Yes, in the beginning it's very hard to lift your leg. The hospital gave me a long scarf like thing to put under my ankle so I could use it to lift my leg to help me get out of bed. It was very difficult for at least a couple of weeks. I used to say it felt like my leg was
filled with cement. It will get so much easier. How long ago was your surgery?

I had the anterior approach so my scar is on the front of my hip and it was stitches that dissolved and glue. You are still very early on in the process so it seems the leg heaviness is a normal part of healing. I was only 37 at the time of my surgery so for some reason I was expecting to bounce back quickly, but it definitely took longer than I expected. But once the pain and stiffness started to subside I felt better and better every day. You will probably turn a corner soon and see so much improvement! Best of luck to you!

i had a total hip replacement on august 20th so it has been over 2 and a half months for me. omg at first it was so painful, my leg felt like it weighed 1000 pounds. i couldnt roll on my good side in bed, had to take painkillers every couple of hours and i didnt like taking them caus they made me sleepy. at the beginning i regreted getting the surgery but now i am so happy i got the courage to go through with it. no more pain from the damaged hip, that pain is gone. using a cane to walk but thats ok, i am still recovering and still healing. hoping to go back to work soon. i am very lucky, ive heard about some peoples experience with surgery and it wasnt good. but i am so grateful for my surgeon. he has chaged my life for the better. i have heard people talk negative about him but i have never had a problem with him. some people like doctors and some dont for some reason but thats not my problem, its theres.
it will get better, i didnt believe it would but i am doing great as far as i know. my doctor told me hes done over 3000 surgeries so i think he knows what hes talking about. all the best and take it one day at a time.

Sorry I have no pain in left hip after THR but the left knee is still very stiff at 7 week after surgery. Today I did ans was able to walk one of my horses almost 3/4 of a mile with no soreness in other arthritic hip or arthritic knees. One small step for man and a good walk for a horse with leg issues too. We both work together. I'm amazed by the number of people with hip pain after THR. I did research and found the BEST hip surgeon in WNY. His specific after surgery directions are the cue to better after care. Keep plugging.

hi if you only had your OP 30th oct it's still very early days. my advise is make sure you keep on top of the pain so you can move abt. I'd read beforehand you need to walk /move your hip every 2 hrs at least during the day and I did that. but as I live alone it wasnt hard - needing a drink etc.
as others sd your leg does feel heavy and hard to move but use a leg lift aid or rolled up towel / dressing gown tie to help lift your leg. the exercises you need to do I was advised by physio to start with x 3 at a time and gradually build up to the 10 x theyd advised. I think a lot depends on how good / bad your muscles are pre OP. I'd not been walking right for a few yrs so its took me time to improve but I'm getting there. I'm 6 months post op and I cant believe the difference.
keep at it - you'll get there.
best wishes

Hi Frances The first 2 weeks are the worst but after that it gets better every day. My surgery was 25 September. After the op I cried when I tried to lift my leg. I have to have the other hip done as well and at first I said never again but stick with it and do the exercises. I know they hurt but they are the most important key to recovery. Best of luck - it does get better. Gill

i felt as if my leg was a tree trunk it was misery trying to get in and out of bed. A carer I had engaged to help me change the stockings contacted the local occupational health service and they visited to assess and brought me a 'leg lifter'.It looks like a dog collar on a lead and made a huge difference especially because my bladder had been affected by the op and I was having to go to the loo 3 or 4 times a night. Strongly recommend this device. It also helped me to lift my leg on to pillows to help the swelling go down. I needed it fo about 3 weeks. Good luck.

I had my the 25th july this year .and I have been on the site since then . A common theme I read is that for some reason a lot of people dont seem to know what to expect after this major surgery in relation to pain ,excercise and do's and dont's . I religeously did my excercises discomfort or not as I was advised of course you may be in pain/discomfort its only natural. I would say on a sore of 1-10 for first week I was a 4 but before surgery at night I was a firm 6 at times . I walked a few miles every day from day 2 and did the excercises 4-5 times a day . Keep the chin up and in another few days things will feel better .

Hi Frances
This site kept me sane after my op as until i found it i thought it was me doing things wrong and the words of encouragement from people who are going through the same thing really helps so much.
As others have said after a couple of weeks everything starts to improve so hang in there with the meds (always stay in front )
am post 8 weeks , still using a stick as still having to build on my muscles but am ok with that, hardly take any meds at all its if and when for me now , something i could only dream off a few months ago, am walking every day and further all the time, even hoping to be back at work before the new year. just remember to listen to your body , lots of rest and stay positive.
