Ovarian Dermoid Cyst - Very Painful!!

Posted , 124 users are following.

I started having pain in my lower left side in October of last year, it wasnt too bad so I didnt go to the doctors until january as I thought it may go away. I suspected I may have a Cyst and told the doctor and he refered me for a scan. I had a scan in mid Feb and I was diagnosed with a Dermoid Ovarian Cyst, it was about 3.5cm. I had another scan the other day and it has grown to 5cm. I have been refered to a gynocologist and been told that its going to take 20 weeks. I went back to the doctors because its causing me a lot of pain, but he said just to take pain killers (which doesnt really help) Iv been getting really really tired lately and doctor thinks that it could be related to the cyst.

The pain is getting me down, today I was in agony, I had a really sharp pain and I couldnt move, I was in tears. Im not going to be seen for another 4 months at least and I dont know what to do! Im worried its going to grow bigger.

Has anyone else been through similar experiences? How can I relieve the pain, Iv tired pain killers and warm baths but nothing works. Im only little and worried about how big the cyst is going to get, how quickly do these things grow? Mine got 1.5cm bigger in 5 weeks, so Im hoping it might stop for a bit!

Thank you

Hi I found this forum really useful before & after my cyst, ovary & tube removal. Nearly 4 months on all is well but I have noticed some symptoms that I wondered if anyone else had/has?

I have taken up running again but I'm finding that after a run (&sometimes during) getting cramping pain in my remaining ovary. My period have been all over the place too.

Just wondered if anyone else suffered with pain from remaining ovary outside of menstral cycle??

Hi ladies I was here before.

I just had an US today again after two months, and it's says 5 cm mass in a left ovary , and free fluid seen in the pelvis.

In November it was a complex ovarian cyst 4 cm.

I don't have my follow up appointmentent until the end of April.

Should I worry and try to see my doctor before?

Hello ladies, December 28th i went in A&E for severe abdominal pain, and my stomach started to swell also. i was clueless as to what was happening to me. the doctor did blood test and didn't find anything out of the ordinary. so i end up having a scan then i was told that i had a cyst (12cm dermoid cyst) which was ruptured and leaking fluid into my abdomen. i had to stay in hospital and had an emergency laparotomy surgery the following morning, i had to have my right ovary removed because of the torsion it cut of circulation to my ovary which caused it to be removed. i came out on news years day. my stayed was pleasant. after 6 weeks recovering am now doing walking as a form if exercise until am completely healed inside. now am back to work. good luck ladies, am feeling so much better than before.

Hi everyone, im 24 years old and i experienced pain in my lower left abdomen, i was diagnosed of having 4.5 cm dermoid cyst in my left ovary. I havent had my period yet for 4 months now. I was advised my my doctor to take medicine to have my period but it seems its not working, she said i cant have my surgery if i havent have my period yet because she wants an ultrasound again to see if having my period will have the size of the cyst be smaller? Im not sure. She said she will just give me medicines to take if the cyst is below 5cm in size.

I hole someone can help me, its really painful. Thats why if i were to choose i want it to be remove asap.

    Hello,

I had extreme lower back pain for three+ years. Unable to bear weight and having to take arcoxia 120 daily until side effects caused me broncial infections, so i changed to predisone. By chance when under going MRI for lower back they caught a glimpse of what was a large 12cm x 10cm x 9cm Dermoid. All doctors i was in discussion with advised it could not be the cause of my severe back pain (back pain was so great that i could not get t the toilet and called an ambulance only to be sent home with more pain killers) It took ages for the surgery - almost another year and the side effects of predisone are not good. My doctor was very slow to act, really didn't listen and seemed to have concern only about the the public purse. We paid for the MRI as waiting any longer was proving unbearable. 10 days ago, the surgery was fast and straight forward, i felt so much better instantly and i stopped all pain and anti inflam three days post surgery and have had no back pain. I was also seeing a back surgeon, prepared to operate if this surgery did not remedy the pain, he too was doubtful the dermoid was my cause as i do have a L5/S1 issue. I also had a specialist ready to inject cortisone into my SI joint and it was only the MRI and dermoid discovery stopped this.

All i can say is that failure to identify this earlier cost me and my family emotionally (hard to look after children when in continual pain, very unfair on them), physically and financially (was earning well, really our planned retirement kitty and university fund gone) as i had to stop work. I have huge compassion for all those with much worse ongoing pain and disablement so please push your doctors hard if you have any lower back and buttock pain, feeling tired. Dont put it down to age (i'm 50) as i did because i feel really good now. My head is clearer, but my eyesight went from 20/20 to very fuzzy, probably the drugs, but who knows. I am soo much more mobile already, can touch the floor easily when i couldn't put on my shoes! The wound (about 12cm) is low just above pubic hair and has some burning pain, but its nothing and i have been able to do most things instantly even though told to take it easy. Its like night and day! Take care Carolyn

Karen168, thx so much for your post. You give me some hope. I have a 10 cm dermoid cyst on my ovary and have had so much back pain but back pain only. I've been working reduced hours at work bc I can't sit for prolonged periods at a time. The doctors aren't sure if removal of the cyst will help but we're doing it anyway. I'm scheduled for surgery next week and very anxious and hoping and praying it helps. I'm so sorry you've had to go through what you went through and hope your recovery continues for the better smile

I also have other back problems that could be contributing to the pain but I've never experienced this kind of back pain before and for so long. My pain doesn't sound as bad as yours as I don't really take anything for the pain. I just spend a lot of time lying down which gives me the most relief.

I will keep you posted on my recovery smile

Hi Im wondering if anyone can help me.

I had my 10cm Dermoid cyst removed last week through key hole surgery along with my right tube and ovary. I am now getting stich/stabbing like pains on my left side below where the left incision was made and sometimes feels as though its in my pelvis too.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this. Its not a constant bad pain but sometimes it really hurts and is quite uncomfortable. Im a little worried as i have only been signed off work for another week and have quite a physical job.

Zoe I had the same op as u & same stabbing pain below cut as if where Ovary was. It does go after a while. I only got when sitting watch TV & never whilst running around after two small children. Think it only lasted a little while.

    Thankyou.

Fingers crossed I will be back to normal in a week or so. Might just take a couple of extra days off work just to be on the safe side.

How did everyone elses wounds heal. I had 3 small incisions one on my right which is about 1cm one in my tummy button and one on my left side which is about 2cm. The one on my left looks sort of indented not sure if this is normal or not. I wasnt really told a great deal before the op or what to expect after.

This forum has been a god send and has helped me through so thankyou everyone :-) xxx

Hi everyone, I'm schedule for surgery on Thursday to remove 10cm dermoid cyst from my ovary. The surgery is set up as laprascopic but there's a 50% chance he'll have to do a laparotomy. I'm kicking myself now that I asked no questions about the recovery time for either surgery. I have no idea how much time I'll need to take off work or how I'll feel. How sore am I going to be with either surgery? I'm trying to think positive and that I'll only end up with laprascopic surgery but I have no clue how things will be afterwards. How about hospital stay? If I end up with laparotomy, will I be admitted?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated. My surgery is out of town and have no idea how long I should be prepared to be gone for if I end up having the laparotomy.

    Thanks,

    Marian

I had two keyhole scars and one, just above my pubic bone, that was about 3cm long - the surgeon said that the dermoid cyst couldn't be deflated far enough, as it was full of hair, so they needed to enlarge the hole to remove it all. All scars have healed very well - the large one is indented ie there is a fold above it. I'm not overweight, and didn't have too much flab there in the first place, but I don't really care what it looks like as I'm just so pleased that I've recovered so well. I hope things continue well for you.

Hi Marian. I had laproscopic surgery and had hoped to be fully fit after one week - the nurse warned me that that wouldn't be the case (in contrast to what the surgeon had told me) and she was right. Whilst I could stroll around after a week, I felt tired if I walked half a mile or more and my body kept telling me to sit down and rest in the afternoons. I was out and about again after 2 weeks.

I didn't feel very sore after the surgery - I'd been given strong painkillers to take for the first 2 nights, to help me sleep, but I didn't need them and just had the paracetamol and iburprofen. The main issue was just not being able to move around too easily and being aware that I shouldn't strain too much when going to the loo.

I had my op at 10am in the morning and left the hospital at 9pm the same evening. I'd have been able to leave earlier but hadn't wee'd enough - if I remember correctly, they wanted me to provide about 300ml for them to be satisfied that my bladder was okay.

    Hi Mdmarian77

Fingers crossed you do have a laparoscopy. I had a laparotomy end of Oct last year to remove a 12cm dermoid. I had a 2 night hospital stay and to be honest the 1st week was horrible!! Laughing, sneezing, coughing were agony...it does get better but you MUST take it easy.

Hoovering & driving are a no, no for at least 4-5 weeks depending on your recovery. I'm now 4 months post op, my swelling is now returning to normal and I do everything i was doing beforehand. Ony difficulty at times is when I'm at the gym...lower stomach exercises are uncomfortable as I'm trying to rebuild the muscle. As for time of work I would say at least 6 weeks!

The best thing is to go at your pace DO NOT push yourself as this can have a knock on effect.

Some things I would recommend for post op.......pillow for journey home in car, laxatives to empty bowels as you do not want to push at all, peppermint tea to aid digestion & bio oil to massage into scar once healed.

Good luck & keep us postedsmile xx
