Pain relief?

Hi everyone I am new on here , I am 32 yrs old and need double hip replacements, really bad arthritis in both hips due to shallow hip sockets , surgeon said i have only about a quarter coverage of the joint 😔 I was ok until around 4 yrs ago when I used to have the odd achey day every now and then , until last year when the pain started to get worse , went to Dr , had x Rays etc sent for physio but they wod touch me so referred to MR White at woodlands , Darlington , booked In 13th may to have right hip replaced .

Just wondering how everyone else copes with pain? I am on buprenorphine patches , paracetamol , narproxen , codiene, amytriptlyne but I can honestly say it really doesn't help 😔 sleeping is becoming impossible and dnt get any ease, hoping that replacement will give me my life back so I can stop the meds!

Will be nice to chat to people that know what the pain is like , my husband , family and friends are very supportive but it's so hard to explain how bad the pain is on a day to day basis , simple things I can't do like putting my own socks on are starting to get me down

I had a trhr last November I was on similar tablets to Yu nothing worked, since I had the op pain has bin lot better although I had few problems so it has took me longer and I had to have a serious injection top of hip three weeks ago due to muscle problem but touch wood pain is getting better, I am having hydro therapy next week. What I would say is after your op take watever Painkillers Yu can get and push to get some physio through your doctor

    Hiya Rachael

Im the same age as you and have just had my left hip done, I was taking codine and paracetamol but far too much, sometimes it eased the pain sometimes it didn't do anything. I'm 3 and half weeks in now and am glad to say pain killer free, I keep going for them out of habit but then realise I don't need them anymore. I was very worried I was killing my insides with them but hopefully I have seen the back of them. Well they might come in handy for a bad hangover haha.

I am very glad i went ahead and did it, still a good bit of recovering to do but 1 day at a time, I'm looking forward to getting my life back on track.

Well all the best with the op, I'm sure you will be over the moon with the results!

    Hi Rachael

    I was on similar med to you....Had 2 THR's {4yrs apart!!!! theycouldnt decided if it was coming from my back or my hip}

Just keep looking forard to13th May.....its not really far away although it may seem it.wink

Have you tried hot or cold on the pain?......heat helped me. A heat pad that goes into the microwave works wonders when you are really sore.  Exercise,

but go by what the physio says, some exercise could make it worse.

You are right about supportive family.  I have a very supportive husband and we should count ourselves lucky but if they dont have it they cant really understand how bad it is.  Thats why forums like these are good because we are all in he same bvoat and can understand.  I'm from the North East as well.wink

Keep your chin up and then se what May 13th brings

Hi, greetings pre op hippe from the south east.

Horrible what you are going through and understand fully before my TLHR. Pains all over the place, tried various pain killers but did not work. Just gritted teeth and walked to try keep muscle strength for my op.  Very difficult but my wife fully understood and helped wonderfully.

Now had the op about 6 weeks ago and although some stiffness pain upper hip and operation scar bit sensitive still, so so much better. Well worth some of the operation issues like leg swelling and disturbed sleep pattern (say this as not explained to me by anyone pre op) but is manageable and will go in time.  Good luck and very best wishes to you for your May op and a speedy recovery after.

    Hi Rachael,

Before my op I was taking paracetamol and Ibuprofen, which did dull the pain a bit but it got really bad just before the op.  The GP did prescribe co-codamol but had to stop taking them as they made me dizzy and constipated.  After the op, only took paracetamol but was able to leave that off after 2 weeks because I had no pain at all and it felt wonderful.  Hope everything goes well for you.  By the way you still won't be able to put your own socks on for 6 weeks after the op, unless you get a sock aid, which is a wonderful thing and also don't forget a grabber as this is very useful.  Good luck.

Hi Rachel.  I sat here feeling really sorry for myself, I'm an active woman, full of beans usually until my knee hurt more than I could bare.  Now waiting for THR and dreading the operation, recovery etc etc.  your message has made me count my blessing.  I'm twice your age and all I need to get by is one Ibruprofen and two painkillers a day!  So, I read your message and realised how lucky I am.  Good luck to you.  I hope the operation will be the start of a new and better life for you, you deserve no less.

Ah thank you , I am seriously struggling at the moment but the end is in sight . Just want my normal life back with no pain meds . I actually sat last night n just cried think it's a mixture of pain, tiredness n frustration.

I try and be positive , there are a lot worse things in this world but the constant pain wears you down, I am sure you know that feeling.

Hope you get sorted too , thank you for the kind words x

Hi Rachael!..oh you will be one happy camper when you have your hips done! My first THR was 20 years ago and my second..two weeks ago! Sure you get frustrated not being able to do all the things you want yo do...but..it is SO worth it.  I marvel that we live in a day and age when these miracles can be performed.  I sit and think about all the people who suffered without hope before this amazing surgery became a reality.  You would know but you are going to change all that!

best of luck Rachael..........Molly from Ontario, Canada

I am normally ok and just get on with the pain but it's unbearable now so surgery is my last hope, Dr has said nothing else he can do to help my pain as I am on high dose of every painkiller he can give me , I hope that the replacements give me my life back, I hope that you also are helped by the surgery, good luck for your op 😊
