Pain/discomfort under right rib cage.

I have been experiencing this for the last few months, I have been searching the web looking for answers. I am a 45 year old female, in good health, I take no medications, thin, active, I eat healthy, so I am at a loss. I have this feeling like there is something under my right rib cage as if something is stuck underneath or enlarged. At first I thought I had strained a muscle b/c I had been working out in the yard the day before it started. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like there is something there that shouldn't be but when I touch the area there is no swelling or bulge. After about 3-4 weeks when it wasn't going away I went to see my doctor. They did blood work, urine labs and sent me for an ultrasound of gallbladder, all came back normal. I have no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. just this feeling like something is there. It seemed to go away on it's own and then came back and has come and gone since sometimes lasting a few days, sometimes a few weeks. When it is back wearing a bra is uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a warmth or burning sensation in the area. The only other symptoms I have had that I think are related are these: A few months before this started I experienced a fluttering sensation, almost like when I was pregnant and the baby moved, in the same location, a couple of times. Since this has started, on 3 or 4 different occasions, I have experienced a charlie horse like spasm in the same area, below the right rib, when bending over from a sitting position. Does anyone have any answers as to what this might be? Does it sound like IBS? Peptic Ulcer? Hiatal Hernia?

I know this post is old and I hope you are not still suffering, but reading this and the other replies I am shocked how many people including myself have similar issues that can't be explained...I've had dull ache on right rib area that disappears when lying down and develops as day goes on...some gurgling and gas also...no pain...just discomfort...had gallbladder removed 8 years ago after I had Pancreatitis so I'm wondering is it IBS or bile issues...I keep putting off doc as I'm hoping it will rectify itself, but it sounds so common

Has anyone looked into the MALS issue? Look it up. It sounds very similar.

I made an acct just to answer this for you because i had the same issue. I was in great shape, had built good core muscles but when I was in the car I felt like there was a ball or something pushing up under my lower right rib cage. No pain, just a weird discomfort. I had lots of tests and scans that showed nothing. One day I was in with a spinal doctor who said she had had that herself and it was a sacroiliac joint problem (which I was there for). It makes sense because when driving both legs/hips are positioned differently. On a side note I also have a true leg length discrepancy. I was sent to physical therapy and the problem resolved!

Hi everyone,
I hope i can help. Will tell you my symptoms first so you can see if they match up to yours...
A feeling of organs bulging out under ribs, it feels as if someone has been pumping vast amounts of air under my rib cage so everything is left enlarged and bulging. it doesn't hurt but feels gross and uncomfortable, almost a heavy feeling . Happens mostly at night but have had episodes that have lasted days with it.
I had other symptoms too, mostly relating to period issues such as heavy bleeding during periods, pain in ovary area, pain in lower back, ibs issues, sometimes issues with GERD.
The doc referred me for a scan and first it was discovered i had diverticula disease in my transverse colon which is where the little pockets get inflamed when food gets stuck and can cause infection which requires strong antibiotics. Although im doubtful this was what caused my issues as when found, it was not infected or inflamed at the time and i had the rib bulging issue the acual day i had the scan. I joined a group for diverticula disease online and discovered that this feeling does arise when diverticulitis happens(they call it diverticulitis when you get the infected diverticula). But I did not think it was down to that for me as previously.said, i hadit n't been in active flare and gotten diverticulitis, i just had the diverticula pocket there but it wasn't infected.
I had an mri scan and that revealed i had vastly spread endometriosis. it is like uterine tissue but it grows outside the womb and attaches organs together and just causes loads of inflammation. Everyone experiences it differently and at different levels depending on how far its spread and location of it etc. i saw a lady comment above that the doc told her it was DNA tissue growing in places but that is what i think she means. This endometriosis can be present from birth, has its own hormone supply and just grows. It affects at least 1 in 10 women and is 7+ years getting diagnosed due to its difficult nature(for me 25 years at least). It is not ofen shown on scans though, only when its reached a very bad point. Usuallly you will need a laparoscopy. Now im going to go out on a limb here and say I personally think some of you may have this. If you have any other symptoms such as heavy or painful periods then this is highly likely but its darn hard to get diagnosed but do keep pushing. Those of you with no period issues, then possibly diverticula issues(or other stomach issues as what that feeling is, is inflammation caused by something). And the people that are experiencing only an odd occasional sharp pain where it feels like something's slipping but nothing else, probably have a slipping rib. I feel there's a few different causes going on in this thread as not all symptoms are the same.
Sorry for long post but wanted to try and shed light to some of you. I'm due in hospital in a couple of weeks to have my first laparoscopy for them to go in and see how far this thing has spread and hopefully cut some of it out and separate my organs. Im hoping it will help this horrible bulging from under ribs feeling. Just to add it may be useful if you feel in flare with it, that you request an inflammatory marker blood test from docs. It might not show anything but it also might which will then push them to look further into things. Good luck everyone x

I have had exact same symptoms on left side for past 2 years. Totally wrecking my head trying to get to the bottom of it. Initially put on PPIs for stomach inflammation but they only made things worse so came off them. They totally were not the solution. Feel it's under rib cage but in chest wall, feels like a bubble stuck there when I'm talking which fluctuates from severe pain to a dull ache. Had mri of thoracic spine and abdomen and all were clear. Have tried physio, resting, chiro etc and no change. Slipping rib was suggested which is a possibility, also intercostal tear or a trapped intercostal nerve but it hasn't resolved with resting them. I'm fit, slim and active female and this feeling is there every day and it's just taken the joy out of my life...if anyone can shed any light on this please do!!!

I have been eating Sauerkraut like 15g per day and seems to be helping some. I know it sounds disgusting but I would eat dog crap if this would go away. The ache/pain or whatever we want to call it is still there but seems the ache/pain is duller. Eating it (not dog crap) puts me in a better mood for sure but it has been known to reduce inflammation, mood enhancement, better sleep. It is a probiotic to clean out the gut. It's not instant and will take a week before you feel anything and up to 6 weeks for the full benefit. But the key is to start small and build up slowly but the key is everyday consistency. Read up on Sauerkraut dosage and grams. What have you all got to lose by eating it in your diet? Let me know if you feel any better after a couple weeks. Maybe it's some sort of parasite that we've picked up since nothing shows up on scans, tests, or anywhere?

I have a Hiatus Hernia. This originates from a bad car crash in 2016 where I had extensive bruising and damage from the seat belt across my chest. I get various symptoms that flare-up and subside. One of the symptoms is a bad pain under my ribs on my right side that wakes me up at night. Sometimes the pain makes me vomit. Walking, stretching and burping alleviates the pain. Try not to worry because any stress makes hiatus hernia symptoms worse. It's a miserable thing to live with, but it can be managed. Find exercises and diet tips online. I also take slippery elm before meals and avoid onions and cheese.

Ok so 95% of people here states they have HH and remaining 5% more than likely have undiagnosed HH all of you have exact same symptom????? So why are you still looking for a cause of your pain ? Find a good surgeon and have it fixed.

If your doctor tells you that HH cant cause this type of symptoms, he/she is incompetent and go and find yourself a new competent doctor. Start by going to HH forum where there are thousands of people with HH suffer those exact symptoms and more . Lots of doctors are a joke these days and a disgrace to medical profession. Thats why all of that undiagnosed suffering.

Good morning all,
Ive been searching for almost four months with all the same symptoms you describe. Some of you might benefit from having your back looked at. I have a Neuro appt Tuesday and I will re-post to update. This forum really hit home, and was depressed after reading it thinking I would never find out what was wrong. Already found. T2-T3 herniated disc, but that would not affect my ribs. found an indent on my spine at bra strap level that I KNOW WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING, is the cause of the issues. If anything, reading all the responses at least let me feel that I wasn't crazy. I wanted to let you all know in case you didn't think of it, or have been left with no answers resulting in living in excruciating chronic pain.

So glad to find this discussion! Thought I was going crazy. I'm sure mine started with the flipping sensation in my upper abdomen under my right rib cage. Happened a couple of times while doing a Yoga Forward Fold stretch about 8-10 months ago. since then I have that discomfort, not at all painful, just uncomfortable. Its there most days and some days more obvious than others. I also think when it is more obvious I can also feel a slight catch in my back on the right also. Ultrasound showed nothing. Sitting makes it more obvious especially in the evenings. Keen to hear every ones updates.

Hi, 37 yo male with similar problems. No pain or aches, just a discomfort seemingly behind my lower right ribs. Seems especially noticeable on when lying on my right side or sat on the sofa with my knees bent towards my chest. Feels like something is stuck inside pushing everything out (similar to when you try to close a lid on a box which has not quite been repacked correctly). Despite this no lump found on physical examination.
This has happened since April but was diagnosed with overactive bladder in Jan. Do get GERD frequently. Bloods, urine, poo and ultrasound all clear. Do have pain in a very specific spot on my spine when pressed and chiropractor believes this could be related.
Interested to hear if others had issue resolved after treatment to back?
