pain and stiffness when standing...how long does this last

Posted , 12 users are following.

I'm only coming up on 5 weeks so still early in recovery and if I sit more than a half hour...45 minutes I'm very stiff when I  get up to walk and it hurts.  Does this last even after more time healing? You feel comfortable sitting but ouch when you first get up. I hope that goes away eventually?

Hi Caren I’ve had the same problem with my first THR that was done a year ago.

My surgeons asst called it startup pain. I’ve tried stretching and physical therapy but what has helped me the most was walking and deep tissue massage.

I was very discouraged when this started a couple of months after surgery. But happy that walking helped. Here I am13 days post on my second THR and I’m afraid to go through the same thing.

    Good luck.

      Hi Dsilk05

Now that you are 14 days in with your second THR, how are you doing so far?

I'm going to go out on a limb here & show my stupidity, but I've read several times people talking about the benefit of deep tissue massage. Do you go to a massage therapist for this or does your PT do it? And the really dumb question: are they massaging your entire lower body or just the incision/scar tissue? I was told to massage my scar tissue myself 3 x a day.

I also wondered how soon would be safe for deep tissue massage - can the muscles be injured if they are still healing?

Thanks for bearing with me & my ignorance 😬

Hi Betty. I’m doing well so far as I have not noticed any startup pain.

I have wondered myself how long should I wait until I even give myself a massage of my thigh with the new THR. I have noticed in my other thigh the scar tissue sure starts building up quickly so I myself massage it a lil bit.

Yes I go to a massage therapist and I have had her work only on one leg when I was going. She worked on the thigh mostly for half an hour and some on my lower leg but that was it. I wanted her to focus only in that area.  I also did have a couple of knots in my thigh she massaged out.

I hope if you try this it does help you or whoever tries it.

It’s very discouraging having this huge surgery done and come to find out we are still dealing with something afterwards.

      Thank you Dsilk,

Yes, I noticed how quickly the scar tissue built up on me as well! I've not been very good about massaging it myself though, which I was told to do 3x a day. I feel I'm on overload with all that I'm supposed to do! I know walking is an important part of healing but I've been so consumed with the PT exercises that I've not had time to really incorporate walking into my routine except for daily activities. Yesterday however I started walking on the treadmill and plan to do that daily and try and walk longer a little bit each day to build myself up again.

So nice to talk to others in the same boat! Hope your recovery with your second THR continues to go well for you!

Hi Betty. I will take back what I had said. Startup pain has begun the more I sit in a chair or sofa. I’m very discouraged.

Getting out of bed of course is fine as legs are straightened out wen laying or reclining.

Hope u do better than me.

      Dear Dsilk

Sorry if you have already told us but what approach did your surgeon use please?

    Dear Caren

We are all different in so many ways so what is normal for one person will not be for another person.

I suggest that things will improve with more exercise. Just a thought is your chair too low? Perhaps you are breaking the ninety degree rule or coming too close to doing so.

    Cheers Richard

I had stiffness when getting up from sitting for some time, I can't actually remember when it disappeared, but it did eventually.  Yes, I remember the routine when getting up, the groan as you straighten up and lumber forward cry

    Hi Caren,

I’m 11 weeks out, still pain, especially when I get up from sitting awhile. When I’m sleeping pain on my right side all the way down to my ankle.  My feet are still swollen.  I guess this will take time, I hope!

Hi Steven. I’m sure it will take time. And all THRs are different.

The THR I just had is different from the first one a year ago. First one was so easy.

I’m very pain tolerant but I am uncomfortable in the thigh area this time. Last nite I had more discomfort in the knee and the side where ur pelvic bone is. I didn’t understand it. Only thought was if I had overdone my stretching exercises. After a couple hours it finally subsided.

Yes I’m a bit discouraged. I need to remind myself I need to be patient but I’m not the patient type

Wishing you well and that your pain subsides completely.

Hi Steven I was wondering how u were doing? I’m almost 9 wks post op with lots of pain/discomfort. Doc says it’s a pinched nerve. Pain in buttocks down side of thigh and knee, down shin to top of foot. Can’t lay on opposite side for more than 15 mins.

      Hope you are doing better.

      Hi dailk5,

I’m sorry for your discomfort.  I’m almost17 weeks.  I have the same problem.  Further, I constantly have pins and needles in both feet.  My surgeon says to see a my neurologist.  When I go to him, he’ll probably give the same diagnosis as you. As a more happier thought, during the daytime, It’s the opposite!  Very little pain.  I’ll tell you more when you more when I see him, in a couple of weeks.

      Regards,

      Steve
