my pain was soreness, not pain. i did my PT faithfully and walked alot, was st work 4 weeks later. the more you move the less pain

your correct it's just soreness and lack of using muscle. Walk as far as you can and keep moving is the trick.

My gosh, you have only just had your op. It is a major operation and you would not expect to be up and running around as soon as it is done. I found my leg heavy when getting in and out of bed and used the scarf thing given me by the hospital. I then found some days I did not need it and other days I did, until I was able to discard it. Rest for the first couple of weeks and then slowly build yourself up and just don't overdo things. Have you seen a video of the op on Youtube? Also food has no calories after a hip op particularly chocolate!!

Hi I haven't had my hip replacement yet but have a bad case of disintegration of my left hip after a fracture so for 3.5 years I have been on crutches and have learnt lots of ways of manoeuvring around including the bedroom, I sleep on my right side with a pillow in between my thighs/knees.
To get into bed I sit on the side of the bed and I hook my right foot under my left leg and lift it up, if your sleeping on your back still you can push your left leg further over the bed and if its your other leg then do the opposite.
To get out do the reverse.

i'm sure I was told not to cross over my feet after the operation because of risk of dislocation. apologies if I'm misremembering.

Alexandria,
It is going to be harder when you have your hip replaced, at the moment you have more movement and you do not have to protect your hip from dislocation. Have you seen the consultant and got a date.

Hello Frances,
I did not have any pain after my op and did not need painkillers but, the nurses would not listen! It was a week before I could lift my leg up on it's own, it was a case of lifting it with my hands to do exercises.

I had a strip of cloth given to me by the hospital to haul my leg in and out of bed which was brilliant. I had no pain afterwards but was given tramadol. I hid the tablets in my sponge bag and was really worried it would fall on the floor and all the tablets would fall out!! Luckily that did not happen.

if you do this you have to be careful not to bend over too far keeping to the 90 degree rule.

Absolutely Yvonne, lying or sitting in bed and lifting the thigh, you do not break the rules which I was very careful about for my twelve week precautions.
