Pain/discomfort under right rib cage.

I have been experiencing this for the last few months, I have been searching the web looking for answers.  I am a 45 year old female, in good health, I take no medications, thin, active, I eat healthy, so I am at a loss. I have this feeling like there is something under my right rib cage as if something is stuck underneath or enlarged. At first I thought I had strained a muscle b/c I had been working out in the yard the day before it started. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like there is something there that shouldn't be but when I touch the area there is no swelling or bulge. After about 3-4 weeks when it wasn't going away I went to see my doctor. They did blood work, urine labs and sent me for an ultrasound of gallbladder, all came back normal. I have no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. just this feeling like something is there. It seemed to go away on it's own and then came back and has come and gone since sometimes lasting a few days, sometimes a few weeks. When it is back wearing a bra is uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a warmth or burning sensation in the area. The only other symptoms I have had that I think are related are these: A few months before this started I experienced a fluttering sensation, almost like when I was pregnant and the baby moved, in the same location, a couple of times. Since this has started, on 3 or 4 different occasions, I have experienced a charlie horse like spasm in the same area, below the right rib, when bending over from a sitting position. Does anyone have any answers as to what this might be?  Does it sound like IBS? Peptic Ulcer? Hiatal Hernia?

can't say what's happening to you, but this is my story:

I had a similar discomfort several years ago which my GP put down to gallstones. I had a scan which found nothing and by that time the pain had gone so the Dr assumed I'd passed the stone.

A few years later, the tightness and spasms in my abdomen under my ribcage returned followed by loss of sensation in the leg at the same side. I was referred to a neurologist and was quickly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis after a brain and spine MRI. The neurologist said the tight spasming feeling in my abdomen was called the MS hug which was caused by inflammation in the spinal cord. It isn't always present, it comes and goes as it pleases.

i too have MS and this is only on my one side. My right side below my rib. It also is tender when I touch it. It feels like it’s either my liver and my kidneys when I press on it it is really sore. I also feel sometimes around my back at the lower portion of my right rib I can feel it tender there. I’ve had to take this before due to my MS and it feels like it’s more across my whole chest and not just this pain under my right rib.

hi there i'm new to the thread. i'm a 44 yr old male and have been enduring these exact same symptoms for over ten yrs and have had every test you can think of and still nothing. No doctor or consultant has been able to identify the issue. I read on another thread that this condition was caused by a collapsed rib which then pinches a nerve. if i dig my fingers into my ribs in that area the discomfort goes away immediately. It feels like a good punch in the ribs would actually relieve my discomfort altogether.

Ditto! Why is it that physicians have no idea WHAT IS WRONG!! I have been on Lynzess & Amitiza, several Ultrasounds, CT scans W/wo contrast, & 2 colonoscpys. Dr is ordering a endoscopy . The CONSTANT pressure, swelling and depression has to stop!

I am currently experiencing very similar symptoms. I also throw up mucus. Have you tried an endoscopy? I have one coming up in February. My lipase umbers were high for my pancreas as well you should have them check bloodwork for your lipase. my liver was a little elivated in numbers too.

I'm curious if anyone has determined anything.

I started having this 'lump' under my right rib in March of 2020. 3 MRI's, 2 CT scans and 2 Ultra sounds later and they have found nothing. Yes, there are gallstones, but I've had those for years. I also have a VERY rare liver disease that is unchanged in 7 years. I came across and article about rib cartilage pain, but nothing seems to really fit this. There is literally nothing underneath this but my lung! Mine seems to hug closely to the lower right rib, up under the breast, but under the rib. It feels like a lump most of the time, but you can't palpate a lump. It's not painful most of the time, just noticeable. It too bothers me a lot when I drive or when I'm sitting. And it's more noticeable at night than in the morning.

I think! I think it's the gallbladder. I think that it's NOT the standard doubled over in pain issue, but a nagging 'I'm full, inflamed, and tired' gallbladder issue. I really don't know. The constant pressure and discomfort is always there. This whole thing came on very sudden for me. So, anyone out there who has actually figured out what it is - please speak up! Thank you all!!! Any I wish and pray knowledge and relief to all of us.

I have this exact issue, it's been almost 2 years now. Dull ache and feeling of something under right rib, worse when bra digging in, some days really bad, and some much less. Also get nausea and indigestion with a feeling like I need to clear my throat constantly. Been for ultrasound, MRI, bloods the lot and they can't find anything, have said may be acid reflux was given Esomeprazole to take which helped slightly but never did get rid of it in the long term made me worse so I stopped them. At wits end, never a day when I feel totally well, does hernia cause this painful ache!?!

    Hello Everyone!

My name is Leo and I have been having the same issues under my right rib. Got ultrasound and everything checked out good. Doctor even told me it could be in my head. Not much of pain, however the discomfort is annoying; bad. I do feel more discomfort when I sit for long periods of time. I do have the feeling starting from on bottom of sternum all the way to the bottom of right rib. feeling does vary from from days. I feel alot of activity such as burping or growls coming from right side.

Please...... if anyone can help... it's been a year with the same discomfort.. I do feel exercising does help...

I will join the crowd. In July of 2020 I started experiencing a dull cramp like sensation in my right side under my ribs. Have been back and forth to the doctor many times and just got ultrasound results (all Normal). I have a HIDA scan coming up to check for my gallbladder function and then an Upper Endoscopy as well.

Not going to be fun lol

My doctor said if we don't find anything it could be musculoskeletal in nature and I may need physical therapy.

After reading everyone elses issue the Slipped Rib seems to really get me thinking as it hurts most when im laying on my right side or when I bend over. When I got an ultrasound it really hurt when she had the wand pushing upwards on my ribs looking up at my liver. I also noticed this pain happening the day I sat scrunched up on the couch playing Nintentdo Switch for 5+ hours. I wonder if all those hours sitting like that injured myself! When I got up I had a terrible tightness but it eventually subsided after I shook it off . However, when I went to bed that night I noticed a sensation that felt like "something" was stuck under my ribs.

Just an update on my problems.

My HIDA scan came back abnormal. I have an 8% ejection fraction and the normal range is >38% . However, I had no pain with the HIDA scan as I was laying on my back and the pain primarily occurs when laying on my side (if I am laying down).

My EDG came back with mild chronic lower gastritis. I am now taking Pantoprozole twice daily for 3 months while avoiding alcholol and NSAIDs. The doctor can not be certain what is causing my pain but he wants me to heal my gastritis and see if it helps.

He said I could consider removing my gallbladder but he is not certain it would help because my pain was not occurring during the HIDA scan when stimulating the gall bladder.

Everyone should read up on "Slipping Rib" Syndrome to see if that could be it. Apparently, this condition leads to 5% of all visits to Gastroenterology. Here is one case study and boy does it sound exactly like what I am experiencing:

I'm in the same boat. My gallbladder showed up barely functioning under Hida Scan but I find no correlation with eating fatty foods. The discomfort is very position-based. I feel it the most when I'm driving and that part of the back of my ribs is leaning against the seat. It almost feels like an itch sometimes. If I lay on my left side, I feel it the most when I pull my right leg in towards my torso. It's as if the organs are pushing against each other or my ribs are interfering with each other. It does feel like it could be a rib issue. My endoscopy just showed up mild esophagus inflammation. Let me know if you figure it out because it's driving me insane.

i too had all those tests including CT scan and nothing showed . The pain is there and it is real. Only on right side . The ultrasound hurt when it was doing my Liver and Kidneys . The tech said my kidney was close to the surface too. Hopefully someone will have an answer for all of us one day
