Pain/discomfort under right rib cage.

I have been experiencing this for the last few months, I have been searching the web looking for answers.  I am a 45 year old female, in good health, I take no medications, thin, active, I eat healthy, so I am at a loss. I have this feeling like there is something under my right rib cage as if something is stuck underneath or enlarged. At first I thought I had strained a muscle b/c I had been working out in the yard the day before it started. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like there is something there that shouldn't be but when I touch the area there is no swelling or bulge. After about 3-4 weeks when it wasn't going away I went to see my doctor. They did blood work, urine labs and sent me for an ultrasound of gallbladder, all came back normal. I have no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. just this feeling like something is there. It seemed to go away on it's own and then came back and has come and gone since sometimes lasting a few days, sometimes a few weeks. When it is back wearing a bra is uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a warmth or burning sensation in the area. The only other symptoms I have had that I think are related are these: A few months before this started I experienced a fluttering sensation, almost like when I was pregnant and the baby moved, in the same location, a couple of times. Since this has started, on 3 or 4 different occasions, I have experienced a charlie horse like spasm in the same area, below the right rib, when bending over from a sitting position. Does anyone have any answers as to what this might be?  Does it sound like IBS? Peptic Ulcer? Hiatal Hernia?

Has anyone noticed if the pain happens when you need to have a BM or are constipated?

My symptoms for slipped rib syndrome were worse when I was constipated. you can try Oxy Cleanse for the constipation.

I had the same symptoms and was diagnosed with slipped rib syndrome. After trying PT, injections, chiropractic care, etc....I recently had surgery to remove the slipped ribs. When they went in they found that two ribs were knocking against each other on my right side and another one was loose on the left side. They removed all three. It was difficult to find a surgeon familiar with slipped rib syndrome. In the end, I ended up having it done by a plastic surgeon, but, it mainly covered by insurance.

Try going to a thoracic specialist, rib specialist, or chiropractor, and having them check for slipped rib syndrome. My chiropractor was great. She figured out the exact ribs that were slipped - the pain points were actually on my sides and the inflammation was in the front causing the feeling of a baby's foot under my rib cage.

I have the same exact symptoms. It's been off and on for over a year? being treated for muscle spasms but not gong away ... it's like there's a balloon or something under my right ribcage and the moment if I twist the wrong way, it feels like whatever it is , is being pinched and causes severe spasm.. and funny thing is , the worse time I feel it is when showering and drying myself off.. the pain just stabs me like a knife. and yes the feeling is the same as having a baby pressing against your side, and for the first time since experiencing this, I am unable the sleep on my right side

For the first time in a long time I can wear a bra comfortably again and that feeling of something under my rib cage is gone.

if it's any help I have had this exactly for 3 years. I have since been diagnosed with a fatty liver. (inflammation) and because of this the liver pushes against other organs/nerves etc causing the balloon like feeling. my doctor says eating healthy, cut the alcohol and lose some weight will relieve this, but do I do as I am told, no. so I am still suffering. I have joined a reversing fatty liver group on Facebook and it's amazing the people suffering the same, but they give good advice on what to eat. also I find a hot water bottle helps ease it. Hope this helps. xx

hello all, I have suffered from pain in my right upper abdomen for over 7 years. its like a stabbing pain then an ache that moves round my side into my back. Over the years the length of time this pain lasts has got longer and now it moves onto severe indigestion with a pain in the centre of my abdomen and reflux. I've had three ultrasounds, several blood tests and two poop tests checking for hpylori bacteria. All have been clear/normal. This week i was suffering with very bad pains and a burning in the centre of my abdomen so went to gp who then sent me to hospital. My temperature and blood pressure was high but again bloods were normal. After a few hours i was sent home, told to take omeprazole every day (double dose) and pain relief as needed. Consultant suggested gastritis but i'm awaiting an endoscopy to confirm. pains and refux have continued and i feel like im losing my mind. Can't stop worrying its something serious thats been missed or yet to be found... feel so miserable.

      Hi Suzanne,

Have they done a Hydascan to determine if its your gallbladder?

Also, the severe pain in the middle of your chest could be esophageal spasms. I get the spasms every once in a while and they can mimic a heart attack.

I recently had surgery for slipped rib syndrome. I was diagnosed by a pain specialist who specialized in ribs and a chiropractor. you could also go to a thoracic specialist. It is rare and does not show in many tests, but, sometimes can be seen in ultrasounds. I tried injections, PT, -and chiropractor care. My chiropractor basically found the exact ribs that were slipped through her exam. When they went in they found the two slipped ribs on my right side that were hitting against one another which they removed and one slipped rib on my left side which they partially removed. I am still recuperating, but, already, that pressure under my right rib cage is gone.

thanks for your reply. no, no one has ever mentioned that kind of scan to me. think when they see a clear ultrasound they are happy its not my gallbladder... a spasm could probably describe the pain... that and it feels like someones pushing a hot stick in between the bottom of my ribs! 😦

I realize that this is a very old discussion, but I am wondering if anyone has anything new to add? This is the first place where I have found anyone experiencing the same thing. Mine has been on and off for a couple of years, but has been nearly continuous for a few months now. Same description as others… Hard to describe, but feels like something is stuck there. I also thought about the babies foot in the rib description as well. Does not hurt. Just feels weird. And it’s not all the time either! Would love some answers!
