Pain/discomfort under right rib cage.

I have been experiencing this for the last few months, I have been searching the web looking for answers.  I am a 45 year old female, in good health, I take no medications, thin, active, I eat healthy, so I am at a loss. I have this feeling like there is something under my right rib cage as if something is stuck underneath or enlarged. At first I thought I had strained a muscle b/c I had been working out in the yard the day before it started. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like there is something there that shouldn't be but when I touch the area there is no swelling or bulge. After about 3-4 weeks when it wasn't going away I went to see my doctor. They did blood work, urine labs and sent me for an ultrasound of gallbladder, all came back normal. I have no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. just this feeling like something is there. It seemed to go away on it's own and then came back and has come and gone since sometimes lasting a few days, sometimes a few weeks. When it is back wearing a bra is uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a warmth or burning sensation in the area. The only other symptoms I have had that I think are related are these: A few months before this started I experienced a fluttering sensation, almost like when I was pregnant and the baby moved, in the same location, a couple of times. Since this has started, on 3 or 4 different occasions, I have experienced a charlie horse like spasm in the same area, below the right rib, when bending over from a sitting position. Does anyone have any answers as to what this might be?  Does it sound like IBS? Peptic Ulcer? Hiatal Hernia?

i too have has this pain under right rib for a year and a half . I have had numerous tests including CT, ultrasounds , endoscopy, colonoscopy and blood work . I have had some spots on my liver too but Drs didn't seem to be too concerned . I have no other symptoms however i do have MS so this is something I was thinking was some random pain associated with MS . I now see alot of people are having it . My Neurologist sluffed it off and said its a pulled muscle and told me to go swimming or do yoga. I have done yoga for a year and hasnt helped . I have seen many seen many specialists and now seeing a physiatrist . I have taken PPI for acid reflux and had pain injections in my side . Nothing has helped . I feel I am driving the Drs and emerg crazy . I see I am not alone . Going for a full abdominal ultrasound again tomorrow . Hopefully everyone gets some relief and figures out what theirs is or we just chalk it up to some phantom mystery pain

Hi everyone i wanted to post an update. Not sure if anyone is still even following this post. I’ve had the same issue with pain and pressure under my right rib. I’ve been complaining for about a year and a half. I’ve had a few emergency room visits or they’ve done bloodwork and ultrasounds. One time I even went in and they did a CT scan. For the past year and a half no results of anything have come up on the scans. i’ve seen the pain management clinic where they injected my side with something and it didn’t help. I’ve had an endoscopy and everything was fine. I’ve seen my neurologist because I have a MS and he wrote it off to be muscle. I knew there was something there and it wasn’t muscle. I was sent to a physiatrist who deals with pain as well and he was actually stumped with my side pain. He suggested I go back to the person who did my endoscopy as he still felt it was something to do with my gallbladder. I couldn’t get back in to see them so I ran it past my family physician again and asked if I can have another abdominal ultrasound . this is where they then found cysts on my kidney and liver. about 5% of the population have the cyst either on their kidney or liver or both. I have to go back in four months and do a repeat ultrasound. I did read up on it and found that they can cause pain. I noticed when she was doing the ultrasound that I couldn’t stand when she was pressing on those two organs. I’m not too sure what they can do other than surgery to remove them. But at least I believe I have my diagnosis after a year and a half. If any of you go ahead and ask for another ultrasound make sure you advise the tech who is doing the ultrasound to really check and make sure they check for cysts When a CT scan and a couple of other ultrasounds miss it then it’s got to be something that a detailed ultrasound has to diagnose. Good luck to everyone and please comment back if you end up getting the same diagnosis

I am so happy I found this forum. I thought I was crazy for so long. I have the same issue with discomfort under my right ribs. It started last year right around the time we went into lock down, so I've been dealing with this for nearly a year! It's so frustrating.

I initially thought the discomfort/tightness was my liver and happening because I was drinking more than usual thanks to pandemic boredom, taking a lot of ibuprofen (I had a new piercing that was very prone to swelling and my piercer told me to take ibuprofen to prevent excessive swelling) and not eating the healthiest. I cut back on the alcohol and pain medicine, started working out regularly, lost fourteen pounds (now 132 at 5'7' so in really great shape) and it did eventually go away. But last week it came back with an absolute vengeance. It doens't hurt at all (never has) but feels like my liver is too big for my rib cage or like I have a "bubble" under my ribs, sitting down or laying in certain positions is soooo uncomfortable, and this time around, it doesn't actually seem to be correlated with alcohol or pain killer consumption like I previously thought. My only theory now is my scoliosis has tilted my rib cage inward so it's crushing my liver? My left ribs poke out through my skin because that's the direction my spine tilts. I have an appointment April 1 to finally get it checked. Wish I'd gotten it checked sooner but it went away so I thought I was fine. Really glad that everyone who is going through something similar hasn't had a harmful diagnosis even if they still don't know exactly what is going on.

ask them specifically check for liver or kidney cysts . If you are getting an ultrasound then specifically ask the tech who does the scan . Give us an update when you know

Hello, I am a 56 year old male, cancer survivor. I get a sharp pain that lasts for several minutes right at the bottom of my right rib cage that presents with a medium sized lump. The episodes will last for several minutes, the lump will subside with lingering pain afterwards. I can go days without an episode then BAM, sometimes 3 or 4 right after another. I have been dealing with this for about 4 years. All scans, x-rays blood work show nothing. I have been told it can just be a muscle spasm ( was given muscle relaxers that do not help), a possible hernia ( had a mesh hernia repair 2 years ago nothing was seen then and nothing afterwards), to a simple I have no clue. My primary, oncologist and neurologists give me no answers. Today 03/07/21 I have had 3 episodes. This pain can be eye watering, fist clenching and take my breath away. I would think someone could at least have an answer after all this time. Goodluck

I have had a similar issues.

In between my lower ribs in my back on my side. when i get up from a chair/toilet or bend, it feels like the structure in between my ribs are being squished (like a bulging disc in the spine). I did a google search and it came up with this :

    An intercostal strain

Your intercostal muscles lie between your ribs, attaching them to one another. They help stabilize your upper body and help you breathe. There are three layers of intercostal muscles: the external intercostals, the internal intercostals, and the innermost intercostals.

A strain is when a muscle stretches, pulls, or is partially torn. A strain of any of the layers of the intercostal muscles can cause pain and difficulty breathing.

I've been having these same symptoms for a couple months now. my doctor thinks it may be a rib displaced and is sending me to a chiropractor. has anyone else done this?
