Have you had a hearing test and a tympanogram (which tells you what is happeneing in youf middle ear/eustachian tube?) Following this you could try a dentist to see if the pain is coming from your teeth/jaw and then a chiropractor/physiotherapist if the pain is coming from your neck or back. I hope you get an answer soon. Ear pain is shocking!!!

I can always count on you for a reply thankyou.. I will have to try them things next i just find it bizarre how im in pain but nobody can find anything.. Ear pain is the worst! Can i ask are you from the uk?

I am in Perth, Western Australia. Hopefully the audiologist can tell you if there is an infection in your ear so you know where to go from there. All the best!!! x

Wow i would love to visit australia! Whats the weather like at the moment.. Do u think its worth having an ear swab?
    • Posted

The weather is about 37degrees celcius. HOT!!!! I don't think an ear swab is worthwhile as if the ENT can't see anything in the ear canal then it's not likely to be infected. The reason I recommend a hearing test and tympanogram is so that you can see if anything is happening behind your ear drum and in your eustachian tube.

Wow we dont hav that at any time during the year in the uk lol lucky you! Will i hav to be referred for a hearing test and tympanogram

No you should be able to phone up and book a hearing test but every country may be different so it won't hurt to ask when you phone up.

Is it just a normal hearing test im doing?

Went for my hearing test today.. She said my hearing is fine but i have some fluid behind my ear drum.. Could that be causing me pain?
    • Posted

ABSOLUTELY!!!!! Take the results back to another ENT. The one you saw should have at least checked your middle ear function and hearing!!! Go to one who specialises in eustachian tube dysfunction. If it is not able to be treated by nasal sprays and medications, it would be helpful if the ENT you are seeing can perform eustachian tube balloon dilation. The ENT receptionists will be able to tell you if the ENT performs this. Good luck. Glad you finally found out what the problem is!!!!

    Hello ranera,

I suffered from my years from the age of around 5-12, I was in loads of pain non stop often feeling like a hot needle was being put through my ear drums.

I got told I could of been offered grommits as the tubes in my ears where undeveloped so the pressure would build up and cause my ears to hurt.

That's one thing that could be worth asking about, as it sounds to me now that there not really helping you.

I had the same I was placed on antibiotics all the time and it would come back, and would often get worse in cold weathers.

I used to have a lot of time off for this however didn't think many people understood my situation.

Once getting older I did grow out of this, but my mom then experience a spell of trouble with her ears.

After her having so much pain, which used to cause her to go dizzy and feel like a heavy weight on the back of her neck and head and also often causing her to faint, she went back for them to then diagnose her with manyares disease.

I think this can be brought on by anything but not many people have it as it's uncommon, it effects your balance and you never really know when you will have a break out.

I would advise you to go back or do some reasearch into this more, so you can go back to your doctor and ask for certain help or advice on what you think it could be.

After all, we know our own bodies.

    I hope I've helped and I

Hope this is sorted out , as mine caused me many years of unwanted pain.

Good luck, I hope I helped.

Hi rahela, don't ask the ENT if you have Meniere's disease as you don't have the symptoms of hearing loss, vertigo etc and ENT's hate clients that self diagnose. Just let them know you need the fluid behind your ear drum treated.

I think the ENT would have picked up Menieres as the dizzy symptoms are more severe. You would expect to have hearing loss in one ear with Menieres as well.

Ahhh ok i seee.. Wt dyu think about one dr sayin infection in the ear canal and audiologist sayin fluid behind ear drum
    • Posted

You may have had an infection in the ear canal that cleared up. If there was an ear canal infection it would have been obvious to the audiologist. I presume they said you have fluid behind your ear drum because of the tympanogram. Is that correct?

She did the hearing test where i have to press the button whenever i hear a sound.. It that a tympanogram?
    • Posted

No that is the hearing test (also called an audiogram.) The tympanogram is a device that has a rubber looking tip on the end which is placed in each of your ear canals - you hear sound and feel a little bit of pressure. It measures how your ear drums and middle ears move. It tells the audiologist if there is fluid behind your ear drum by showing a Type B tympanogram. If your middle ear is working well you will have a Type A tympanogram. Can you find those results on the report they gave you?
    • Posted

I wasnt given a report but will try chasing it up now and see if i can get it
    • Posted

Whats the difference between type and b and what is the best way to get rid of this fluid?
    • Posted

Type A means the eardrum and middle ear are moving the way they should. Type B means either there is a hold in your eardrum or something, such as fluid, is stopping it from moving. Your ENT is the best one to tell you how to get rid of the fluid, but I would be seeing a different ENT to the one you saw before!!

If it is type a why dyu think iv gt the pain? All the ent i see i rubbish! An i most likely wint see one for atleast a week! Am in so much pain
    • Posted

If the audiologist said you have fluid in your middle ear then you won't have a Type A tympanogram. You would have to have some negative middle ear pressure.

Referral to ent will tke four weeks im in soo much pain though 😥

Can you go to the emergency department of the hospital and be seen by an ENT there? It doesn't sound right that you are in that much pain. I would phone the ENT and explain your situation. They will normally see you within 24 hours if they know you are in severe pain.

They will not see uou without a gp referral.. I find the pain wierd as its either sooo painful or really settled down
