Pain/discomfort under right rib cage.

I have been experiencing this for the last few months, I have been searching the web looking for answers.  I am a 45 year old female, in good health, I take no medications, thin, active, I eat healthy, so I am at a loss. I have this feeling like there is something under my right rib cage as if something is stuck underneath or enlarged. At first I thought I had strained a muscle b/c I had been working out in the yard the day before it started. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like there is something there that shouldn't be but when I touch the area there is no swelling or bulge. After about 3-4 weeks when it wasn't going away I went to see my doctor. They did blood work, urine labs and sent me for an ultrasound of gallbladder, all came back normal. I have no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. just this feeling like something is there. It seemed to go away on it's own and then came back and has come and gone since sometimes lasting a few days, sometimes a few weeks. When it is back wearing a bra is uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a warmth or burning sensation in the area. The only other symptoms I have had that I think are related are these: A few months before this started I experienced a fluttering sensation, almost like when I was pregnant and the baby moved, in the same location, a couple of times. Since this has started, on 3 or 4 different occasions, I have experienced a charlie horse like spasm in the same area, below the right rib, when bending over from a sitting position. Does anyone have any answers as to what this might be?  Does it sound like IBS? Peptic Ulcer? Hiatal Hernia?

Hi Kit4410 I am new to this forum but I only signed up because I read your post on Google search. I have been experiencing the same symptoms as you have for a few months now. I would say from around April /May. It went away or faded should I say but has flared up again this past couple of weeks. It feels like a clicking/popping under the right side of my rib cage when I move a particular way and when I turn over or sit up in bed. It's driving me nuts and now I feel worried about it. In September it flared up and I woke up one morning and it felt like I had pulled a muscle there. It was quite sore to touch but nothing was visible but it was literally gone the next day. Its so baffling. Did you get any answers?

Wow, I get this also. Very annoying. It seems like a bulge or bubble there but not. Just an uncomfortable annoying feeling.

Mine goes away and comes back now and then. I did have some indigestion early. Never put the Two together. I will have to pay attention when this occurs I wish it would just go away.

It is more annoying when sitting. I just try to sit up as straight as possible.

I am pretty positive it is always under the right rib only. Wondering if Motrin would help if it is like an inflammation or something. IDK.

Very curious to see if anyone has an update. I cannot really go to GI doctor right now.

i have been experiencing this odd pressure sensation believe my right ribcage, sometimes at the centre too. It feels like there's a growth there. I explained to my husband, it's almost like I'm pregnant, where my organs get pushed up. it is especially worse after I have eaten out sat for a long period of time.

I've not lost weight, nor do I feel nauseated. I am fatigued but I'm not sure if they're related. wearing a bra is just so uncomfortable as it digs into the very place I feel the discomfort. And I've got no choice but to wear a bra (sports bra) as I have developed sharp chest pains too.

I have a phone appointment next week and I'm really hoping that she will look into it further as those is going to end up being my 4th related phonecall in two months.

it's so depressing and I am cranky all the time and it's not good for my husband and my young children 😔

Hi, this is exactly what I'm going through. I've been having this discomfort in my upper right and centre below my ribs which almost feels like a dull ache or pressure. I've changed quite a few physicians and most of them just put me on a PPI but it doesn't help. I do get heartburn sometimes but nothing too serious. The ache is more uncomfortable than painful and I have no idea what to do to make it go away.

If you find any answers, please share here!!!

I've been experiencing the same thing since the middle of August. feels like something is stuck under my right ribcage. not painful, just uncomfortable. Had bloodwork, an ultrasound, a colonoscopy, an endoscopy, a HIDA scan. I'm so annoyed and just want this mystery solved.

I've been also feeling that at least two months until now I did two check ups(ultrasound) the results are pretty fine and all normal. I don't know what is the cause of this please post update on this thread.

i have had the same since early September so 3 months now. labs all normal, abdominal CT normal. its much better than it was when it started, it was so uncomfortable sitting down i had to unbutton my pants. Wearing bra made it worse as does constipation. i am a nurse and have tried everything i can think of. i think it did begin improving when i started using a heating pad to my right upper abdomen in the evenings. i also switched to a soft, wireless bra. the most relief is probably from the Neurontin they placed me on. i can tell a difference if i don't take it. It unfortunately seems to be something I just have to live with. Will be watching this thread in case anyone comes up with any new information

Hi there, I have been experiencing similar symptoms this past year. In October 2019 my left lung spontaneously collapsed for no apparent reason. I am 34 year old, slim, active female. I've had no previous issues at all with my lungs. I am a singer and therefore thought they were pretty strong! April last year it collapsed again and I had and operation in June to stop it happening again. My surgeon briefly mentioned the words 'Catamenial pneumothorax' when I came around from surgery but wasn't convinced this was what I had. I looked into this. It means some women experience collapsed lungs connected to their periods. Sounds weird I know!

This is linked to endometriosis, which I have never thought I have as I have never had symptoms of this at all. Anyway, some endo tissue can attach to your diaphragm and cause small holes, which can then lead to a pneumothorax, which is often so small it goes away on its own.

I started monitoring when I was experiencing pain...and sure enough...4 days after the start of my period I experience a sort of 'pressure' like feeling under my ribs. And odd 'movement' feelings on both sides. This has recently been developing into a sharp almost 'stitch' like pain under my right ribs which scares me as it feels like when I had the full collapse of the left lung back in 2019.

I mentioned all this to my thoracic surgeon and he said to ask my GP to refer me to a Gynecologist to try and determine if I do in fact have Catamenial pneumothorax.

It is apparently very rare, but I don't believe it is. I have seen many women around my age describing symptoms similar, only the GPs often have never heard of it!

Try asking your GP, it's worth a shot. I had many xrays and an ultrasound but sadly they do not pick up endo tissue so weren't any help. I am currently trialling the combined Pill to see if it helps with the symptoms. Good luck!

Ive been dealing with the same issues for the past 2 yrs or so now. Im 40 ish.I was in shower shaving my legs but bent over a awkward way and all of a sudden i feel this knot like thing and i try to stand and i can literally feel this lump. Im freaking out by the time i hot dried of. The aftermath of the feeling goin away feels like the area should be bruised tomorrow...Decided to finally look my symptoms up and this is where i ended up. .I was told it was fatty tissue. Its a weird feeling. I explain it like when ur prego and feel ur baby move but like that lump is stuck..,. So im curious is what is going on with everyone elses issues... hope everyone had a good new years!!

It sounds like built up fluid of some sorts. Try massaging the area consistently.

I have had severe pain that comes & goes on both rib cages .

when you touch your ribs do you feel little lumps ? mine are bubble like & i want to pop them ( I wouldnt ) . I have a spot on my liver also but know one has made a big deal of it .

I have a hiatal hernia ,gastropersis, I also have a total pelvic prolapse .

when i felt the bubble like things on my ribs i asked for a mamo

I was told i have dense breast tissue and would need a mamo every 6 months .

Im not sure if the feeling you have is the same but its exteremly painful & comes and goes . I cant wear a bra it takes my breathe away ..

I really feel like all drs have given up on me .

Im still young in my early 50s im in good shape if anything i need to gain a few pounds due to gastropersis .

I hope someone finds an answer ..

Well, I can't speak for exactly what this is for you, but I can tell you what my experience has been for me. I have the exact thing you described (minus the flutters)...but on my left under my ribcage...had it for years. It, also, comes and goes, as well as, has a change in intensity. Years ago, I had a colonoscopy and was diagnosed with IBS and having Splenic Flexure Syndrome. On your right side, it would be the Hepatic Flexure. It's possible, this may be your issue, as well. Definitely keep following up with your physician until you get some answers.
