Pain/discomfort under right rib cage.

I have been experiencing this for the last few months, I have been searching the web looking for answers.  I am a 45 year old female, in good health, I take no medications, thin, active, I eat healthy, so I am at a loss. I have this feeling like there is something under my right rib cage as if something is stuck underneath or enlarged. At first I thought I had strained a muscle b/c I had been working out in the yard the day before it started. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like there is something there that shouldn't be but when I touch the area there is no swelling or bulge. After about 3-4 weeks when it wasn't going away I went to see my doctor. They did blood work, urine labs and sent me for an ultrasound of gallbladder, all came back normal. I have no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. just this feeling like something is there. It seemed to go away on it's own and then came back and has come and gone since sometimes lasting a few days, sometimes a few weeks. When it is back wearing a bra is uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a warmth or burning sensation in the area. The only other symptoms I have had that I think are related are these: A few months before this started I experienced a fluttering sensation, almost like when I was pregnant and the baby moved, in the same location, a couple of times. Since this has started, on 3 or 4 different occasions, I have experienced a charlie horse like spasm in the same area, below the right rib, when bending over from a sitting position. Does anyone have any answers as to what this might be?  Does it sound like IBS? Peptic Ulcer? Hiatal Hernia?

After reading through all of these replies I'm glad to know I'm not alone but want to get to the bottom of this since it has been driving me nuts! Back in March I was laying down and started to feel a pressure sensation at the bottom of my right rib cage. The pressure sensation feels like it is under my floating ribs & I actually discovered a very tiny movable lump in the same spot that I'm almost positive is causing that sensation. Last February I did injure myself when I was joking around and kicked my leg up without stretching (ridiculous I know) but I'm not sure if this is connected. I was diagnosed with Piriformis Syndrome along with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction but it is interesting to me that this lump randomly appeared after I injured myself and is on the same side that I injured myself. My physical therapist felt the area and could not feel the lump I was talking about so she said it doesn't seem too concerning but to follow up with my GP if it still bothers me which is my next step. Prior to finding this lump I also had a CT Urogram that showed no abnormalities, my blood work was all normal, and I also had pelvic ultrasounds done that came back normal so I don't think it is anything life threatening or else my results would have showed something was off. Around the same time I also started getting acid reflux which I saw others mentioning and I never had this before. If I sit in one position for too long or touch the lump the pressure sensation feels worse and so uncomfortable but it goes away again after a little bit until something aggravates it again. When I looked it up it sounds like a lipoma on my floating rib since it moves when I touch it but you can't see it on my skin, you only can feel it if you press on the area. Has anyone else had a similar situation? I have IBS also but never have had acid reflux in the past or this sensation under my lower right ribs until a few months ago so I don't think its that.

wow so glad I found this thread! I also have been suffering exactly the same as this but also get abdominal pain and back ache. It started after my 1st child 7 years ago. I also suffer with IBS. I have been adamant for years it has been an ulcer but kept putting off getting it checked. This last month the pain in my back and sciatica along with this rib pain I can't cope any longer. I have lost over a stone in a month as I constantly feel nauseous because of it. especially every so often I can this sudden twinge that only last a second but it knocks me bad. I'm at docs tomorrow for my bloods again not had them done since last child nearly 2 year ago and hopefully referred for a scan to see if they can see anything.

It appears that I can be added to the list of people suffering from the same symptoms. Mine started March 2020, but I had a couple of UTIs early January, which weren't typical of UTI symptoms. That aside, I started to get the right side rib pain (mainly mid rib at the bottom). Trying to see the doc was impossible as lockdown #1 started. I was referred to a gynae to check for endometriosis, but after MRI, ultrasound, smear test, biopsy, bloods, etc. nothing concerning was noted. I was asked to wait a couple of months and see if the pain went away, which it did from August - October. It returned a bit more severely with more episodes of a twisting, knotting and 'stitch' type pain. I went privately and was referred to a gastro doc who did a h.pylori test. The test returned as normal and I had another ultrasound to check gallstones, liver, spleen and there were no issues. The gastro doc gave me a prescription for esomeprazole for 2 weeks which eased the pain significantly, but it gradually returned by the end of the second week. He ruled out any gastro issues and said the esomeprazole created a placebo effect (!) and left me with a prescription for Amitriptyline (for pain), which I haven't used yet as it's supposed to knock you out and with a young child at home during lockdown, I cannot be that way. He implied that I was overly anxious about the pain and that it could be costocondritis as the pain runs along the bottom of the rib (cartilidge) and it could be inflammed. I told him clearly that I wasn't manifesting the pain! He back tracked a bit and quickly referred me to a rheumatologist who requested an Isotope scan (nuclear bone scan) to rule out 'sinister pathology'. I am waiting results on this for the past week, so hope to hear back soon.

I have the same issues that when I'm sitting forward or bending, it's very uncomfortable. I am fine lying on my back and left side and standing/walking is fine. I can lie on the right side (which is my natural sleeping position), but it can wake me with a dull ache - feeling like it's bruised. I see a chiropractor, which is helpful anyway as it loosens my back up, but not sure if it is reducing the discomfort at the front lower rib area.

I have added a few supplements to my daily routine in the past week, which seems to have reduced the discomfort a bit - although this could be a placebo effect? The supplements I am taking are:

    Milk thistle

    Zinc

    Liquorice (20 mins before eating)

    Gloucosamine

    Peppermint tea

I do not have any other symptoms other than the rib pain. Bowel movements are regular and normal, no bleeding, no nausea. My neck and shoulder can feel tight at times, but the chiropractor sorts that out as it could be to do with posturing due to the discomfort in the rib. Since I saw the gynae, all the docs have been steering towards a musculoskeletal issue, but I feel there's something inside inflamed, but as I've never had a pulled muscle, pinched nerve in that area before, I could be wrong. The pain is so hard to describe at times and I feel I might be at fault when I'm trying to describe it to the doctors. There is tightness, a golf ball feeling under the ribs, but no fluttering or charley horse. It sometimes presents directly on the opposite side in my back and then suddenly back at my front side rib. I feel it's mainly on the front and side more than the back. I have no other illnesses and I am not on any medication. The only thing the gynae discovered was a mild case of adenomyosis, but I don't have any of the typical symptoms and it is quite common in many women. I am 49 but not menopausal (as far as I know). It is comforting to know that I am not alone with this and that others have similar issues. I am hoping to find some suggestions on this thread as I am not getting answers from the medical professionals. Pain is about 2/10 for the past week, but at it's worst, it has gone to 8/10, which has a huge impact on daily life. I will update if I find out more on what this could be and I will keep an eye on this thread for updates. Thanks everyone for sharing!

this is so amazing with the amount of people that have similar symptoms nothing has been diagnosed and fixed and we were all going to so many different specialists. I too have seen so many and had so many scans and nothing to report . This is very stressful to say the least and hopefully someone will eventually get a report up here let me get some of this diagnosis. I hope you’re doing OK wish you well

I feel like im experiencing something similar. I dont have an answer for you but just know youre not the only one experiencing this type of pain. My baby is 5 months old. I delivered by cesearean. During delivery and while recovering in the hospital everything was fine. It wasn’t until day 5, that I woke up in the middle of the night with severe pain in my upper right side (rib area.) It eventually spread to my upper back. I went back to sleep and woke up in the morning still in pain. I’m not one to complain about pain.. I think I can tolerate it very well but this pain got worse throughout the day and I just couldn’t take it anymore. It was excruciating. I could barely breathe, every cough, burp, sneeze, laugh, or movement I made sent a sharp shooting pain on my right side and through my upper back. Every bump we hit in the car ride sent me crying my eyes out too. I contacted my dr and he suggested I go to the er because it didn’t sound normal being I was 5 days postpartum. I went to the ER and while I was there I caught a one time fever of 102. They admitted me because they said having a fever right after giving birth wasn’t a good thing. They gave me morphine and tramadol and nothing helped ease the pain. They ran all kinds of tests, including ultrasounds and 2 CT scans. Everything came back normal. They said they saw some scar tissue on my liver (didn’t know where that was from) but that it wasn’t concerning. I was there from Tuesday until Friday and I came home with no answers. I had a follow up with my OB and he said if the pain is getting better that’s a good sign and sent me on my way. Fast forward to today, it has gotten better however... when I stretch or do strenuous activity it starts bothering me again (not nearly as bad but it feels like something is sore.) Anyone experience something similar or have any ideas as to what’s wrong with me?

hello i too am so glad I found this. i've had the same uncomfortable feeling under my right rib for at least a year. at first I too thought it was from a muscle strain from exercise but it didn't go away. most of the time the pain is dull when i sit down but there are some times where I felt contractions. Even stranger is when you touch the area slightly, the skin is very painful. It is not painful when you press down, just when you slightly touch the area. I have been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia for many years. I recently had many tests done but all of my organs seem to be fine. My doctor now has me on a medicine to alleviate any inflammation in my intestines, but it really does not seem to be helping. any other information from anyone else will certainly be helpful!

I am so happy to have found this thread. I am 50 and I am experiencing the same symptoms like so many of you. I have terrible discomfort in epigastric region, especially under the rib cage. I have frequent bloating, excessive gas and belching, sloshing and gurgling sounds. Also feel something poking me in the right rib at times. Unable to wear a bra as the nauseousness becomes unbareable. Have bouts of constipation as well. Unable to sit for any length of time and have to tilt my chair back when in a car. I do not take any long drives.

After reading the thread, I am wondering more about hiatal hernia being the cause of my upper stomach issue. I have been off work for a couple months, unable to sit at desk and the constant standing with feeling of heaviness was making me exhausted. I need to get back to normal.

I began visiting the doctor in Dec 2019. I have had CT scan, ultrasounds (Pelvic and TV), X Rays, blood work, MRI, GI specialist phone call, Gynocologist call and still no results. I am told everything looks fine. MRI determined multiple small nobothian cysts, endometrial thickness is 5.9mm, left ovary 2cm simple cyst, right ovary demonstrates multiple follicles, the largest is 1.2cm and moderate free pelvic fluid. I have also had gluten free and celiac ruled out, and I have taken pinaverium to rule out gallbladder bile duct issue, as well as a stomach acid pill. Also tried keifer, enzyme pill, metamucil tablets, senecot S, tumeric and now apple cidar vinegar. No improvement with anything, still bloating, pressure and abdomen discomfort.

Would love to hear from others who have experienced the same symptoms and hear about any success you've had getting over this issue.

I came here to look for something else and saw this thread. Not suggesting this is the answer for all of you but what many of you describe sounds like intercostal (between the ribs) muscle spasm which I get - google it - if its a sharp pain and hard to take a full breath in and then sometimes will 'pop' out by stretching the area although lately I have to completely relax the area and it eventually releases.

I am having the same issue, started after a pick up game went wrong. I was under cut and following that fall, I started to have pain that mimicked gallbladder pain. I have had 2 ultrasounds that show gallstones and HIDA scan. I was at 36% at that time 4 years ago, Fast forward to now, moving into a new house doing a lot of the lifting myself and the nagging pressure and pain is back. My wife is a nurse so I started to telling her how everyone here had same thing and I wasn't crazy after all. So I hope what I say now will help some of us as I believe I may have discovered some issues that might pertain to some of us. There is a condition called Diastasis Recti and within this condition you can get what they refer too as the rib flare. I would always explain that I could pin point my pain in my rib area best when I put my hand above my head. It felt like the rib would sit on top of a muscle/organ and when I lowered my arm I could adjust that area to make the discomfort go away. I am not a doctor and have an appt for this Thursday. I am hoping that I am on to something that will allow some of us to go to a doctor to put a name to the pain. There are exercises for this condition and I will find out more Thursday. I found this out by accident, I was laying down and saw the bulge in my stomach from belly button to sternum and knew something wasn't right there. I hope to have more info Thursday if anyone is interested

Hey Eddie, I am new to this forum. I too am having this pain/pressure everyone is describing. I have had it for about 2 months and as everyone all the tests come back normal. One thing I found interesting about your post is that I do have Diastasis Recti. I am a 53 year old male and was first diagnosed with Diastasis Recti 2 years ago. I am interested to hear what your doctor has to say.

While I find comfort in knowing that there are others out there with the same issue, I find it a little concerning that in three years no one has come up with a prognosis and/or solution. Trying to keep hopeful though
