Pain/discomfort under right rib cage.

I have been experiencing this for the last few months, I have been searching the web looking for answers. I am a 45 year old female, in good health, I take no medications, thin, active, I eat healthy, so I am at a loss. I have this feeling like there is something under my right rib cage as if something is stuck underneath or enlarged. At first I thought I had strained a muscle b/c I had been working out in the yard the day before it started. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like there is something there that shouldn't be but when I touch the area there is no swelling or bulge. After about 3-4 weeks when it wasn't going away I went to see my doctor. They did blood work, urine labs and sent me for an ultrasound of gallbladder, all came back normal. I have no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. just this feeling like something is there. It seemed to go away on it's own and then came back and has come and gone since sometimes lasting a few days, sometimes a few weeks. When it is back wearing a bra is uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a warmth or burning sensation in the area. The only other symptoms I have had that I think are related are these: A few months before this started I experienced a fluttering sensation, almost like when I was pregnant and the baby moved, in the same location, a couple of times. Since this has started, on 3 or 4 different occasions, I have experienced a charlie horse like spasm in the same area, below the right rib, when bending over from a sitting position. Does anyone have any answers as to what this might be? Does it sound like IBS? Peptic Ulcer? Hiatal Hernia?

I have been experiencing the same sensation on my right side under my ribcage. I had some nausea and and contracting feeling starting in December. I had a Cat Scan in the ER. Gallbladder looked normal, Liver showed a hemangioma and possible cyst. Then sent for an MRI of Liver. Cyst was confirmed. Then had Ultrasound of my Gallbladder, no gallstones. Had Hida Scan today, technician said Gallbladder looked normal. I still feel like something is under my right rib cage. Bra is uncomfortable, sitting, and riding in a car (sitting). Surgeon said she's going to refer me to a Gastroenterologist. I do have a hiatal hernia. Weird that so many of us have the same symptom.

Hi! I feel like you described exactly what I am going through. Even down to me telling someone it felt like a baby pushing inside. I am seeing a doctor today. Did you ever get a diagnosis?

I'm really glad I found this thread. I have been reluctant to google because I didnt want to freak myself out. But I feel exactly like alot have described- like a pressure on the right side just under my rib, like something is there that isnt supposed to be. I cant feel anything untoward and I dont want to keep prodding at it lol. It is not in anyway painful but I find it annoying, I don't notice it so much when i'm stood up but its very present when I sit down. I have put on weight recently so wondered if it is related to that. I've not been to the GP yet as I find it difficult to describe what exactly it is. It doesnt seem to be going away though so I will go about it. Has anyone found out what exactly it is or how to get rid of it? my plan is to lose some weight in hope that helps!

try getting your lungs checked. I have many lung issues and I get that pain whenever something has irritated them. Feels like your rib is a pulled muscle plus warming/burning sensation, heavy feeling just in that area. Not to terrify anyone but I ended up with a COPD diagnosis, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and asthma.

Had the EXACT symptoms.
Not sure if it's the same for you, of course, but in my case it was a pinched nerve on the back (around t5-t9 vertebrae). For some it can cause different sensations, pain, dysesthesia, muscle twitching, tingling etc.
In my case it was due to anxiety/bad posture(I'm a programmer) which caused lot of chronic muscle tension and in turn created a compression on spine. Of course a compression can happen for many other reasons too (I. E. trauma, disc degeneration) . And yea, apart from a brief period of back pain which I thought was not related, the pression (it was more like a bubble inflating) under my ribs lasted some months. But now I know it's harmless. In some case you could also make it worse with some movement or deep breathing. Try to see if the pressure sensation changes if you put an hand (no pressure, gentle touch) over there while trying to elicit it. This could be a hint that it's nerve related, in my case it stopped the sensation as long as I left my hand over it.

Hi. I am new to this thread. I am a male and to the best of my knowledge have never been pregnant. However, I have also been experiencing these symptoms for some time. Uncomfortable feeling that something is catching the lower part of my right rib cage. Particularly uncomfortable when putting shoes ans socks on. I had an ultrasound months ago but they didn't find anything. no pain and no acid reflux but it is playing heavily on my mind. I am keen to know if anyone has had a successful diagnosis.

Can't believe I found this, I've been searching Google (I know that is the WORST thing to do when there's a problem) but couldn't find anything that sounded like what I've been experiencing until this!
So throughout the day I get occasional mild pain in the area but by the evening I find it feel like this swelling/ pressure under my right rib is so uncomfortable. I have to sit at an angle to reduce the pressure. I feel like I want to remove my lower ribs to stop the digging.
I called my gp but he wasn't interested, said it could be costochondritis which I know it's not and to take ibuprofen. I asked if he thought it could be kidney or liver related and he said definitely not. All this without even seeing me. I will be calling back because it's not getting better but I feel so much better knowing I'm not the only one experiencing this.

i too have this, it is a real concern for me. i have it in the day but especially at night and if im lying down. it starts like pressure as if there is a brick below my right rib which progresses to a sharp pain and sometimes spasms. been to docs had gallbladder scans, apparently clear and now been given lanzoprazol. i just know i will be phoning back up once the course has finished. im fed up with all the worry now. i cant believe i have found this thread. so relieved that it unfortunately seems a common problem. also im not over weight, excercise daily, eat healthy and do not drink alcohol. i have had one child but that was 10 years ago.

After reading through these comments, I have finally found others who have the same symptoms that I've had for over 20 years! I 1st noticed it in Yoga, then when leaning over the bath to wash the kids hair, any invert position really. I explained to the Dr that it felt like an organ had got trapped behind my ribcage and was slowly slipping back down, is excruciating and breathtaking for a few seconds. Like a lot on here I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and put on reflux tablets. Fast forward, after years of pain and being unable to do certain things including exercises, 3 invasive and not very pleasant gastro procedures with a camera, we are still no wiser. About a year ago I had to have my gall bladder removed which I believe now had been the cause of why the Dr thought I had acid reflux! I still have the pain every now and again so it is definitely not related to the gall bladder. I am again researching to try and find a cause to take to my consultant on our next appointment in March and will post any information that I find out.

Did not realize so many had the same symptoms as I do. Have had this come and go over the past 5 years. Just getting over an episode now. I have a hiatal hernia and what relieves my symptoms is taking Prevacid every night to reduce acid along with a Zyrtec for allergies. The constant swallowing because of postnasal drip makes me take in large amounts of air which effects my hernia as well as giving me distension in my stomach and intestines (Sorry for the graphic description) and as the air passes through the intestines, gives you that bloated and the feeling like something is moving through them. When I am experiencing this I have to cut coffee, alcohol, fatty foods and other foods that add excessive gas from my diet. After a couple of weeks on this regiment it subsides. Seems my allergies accompanied with my diet triggers my symptoms. This is something I have learned to live and deal with whenever it flares up. Wonder how many of you have the sinus problems when these symptoms flare up, would be interesting to know.
