pain and stiffness when standing...how long does this last

I'm only coming up on 5 weeks so still early in recovery and if I sit more than a half hour...45 minutes I'm very stiff when I  get up to walk and it hurts.  Does this last even after more time healing? You feel comfortable sitting but ouch when you first get up. I hope that goes away eventually?

I suggest that you revert to using both crutches until you are walking strongly without limping and with a good gait. I think you will make a quicker recovery and be less likely to put your back out of kilter.

      Cheers Richard

      Dear Susan

It seems that some doctors and physics push to have their patients struggling, limping and putting their backs at risk by getting them to go from two crutches to one far too soon., I personally believe that this is muddled thinking!

If you are using two crutches you give your body the very best chance of getting into the habit of walking correctly. This IS important especially if you have been in pain before your surgery which most people have been.

The second reason is that your body has a lot of healing to do, especially the muscles that should be supporting you. During the muscle strengthening phase with crutches you will be giving them the amount of support they require rather than subjecting them to unnecessary stress.

As your muscles regain their strength you should find that you are naturally reducing the support you are giving through your crutches and then one magical day you will realize that you can walk strongly and with a good balanced gait without them!

Try it for a week or two or whatever amount of time you need.

      Good luck, Richard
