Ovarian Dermoid Cyst - Very Painful!!

Posted , 124 users are following.

I started having pain in my lower left side in October of last year, it wasnt too bad so I didnt go to the doctors until january as I thought it may go away. I suspected I may have a Cyst and told the doctor and he refered me for a scan. I had a scan in mid Feb and I was diagnosed with a Dermoid Ovarian Cyst, it was about 3.5cm. I had another scan the other day and it has grown to 5cm. I have been refered to a gynocologist and been told that its going to take 20 weeks. I went back to the doctors because its causing me a lot of pain, but he said just to take pain killers (which doesnt really help) Iv been getting really really tired lately and doctor thinks that it could be related to the cyst.

The pain is getting me down, today I was in agony, I had a really sharp pain and I couldnt move, I was in tears. Im not going to be seen for another 4 months at least and I dont know what to do! Im worried its going to grow bigger.

Has anyone else been through similar experiences? How can I relieve the pain, Iv tired pain killers and warm baths but nothing works. Im only little and worried about how big the cyst is going to get, how quickly do these things grow? Mine got 1.5cm bigger in 5 weeks, so Im hoping it might stop for a bit!

Thank you

No I didn't have any bruising by 6 weeks. My belly button was sore for a while but was probably ok by 4 or 5 weeks. I do heal quickly though so 6 weeks may not be so unusual.

I would go & see your GP anyway just to check it out.

Try & rest around work if you can.

    Take care.

    Hi everyone,

I have been having pain for a few years. Recently passed out from the severity of the pain, and ended up in A&E. After a few test and US the consultant said couldn't see anything that caused the severe abdominal pain, but there was fluid which could have been a raptured ovarian cyst. She discharged me with 7 day antibiotics. The antibiotics run out and now the pain is back! Am really torn on what to do next.

    Hi everyone.

Thank you so much for all your posts - they've been so helpful. I'm 54, post menopausal and on HRT. I had severe abdominal pain and vomiting in August - thought it was food poisoning but urine test showed microscopic blood in urine. After 4 positive tests I was referred to a urologist in October who sent me for an ultrasound. This showed a "growth" on my right ovary. I was so terrified but a ct scan and follow up appointment with a gynae oncologist indicated that it was probably a dermoid cyst.

The 9x9cm cyst was removed by keyhole surgery 2 days ago and I came out hospital the same evening. Pain isn't too bad at all. I was interested to see one of you mention acid reflux as something you'd experienced pre op - I had that too along with regular back pain. Hopefully that will have gone along with the lump!

Did any of you have microscopic blood in your urine pre op as I'm still wondering if that was linked to the dermoid cyst? The urologist says it wasn't but I thought I'd check with you knowledgeable ladies as well.

Ooh - and I also meant to ask about waterproof see through dressings. I've got them on the 3 incisions and am not sure when to remove them. The nurse told me to shower rather than have a bath for 5 days but I should have asked about the see through dressings as well!

    I'm glad you're surgery went well !

I'm a dermatology nurse, we are doing surgerys- so with a dressing, I

would say you can remove it now, have a shower normally, dab it dry, and put a clean plaster until the stitched come out.

Hi all I wonder if I can help any of you're questions last year I had found out I had a large cyst then after a cat scan then there was 2!!! So they said I needed surgery to remove them so in quite a rush I was whipped in and turns i had 5 which apparently do not attach but mine did so I lost my left tube and he had to save my right 1 which was re built but was not sure if it would work and now I'm on high dose of hrt patches . I had pain like u would never believe as my bowel had twisted and I was rushed back in another opp let home again and yes back in as I had an absess inside another opp. I had an eperdural during my first opp which I swear now is causing my back pain yes I have now got a worn disc I put it down to all the other 3 opps and was told my body need to heal so a year later and now Im feeling squashed inside but did not no if I wa stupid if the cyst can come back due to all what has happened and if my back is related thanks

Was wondering if anyone had the same symptoms, are or was in the same situation.

I have left sided abdominal pain which feels like stabbing, it is not unbearable but is makin me feel generally ill and panicked, I also feel very sickly and cannot eat. I went to A&E two days ago with the pain, they told me too see my GP so they could organise a scan, my GP checked my urine, stomach, blood pressure, temp etc and said to come back if I had the same pain next week and ignored my comment about a scan, I have become very worried and believe the worry is causing my pain to feel worse and am very confused as what to do now about it and whether the symptoms are anything to worry about.

i too have been diagnosed with what looks like a dermoid cyst on my left ovary along with a couple of standard ovarian cysts apparently it is hard to see these dermoid ones on a regular ultrasound so i am having an mri next week the gyny doc that did the ultrasound thinks the dermoid is around 6.5cm and needs to be removed asap as its in a position to contort and ive been told that is agonising... just reading all your posts i can see a lot of you have had unexplained tiredness, i have been the same for quite a while and worried it was something more sinister. i have a feeling this must be one of the symptoms of the nasty dermoid so hoping that once they whip it out i should be full of energy... heres hoping..... forgot to mention the way it was found.. i was pregnant and they thought because of the pain it was an eptopic. unfortunately i miscarried 2 weeks ago but to be honest i just want to get this thing out of me now ... good luck to you all in your future treatment xx

Hi wandering if anyone on here can relate to symptoms ive been getting. To cut a long story short I had an ultrasound scan in december 2013 after 6 months of investigations due to diarrhoea, constipation and abdominal pain. Had colonoscopy and barium enema all come back normal. Then sent for scan and found 5cm cyst on right ovary. Gotta have repeat scan 10 weeks from last scan to determine if its a functional cyst. Im getting constant back pain, pain what feels like period pains in thighs although I had a hysterectomy 11 years ago. Ovaeies were kept. I get bloating where I feel uncomfortable and generally feeling tired. Been to see gp tonight for ca125 and other blood results. Gp states bloods all normal however I noticed ca125 level was 39 but she says this is fine. She is now sending for urgent scan. Am I worrying about nothing?

I was told I had a dermoid cyst a number of years ago. It was only detected from an X-ray and I was under the impression that it was small. In July, my back started to really bother me and I was having a lot of problems with sitting. I went for an MRI and was told the cyst was 10x9x8 cms and that it was on my ovary. When I seen the surgeon in October, he said it would be a 4-6 month waiting list. I've finally got word that surgery could be end of February/beginning of March. I'm really afraid that it's not the cyst that's causing my back pain. From what I hear from most people, they have a lot of different symptoms. All I have is lower back pain right around my tailbone. I'm tired of living with back pain and the more I read, the more I'm convinced it's not the cyst that's causing my pain. Has anyone experienced just back pain?

    I appreciate any feedback smile

    Hi

I too had back pain. I've had lower back pain for about 20 years, with sacro-iliac/ pelvis problems on and off, but over the past 12 months it had been bad most of the time with more severe back pain every month or so rather than once every 6-9 months.

My CT scan showed that I have spondylolisthesis, so that would account for the lower back pain, but since I had my dermoid cyst removed in early December (9x9cm) I have much less discomfort and times when I have no back pain at all. I'm now wondering whether the cyst, which it seems was very solid due to its contents, was pushing against something that pushed against my back or whether the weight was placing pressure on my dodgy lower back.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that your back pain is eased, or even removed, by having your dermoid cyst removed.

    Good luck.

Wow what a coincidence. I have spondylolithesis. I was diagnosed when I was a teenager. It's caused some problems but nothing like this. I went to a spine assessment clinic and the physiotherapist said my back pain was a flare up from the spondylolithesis but I've never experienced anything like this. I've had back pain everyday all day since July 2013. It's gotten worse over the last month where now being on my feet hurts also, not just sitting. It's scary to think I may have to live with this pain for the rest of my life (I'm only 36) if the cyst removal doesn't help.

Thank you very much for the feedback smile

Since my last post ive had mri and received appointment to see consultant on 17th april bloody wished it was sooner cant take much more of the dodgey symptoms of this dermoid and fed up with painkillers... just read some of the recent posts and i too was 'diagnosed' with degenerative discs in my lower back but the last yr its been painfull enough to have to take a concoction of painkillers every day.... im hoping once the dermoid has gone maybe the backpain will too...crossed fingers !!

Good luck with your op. It seems logical that those of us with lower back problems experience back pain when there's something heavy, and growing, in one side of our body......even if it's only a pound or so in weight, that imbalance over time could lead to constant pain.

I'm now 6-7 weeks on following my op and am so thrilled that I only have minor twinges in my back. I wish you all the best - hopefully your pain will significantly diminish....seems like a good chance it will. Let us know how you get on.
