Ovarian Dermoid Cyst - Very Painful!!

I started having pain in my lower left side in October of last year, it wasnt too bad so I didnt go to the doctors until january as I thought it may go away. I suspected I may have a Cyst and told the doctor and he refered me for a scan. I had a scan in mid Feb and I was diagnosed with a Dermoid Ovarian Cyst, it was about 3.5cm. I had another scan the other day and it has grown to 5cm. I have been refered to a gynocologist and been told that its going to take 20 weeks. I went back to the doctors because its causing me a lot of pain, but he said just to take pain killers (which doesnt really help) Iv been getting really really tired lately and doctor thinks that it could be related to the cyst.
The pain is getting me down, today I was in agony, I had a really sharp pain and I couldnt move, I was in tears. Im not going to be seen for another 4 months at least and I dont know what to do! Im worried its going to grow bigger.
Has anyone else been through similar experiences? How can I relieve the pain, Iv tired pain killers and warm baths but nothing works. Im only little and worried about how big the cyst is going to get, how quickly do these things grow? Mine got 1.5cm bigger in 5 weeks, so Im hoping it might stop for a bit!
Thank you

I have taken up running again but I'm finding that after a run (&sometimes during) getting cramping pain in my remaining ovary. My period have been all over the place too.
Just wondered if anyone else suffered with pain from remaining ovary outside of menstral cycle??

I just had an US today again after two months, and it's says 5 cm mass in a left ovary , and free fluid seen in the pelvis.
In November it was a complex ovarian cyst 4 cm.
I don't have my follow up appointmentent until the end of April.
Should I worry and try to see my doctor before?

I had extreme lower back pain for three+ years. Unable to bear weight and having to take arcoxia 120 daily until side effects caused me broncial infections, so i changed to predisone. By chance when under going MRI for lower back they caught a glimpse of what was a large 12cm x 10cm x 9cm Dermoid. All doctors i was in discussion with advised it could not be the cause of my severe back pain (back pain was so great that i could not get t the toilet and called an ambulance only to be sent home with more pain killers) It took ages for the surgery - almost another year and the side effects of predisone are not good. My doctor was very slow to act, really didn't listen and seemed to have concern only about the the public purse. We paid for the MRI as waiting any longer was proving unbearable. 10 days ago, the surgery was fast and straight forward, i felt so much better instantly and i stopped all pain and anti inflam three days post surgery and have had no back pain. I was also seeing a back surgeon, prepared to operate if this surgery did not remedy the pain, he too was doubtful the dermoid was my cause as i do have a L5/S1 issue. I also had a specialist ready to inject cortisone into my SI joint and it was only the MRI and dermoid discovery stopped this.
All i can say is that failure to identify this earlier cost me and my family emotionally (hard to look after children when in continual pain, very unfair on them), physically and financially (was earning well, really our planned retirement kitty and university fund gone) as i had to stop work. I have huge compassion for all those with much worse ongoing pain and disablement so please push your doctors hard if you have any lower back and buttock pain, feeling tired. Dont put it down to age (i'm 50) as i did because i feel really good now. My head is clearer, but my eyesight went from 20/20 to very fuzzy, probably the drugs, but who knows. I am soo much more mobile already, can touch the floor easily when i couldn't put on my shoes! The wound (about 12cm) is low just above pubic hair and has some burning pain, but its nothing and i have been able to do most things instantly even though told to take it easy. Its like night and day! Take care Carolyn

Did you have the ovary removed along with the cyst? Just curious. Thank you.

I also have other back problems that could be contributing to the pain but I've never experienced this kind of back pain before and for so long. My pain doesn't sound as bad as yours as I don't really take anything for the pain. I just spend a lot of time lying down which gives me the most relief.
I will keep you posted on my recovery

I had my 10cm Dermoid cyst removed last week through key hole surgery along with my right tube and ovary. I am now getting stich/stabbing like pains on my left side below where the left incision was made and sometimes feels as though its in my pelvis too.
I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this. Its not a constant bad pain but sometimes it really hurts and is quite uncomfortable. Im a little worried as i have only been signed off work for another week and have quite a physical job.

Fingers crossed I will be back to normal in a week or so. Might just take a couple of extra days off work just to be on the safe side.
How did everyone elses wounds heal. I had 3 small incisions one on my right which is about 1cm one in my tummy button and one on my left side which is about 2cm. The one on my left looks sort of indented not sure if this is normal or not. I wasnt really told a great deal before the op or what to expect after.
This forum has been a god send and has helped me through so thankyou everyone :-) xxx

Any answers would be greatly appreciated. My surgery is out of town and have no idea how long I should be prepared to be gone for if I end up having the laparotomy.
Thanks,
Marian

I didn't feel very sore after the surgery - I'd been given strong painkillers to take for the first 2 nights, to help me sleep, but I didn't need them and just had the paracetamol and iburprofen. The main issue was just not being able to move around too easily and being aware that I shouldn't strain too much when going to the loo.
I had my op at 10am in the morning and left the hospital at 9pm the same evening. I'd have been able to leave earlier but hadn't wee'd enough - if I remember correctly, they wanted me to provide about 300ml for them to be satisfied that my bladder was okay.

Fingers crossed you do have a laparoscopy. I had a laparotomy end of Oct last year to remove a 12cm dermoid. I had a 2 night hospital stay and to be honest the 1st week was horrible!! Laughing, sneezing, coughing were agony...it does get better but you MUST take it easy.
Hoovering & driving are a no, no for at least 4-5 weeks depending on your recovery. I'm now 4 months post op, my swelling is now returning to normal and I do everything i was doing beforehand. Ony difficulty at times is when I'm at the gym...lower stomach exercises are uncomfortable as I'm trying to rebuild the muscle. As for time of work I would say at least 6 weeks!
The best thing is to go at your pace DO NOT push yourself as this can have a knock on effect.
Some things I would recommend for post op.......pillow for journey home in car, laxatives to empty bowels as you do not want to push at all, peppermint tea to aid digestion & bio oil to massage into scar once healed.
Good luck & keep us posted
