unbareable!

Thank you Karen, that's really helpful.

I am sorry to hear of your experiences at your GP surgery but hope you are now fully recovered.

My ultrasound appt came within 2 weeks so my next step is the conversation with my Dr when he gets the

results from Saturday sometime this week.

I never realised how supportive and helpful such a forum as this could be.

    Bless you. X

Good luck with your doctors appointment Regina & I hope you get an outpatient appointment soon - after the first appointment was when I had to start hassling as the registrar I saw was almost deciding for me that we could just do nothing! I'm so glad that I had the surgery & am now pain free - hadn't realised how ill I was for the cyst until I had recovered from surgery & felt human again.

Charlotte, you poor thing. Have you got another scan booked to check the size of the cyst? paracetamol did nothing for my pain either - I was on high dose codeine, which made work very difficult as it causes drowsiness. I would go back to your GP and ask for a referral to a gynaecologist if there isn't already one underway - you should not be left to suffer like this.

The woman who was doing my ultrasound said she wants to see me in a month to see if its gone she acted as if she didnt care she left me with un-answered questions. My gp gave me codeine but i was only allowed to take it for 3 days. No i havent been referred they are just making me wait for another month to be in pain they didnt believe me when i said i was in pain they just blamed my bowels or periods. Its daft i will be going to the hospital soon if my pain is still constant im starting to struggle to get to college because of the pain

Charlotte, follow Karen's advise. Hassle your Doctor.

You shouldn't be suffering as you are.

    Be persistent and stay strong.

    Charlotte:

Poor you, that is horrible! If you are 17 , bring your parents/ guardian with you, the GP SHOULD give you a referral to gynaecologist! Maybe GP thinks you just want time out from your school sad

I am sorry this is happening with you.

My GP was ok , I think he first thought I am just saying I have a pain since months, because he said that is my bowel. But he asked for urgent US, and after 3 weeks I got an appointment , and after my abnormal US result he called me straight away ( 2 days after US , and gave me a gynae referral.

...and now I am afraid to go. I posted few days before, I don't want to go, but I was reading my result , and my cyst has multiple septaes plus thick wall- which is not too good as I was reading forums this weekend.

I have my period now, do you think can I still go to see the gynaecologist?

Unfortunately I don't have anybody to support me, so I am so glad I found this forum!
