Over Corrected REDO surgery?

Posted , 7 users are following.

My eyes were over corrected from glasses( -5.0 R and -4.25 L; +2.25 for progressive, no astigmatism,) with a single +13.0 single vision standard technis abbott lens. (Seems strange to have same Rx lens despite never being same for past 50 years?)

Post op - I was over corrected as now I need a +.5 in both eye glasses for distance and a +2.5 for reading.  Overcorrection sucks as it reduced mid range vision as well and forces stronger readers, which distort more.  Also as we age I believe the eye ball can change (smaller) thus making the need for even stronger + scripts for glasses.  Bottom line....surgery was one month ago....should I redo with better lens implants?? I am considering a redo with ORA performed.

Prior to surgery, I was never told about LACS or ORA by 2 drs.  Found out about ORA and LACS at this site...thanks but wish it has been before.

Steve can you give an update now? Wondering how your vision is improving?

I’m a previous lasik patient would underwent cataract surgery dec 2107 with restor multifocal 2.5lens  In dominate eye and multifocal toric in other eye. Did an exchange in non dominate eye April 2018 and not sure what actual RX  but can see @ 20/40 in dominate and dr says 20/20 in non. Which is bs. I have ghosting in both eyes...next step is yag but I’m not sure yet. PRK or lasik if old flap can be lifted is last step ( with another dr).

Looks like one year or more before final results from cataract surgery is becoming he average.

How was the actual recovery period from PRK. Could you function normally for that time period with the lens on?

Hi Julielyn.  Just for proper info.  I never had lasik or PRK prior to cataract surgery.  I did have YAG and then PRK.  YAG about 7 months post cat, and PRK about 9 months post Cataract.  So yes PRK went pretty good.  First week of post PRK was blurry due to temp plano lense, but I could drive and read.

Now it has been 3.5 months and vision continues to get better, but slowly.  So I am about 20/25 R and 20/30 Left.  a -.25 lens seems to bring them in about perfect for distance.  I will always need a +2 ish reader lens as I did distance only correction.

I still notice lack of contrast/vision in low light situations.  I also get just a bit of glare with LED lighting and a "haze" around headlights-single point lights.  But overall pretty good, not frustrating as it was.

Thank you Steve for your reply. I appreciate knowing the time line for recovery as my dr doesn’t fill me in on anything other than pamphlet info. Very discouraging. He did say that recovery from PRK was “horrible” so if I can reopen my lasik flap that would be the best option. Dr says oh, one week later we can do PRK after yag. He’s not the one recovering or doing the PRK so I’ve come to ask people who have actually gone through the procedure.

So I think I missed the point of why you went in to have PRK. Didn’t your dr say he could get you to 0? But that wasn’t your final results?  A bit confused as to how far off your lens was in order to get PRK.

      Thanks again smile

I was over corrected with the cataract lenses.  I was off by +.5 and +.75.  I really hated over correction.  Thus PRK was done and is now very close to 0-plano.  Dr claims 3-6 months for eyes to correct to the plano RX as intended by PRK.  In fact he has seen eyes still correcting for up to a year post PRK.  So still TBD for totally correct.  First 2 months after PRK, eyes changed for the better fast. Now is very slow, but I did notice in month 3 L eye went from a -0.5 to a -0.25.  So yes I like the slight nearsighted much better than the farsighted vision.  3 month R eye seems to not change much...but is very close to 20/20 distance.   What is your latest plan now?

So far I’ve made an evaluation appointment at the recommended lasik/PRK center in Miami. I also have sent in an email to my original lasik company from 2001. Hopefully I will hear back more information from them or set up an evaluation as another opinion. I’m holding off on yag for a couple of reasons.

1.the eye the dr wants to do yag in now is the lens that I beloved moved during steroid drop reduction reaction. My vision hasn’t returned to what it was before the episode of pain and watering and I had a few days of cloudy vision. ( I was switched to another steroid drop at my next visit—this was a horrible reaction—-woke up at 5am, eyes in so much pain watering profusely and I made it to the bathroom by feel, found my sunglasses to get to the living room to put in more drops...I couldn’t see much out of left eye then.  When I went for a second opinion back in March, dr wrote down “slight tilt” in my chart) I would like to hear if this is ok to proceed with yag with the lens in its current position. In previous visits the dr said we will exchange, now he’s changed his mind again

      2. Does this lens need to be repositioned? Is it centered? Does the tilt affect the lasik results? Does the lens need to be exchanged? ( obviously by another dr) also the model is the same # as a recalled lens in the Japanese market, but I had the same issues as the recall.

As for the right eye. Dr claims I’m .25 off ( I don’t know if I’m negative or positive) but I see a shadow effect up at the 2 o’Clock position. Is this considered an astigmatism, if so why do I have a toric lens in place not correcting the astigmatism?

My dr just says hmmm when I ask specific questions. And says. Let’s do yag. “ were in our way”

      Very frustrating.

      Thanks for asking

The FDA site did specify that 'the lenses subject to this correction are manufactured specifically for Japan', and the recall was terminated  on June 30, 2017.

Yet from the accessdata, out of the 27 reports (filed on 2018 January to May 01), about a third of them mentioned "inflammation" or "glistening" and "sub-surface nano glistenings (ssng)".
