pain on one side of throat lpr/post nasal drip

Hi. About 1 1/2 years ago I had very similar symptoms. pain when I swallowed on the left side which involved the ear too. I could drink and Icy type treat drink and it would feel better. My GP treated me for ear infections 3 times antibiotics and said I had wax and flushed my ear. None of that helped. The throat thing continued so I went to an ENT and had the scope thing through my nose. He said everything looked fine just that side was a little bit irritated. He told me to take omeprazole for about 3 months and try not to think about it too much and come back if it wasnt better. Well I only took the medicine for a couple of weeks and decided to cut the acidic foods out instead. It did get better. It is back. Mostly just my left side throat whenever I swallow. Sometimes it feels like a strained muscular like pain. Sometimes it is higher or lower in my throat. I was going through a lot of stress last week before it started. I dont know if that is related or not. If I put a little pressure on that side of my neck when I swallow it wont hurt. It does not hurt to push on it. I know that my neck and shoulders are pretty tense probably from worrying that its something bad. Anybody else notice this with the reflux? I do sleep on my left side. should I be considering post nasal drip?

    Hi There

I was so lucky to come across your discussion with young at heart regarding the LPR throat pain/itch. Exactly my symptoms as well. I see that was a while ago - do you still suffer from it or what was the eventual diagnosis did it all just go away following some PPI's & low acid dieting - please keep me posted. Going off my head during lockdown with the same symptoms. Stay safe & stay blessed

hi jurie. mine goes away if i watch what i eat. i don't like taking the meds so of i am very strict and eat really bland and low acid food it goes away. i was just reading though the thread again since it has been a while. i think the left side thing is because I mostly sleep on my left side. and one time when i was at the dentist when the lump kind of swelling was there when i swallowed, he gave me a couple of muscle relaxers and that part went away. so, maybe a couple of things going on there. Found a book called Acid Watchers diet that is supposed to talk about all this. I’ve only read the first few pages, but i found out about it while researching lpr when mine was acting up again recently.. hope this helps ((hugs))

Aaah thanks so much for the swift reply. Yes and it all happenned during these unprescedented times hey. I got a Corona scare off note! I've been researching this and also joined a online course (call it that) called refluxgate. Check it out it makes so much sense what this guy is saying and he interviews a variety of specialists etc. I'm on PPI blockers now but my body is absolutely hating it. Apparently people should worry about the Pepsin that goes up ones pipe from Silent reflus. He gargles with Bicarb (just be careful) and apparantly Gaviscon Advance addresses the issue but the liquid form was tested.

I'm right is saying it feels like a scratch/irritation thing right? I do think stress also plays a role and diet is huge.

It feels better since on the low acid diet 4 days ago. Have you had your voicebox checked at all. I went to the ENT specialist and I had some inflamation there and he put me on it about 4 weeks ago.

I really want this throat to go away. How long did yours last - I think I've had the scratch (was pain at first) for 3 weeks now. Is that normal?

Please let me know your thoughts. Well back to work - actually getting more done from home. Most importantly stay safe, stay blessed.

mine feels more like irritation/burn/sore throat and sometimes a lump feeling when i swallow. yes, i went to see an ent and he did the scope thing and said it just looked red/irritated and then gave me the rx and said he thought it was lpr. At that point, it had been going on for a few months. He told me to take the meds and try not to think about it and see how i felt in a few weeks. so, i took the meds for 2 weeks and then decided i would just change my diet and tried not to think about it and realized one day it was just gone. for me its no spicy stuff, no tomatoes, no coffee, no chocolate...and that helps it get better. and then i can enjoy those things again....i just cant overindulge

Thanks so much for the reply. I read the book you recommended. Acid Watchers Diet. Very good reading indeed!

OK so I've had it for 3 weeks and my ENT pre lockdown said the same thing. I'm off the favourite dark choc and coffee for 3 weeks now and following the Low Acid diet etc. It feels so much better.

How long did yours take to get better on average before the scratch goes away - Mine was sore for about a week and now just irritated on the left but slowly improving. I was just cautious that it forms a cist or polyp etc. Were you able to talk at all or did you give your voicebox a complete break?

We looking forward to the next cuppa I can tell you that much. Thanks again for the great read! Best

you just described my exact symptoms perfectly...I was recently prescribed Omeprazole (sp?) and have been on it a week. But this was thru urgent care based on symptom description, no testing done. Symptoms have lessened slightly but I have the weird muscle sensation, sometimes when I turn my head. This is the first I've heard of someone else having this symptom. And yes..

TONS of stress which I feel isn't helping. Mine is left side only (I mainly sleep on that side also). Some days (or times of day) is it worse than others. My ear bothered me more last couple of weeks than this past week. The last couple of days I feel a sensation in my throat when I talk (but not every time I talk). Between the symptoms and worrying about the symptoms I think I'm going to lose my mind! 🤪

Massage your throat and also drink gaviscon advanced. Speak to your local pharmacist also.
