Pain/discomfort under right rib cage.

I have been experiencing this for the last few months, I have been searching the web looking for answers. I am a 45 year old female, in good health, I take no medications, thin, active, I eat healthy, so I am at a loss. I have this feeling like there is something under my right rib cage as if something is stuck underneath or enlarged. At first I thought I had strained a muscle b/c I had been working out in the yard the day before it started. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like there is something there that shouldn't be but when I touch the area there is no swelling or bulge. After about 3-4 weeks when it wasn't going away I went to see my doctor. They did blood work, urine labs and sent me for an ultrasound of gallbladder, all came back normal. I have no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. just this feeling like something is there. It seemed to go away on it's own and then came back and has come and gone since sometimes lasting a few days, sometimes a few weeks. When it is back wearing a bra is uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a warmth or burning sensation in the area. The only other symptoms I have had that I think are related are these: A few months before this started I experienced a fluttering sensation, almost like when I was pregnant and the baby moved, in the same location, a couple of times. Since this has started, on 3 or 4 different occasions, I have experienced a charlie horse like spasm in the same area, below the right rib, when bending over from a sitting position. Does anyone have any answers as to what this might be? Does it sound like IBS? Peptic Ulcer? Hiatal Hernia?

I had my gall bladder removed over 15 years ago, then recently had internal and external shingles. After, I had a ligament compressing an artery to my stomach (MALS) which I had surgery for, but, still was having similar problems, inflamation and swelling under my right rib cage, the feeling of pressure - almost like a baby was pushing my rib cage with their foot, for over two years. They finally figured out after many clear scans, tests, etc...that it was my actual ribs - I had Slipped Rib Syndrome. I recently had three slipped ribs partially removed. Two were hitting/ knocking against each other. While they were doing the rib surgery, they also found and repaired two hernias. I'm still recovering, but, the feeling of something moving behind my ribs and the pressure is gone. I have been wearing a compression garment since the surgery, which has helped with stabilizing my ribs immensely. Right now, I am trying to strengthen the muscles around my ribs in physical therapy to prevent further problems. the goal is to eventually have the muscles around my rib cage doing the job the compression garment is now doing. I also have non alcohol related fatty liver as I do not drink at all. This causes my liver to swell and enlarge - which can make the right side of my stomach to be swollen. I have found that with diet and exercise, I can get that swelling down. It is definitely worse if I eat fatty or sugary foods or lots of carbs.

Could you share with us what doctor you went to who found the slipped rib syndrome? If he's not too far away, some of us may want to have a consult with him. Any information is much appreciated. Thanks, Cindi

I know this is an old post but see that some people have posted in the last month or two. I have had the same issues also other than feeling a bulge under the rib. Mine is more like a fullness like something is pushing out on my rib on the right side, but when I feel with my hand there's nothing there. I've had pain under the rib and sternum, frequent belching throughout the day, even before I've eaten or drank anything, sharp pains like gas under the right rib that comes and goes and feels like gas pain, shoulder pain and pain between my shoulder blades to the right of my spine, and a bitter taste in my mouth that comes and goes. I know my gallbladder is low functioning at 34% but my HIDA scan was 4 years ago so it could be worse now.
I called to get into a surgeon but he wants me to rule out h pylori or anything else before he even considers removing it so I have an appointment to see a gastroenterologist on November 21. Just looking to see if anyone ever got anymore answers.

I still have my issue. I have a feeling of something there but like yourself I don't feel anything when I press down. I do have belching more than normal too. I do not have at any time other than when I move just right (and it does not gave to be any big moves either). As I mentioned in a previous post, a hernia belt or even an elastic back brace will give me support and I do wear it if driving or away from home, however I did have an episode as a passenger wearing the belt. My husband had to pull over and after I rubbed it out, took 3 tries to be able to get back in the car. Whatever this is, it seems to be positional. I have health insurance issues at the moment, but working on that so that I can get this looked into. I will post the findings when I'm able, but please post an update when you get one. Good luck to you!

I meant to say, I do not have PAIN at any time, other than when I am having an "episode." It feels like a charley horse type of pain. I have also been using a TENS unit...don't really know if it helps or not...i kinda think it does.

Oh my gosh same thing for me... the horrible charlie horse that makes me have to lean back and wait for it to go away. It's happened in the bath tub, car, tying my shoes. Anytime I have to scrunch up. Had my gal bladder checked and everything is fine. I also get pain between my shoulder blades leaning more towards the right shoulder.

This may be coincidental, but 2 yrs ago I had a shingles outbreak without the rash. Lasted about 2 months, but the one area that continued to have a deep itch and painfulness from shingles long, long after most of it cleared up is right where the twisting charley horse pain seems to be that I have now.. I am wondering now if I had an internal shingles outbreak and there is scar tissue from that relating to my present woes. I put this out there in case someone can relate...if not to shingles, maybe some other surgery or something that may have caused scar tissue. Just not sure why in my case its taken 2 yrs to manifest.

I too wonder about scar tissues - adhesions. I've had gallbladder removed several years ago and also full hysterectomy for 5lbs fibroid. I see a osteopath and she says lots of scaring in there.

Try taking some other internal organs viewing diagnostic methods like MRI or CT. That would help in actually what is present under your ribs. This will provide you a great understanding of your problem. As both these techniques will provide better quality images compared to the ultrasound technique. Also have a check over cancer diagnostic procedures.

Hi all,
I am experiencing exactly what you are describing and have done since early December. (I have also been suffering with dizziness and fatigue, not sure if this is related or not).
I find my symptoms are always worse after eating or sitting especially in a car for long periods. Even now typing this I can feel a full and fluttering feeling just below my right ribcage.
I saw my GP this morning who says she thinks its IBS related to some anxiety I have been dealing with lately. She has ordered me a Ultrasound Scan on the area for now.

no never got it resolved, but still get symptoms occasionally... I do now suffer with IBS and GERD though so could be related to that
