Pain under left ribs

Hi,

I've been having recurring pain under my lower left ribs for 5 months now. Dr has tested bloods, all normal. Had full cardiologist check, ecg etc all normal. The pain initially felt like a really uncomfortable ball under my ribs and I struggled with sitting for a couple of days. Standing, walking etc all ok. Lying down helped but not on my back as it felt like something was pulling at my ribs.

Was put on lanzoprapole and felt not too bad. But after a small holiday, lots of food, moderate alcohol it niggled away but not so bad as first time and recently it's flared up horribly.  I had one day I had to stay in bed as the pain went all round lower left side and stabbing pain in the back. If I sneezed it was very very painful.

I've got a gastroenterologist appt in over a week so should find out more but wondered if anyone else has had similar symptoms?

I've no idea if this is related to pancreas but I have had multiple doses of antibiotics that I've discovered can cause this in pancreas. My pain is most definitely left side and right at the bottom of the ribcage.

    hello

Ive been having this problem for almost two yrs now. The pain used to only bother me at night when i laid down but now its constantly hurting . ive been to my doctor and she seems to think its all muscular /costochondritis. She sent me for a mammo /sono . Ive been to the er and had a chest xray and sono all which came back fine. i was diagnosed with cotochondritis . Fast forward 2 years the pain is so bad it worries me alot and i dont believe its costochondritis so i decided to see a different dr. Blood work all came back ok . chest xray came back normal . ct scan of abdomen came back normal. This week im doing the ct scan of my chest . i cant take this pain anymore! i feel like theres a ball under my left rib. i have a constant dull pain there which worsens throughout the day. Its as if something is pinching/pulling in there too and i feel whatever it is will pop.. The pain used to only be under my left breast bone but now it my whole left rib cage and radiates to my back shoulder blade . im so afraid bc its so much worse ! idont know what im gonna do if these tests dont show anything

      hi alysa ,

I have exactly the same symptoms , it sometimes feels like you have something alien in your upper abdomen area and is tugging / pulling inside ! it is there constantly there, worse some days than others , hopefully i can get a ct scan next but with covid going on, it seems impossible to get much done . mine is still very much left sided, under left rib , but also wraps around my back . i also get burning sensation at the top of my abdomen , i have never suffered with acid reflux or heartburn , so i dont think its anything like that . there seems to be quite a lot of people on this forum , but no real diagnosis .

Wondering if my condition is related to anyone else that has responded.

Background, heart issue with top and bottom chambers don't communicate properly, electronically. Hence, pacemaker. Also Hypertrophic Cardio Myopathy (Enlargement of heat muscle). The Myopathy was caught early and stalled. The Cardiologist also refers to Congestive Heart Failure. Almost 70 years old. Good health, slim, eat very well, and don't drink at all and don't smoke. Been building my own house, pretty much by myself, so pretty fit, but heart issues slow me down a bit.

My pain started out as if was a pain from exercise, like a side ache after running as a kid. the pain in located in and under the left rib cage, about elbow distance down left side and when arm is rested on side of body. Depending on when, it seems to migrate from side to a little to back to little in front, with no pattern I have discovered. Can't sleep on that side and is worse when there is pressure on rib cage, like laying on back. I can find comfortable position on right side, but only slightly better. Been having to sleep kind of sitting up. Went to doctor, but because of Covid, had to do phone call with him. He had me do x-ray first. my description concerned him to point of sending me to ER. They were packed and it took a few hours for anything to be done, but they eventually drew blood, and sent me back to lobby to wait. Then, sometime later they moved me from lobby to an intake interview room. They gave me a pain med pill (Norco) and a little later took me to have an EKG. The pain med didn't do anything, so they put an IV in, and injected Morphine. That gave some crazy side effects but worked for about a half hour. Then it was off to have CT Scan. Waited for a while and finally doc came in and said they couldn't find anything. Gave me 5 prescriptions... (Norco) pain killer, antibiotic, steroid, pain patch, and a nausea med, in case other meds cause nausea. They couldn't find anything wrong. Then they sent me home, no better than when I got there.

I have had this horrible pain around my rib cage for the last 3 years. I was diagnosed with POTS 2.5 years ago. POTS is horrible and the pain is horrible. I have been to more doctors than I can count and none of them have helped me. My liver enzymes are elevated now along with pre diabetic numbers between 100-110, my lungs are hyper-inflated (normal 4 years ago) I have uncontrollable inflammation throughout my body yet no one knows why or how to even help me. I have sever allergies to chemicals and have reacted to every single inhaler they have put me on with hives or a ID reaction. I am now on a monoclonal antibody Dupixent. It has been the only thing that has kept me alive so far. Going back to the electrophysiologist to be re-evaluated. I can not handle the pain any more. My quality of life is pathetic, I work and have to remain horizonal the rest of the time to keep my heart rate down, i am just a burden on everyone around me. I would never ever in a million years allow someone to use life saving measures on me if I would have to return to this condition still not knowing why i am in so much pain. I would rather be dead. Good luck to you, I hope you have better luck with the Health care system and Doctors than I have.

    Hi Fiona,

I have exactly the same symptoms as you . Dont know if you have seen other members posts , someone said that they had been diagnosed with Splenic Flexure syndrome . they were prescribed Bentyl by their doctor which seems to help . Im still going back and fore to my GP who seems to think its IBS . They really do not seem to be concerned ! please could you keep us updated as i think sharing updates will be helpful .

I struggled with this for 5 years, maybe more. Finally found a good doctor who got me a ultrasound, then ct scan both of which indicated something happening with the left kidney. I was then referred to a Urologist (kidney specialist) who sent me for a Mag-3 scan in which they inject you with a substance and watch the fluid/dye pass through your kidneys, the scan confirmed what is called a PUJO which mean PUJ obstruction, this is the urethra that comes off of your kidney that leads down to the bladder. This obstruction can vary from person to person in being a stone, the muscle of the urethra not working correctly to help push the wee down, a incorrectly formed urethra from birth or but not limited to the urethra being routed on the wrong side of the blood vessels/artery from birth which in my case it were the urethra being on this incorrect side of the artery. So what happens is the artery may 'kink' the urethra causing obstruction to the flow of urine, this builds up pressure in the kidney causing it to swell (called hydronephosis) in which causes pain. In terms of the latter three, the urethra developement, routing or incorrect function of the muscle itself these are all present from birth but can not have an effect on you for years, some people develope issues as teens, some in their 20's as with me at maybe somewhere around 25-27, or even late in life. Some people will lose the kidney if they don't have it operated on, this surgery is called robotic assisted pyeloplasty in which I am having mine done in 9 days. The issue thankfully led me to really getting my life together, I also discovered I were iron deficient which I believe may have come into effect around the same time as this issue so the kidney may have brought that on or the iron deficiency may have helped exacerbate the symptoms of the urethra/kidney issue. I would recommend seeing a Urologist to everyone who has this issue! Also, look after yourself and your health, get your blood work done, iron level checks etc, all lead to an amazing completely different level of health and happiness in life. If anyone ever wants to ask me more questions feel free to add my company Instagram and message me on there, I will get back to you as I'd love to help knowing how much of a b@tch this can be in anyone's life. @hvfil_

    Much love,

    Daryl (Age, 33, male)

I have been dealing with this for the past 4 years. I'm sure symptoms are similar to everyone else.

      • mild pain/pressure under left rib, near bottom (sometimes directly at my side, slightly around front or slightly around back) I want hook fingers up under to feel, but can't.
      • pain is pretty constant but if I'm doing something (gardening, golfing, etc) I hardly notice it.
      • it itches, same spot, multiple times a day, mild
      • can't sleep on left side comfortably
      • nothing makes it better or worse, such as eating, but some days are better than others. But I do have lots of gas as I always have my life.
      • microscopic blood in urine tested 2 yrs ago. ultrasound revealed nothing other than minor cysts (2 yrs ago). haven't been to Dr in 2 yrs from covid.
      • no other symptoms really, very active, 43 male, social drinker, tired from parenting, can do intense workouts but will be winded carrying kids upstairs
      • losing hair around ankles (odd?), legs, lower back will hurt like I was active but wasn't

I want to rule out anything serious. I could live with it if I knew not to be worried. it's annoying but the unknown is worse.

Anyone have ANY other ideas? These posts are helpful to take questions to the Dr (hopefully soon).

(I've itched 3 times while writing this)

I've been dealing with the same type of pain for 1.5 years. Feels like a rock is under my rib cage, and it radiates to my back and sometimes lower back but only on the left side. It comes and goes and I never know when it's going to hit. The first time it happened, I was up all night in extreme pain and it lasted for about 12 hours. Nothing OTC would help the pain. The pain lasts anywhere from 3-7 days now and it could happen again a week or a month later.

I've been through the following tests: 2 pelvic/abdominal CTs, CT of my kidney, Upper Endoscopy with biopsies, Colonoscopy with biopsies, external and internal uterine ultrasounds, chest x-ray, chest CT scan of my heart and lungs, cystoscopy, and a renal scan. Everything came out negative. This Thursday, I have small intestinal imaging done, where they give you barium and watch it over a few hours to see if there is a blockage. Urologist told me that my left kidney is only working about 21% but that this would not be the cause of my pain and that it has probably been this way since I was young. which makes sense since I had kidney issues as a young child.

Bloodwork that I've had: CBC's, liver and pancreatic panels, tumor markers, and heart bloodwork. I'mes before or after the pain hits. Not always though, just sometimes which is weird. I also bruise really bad, horrible itching skin sometimes with a rash, skin tears, and a 30 lb weight loss in the last 7 months. I have to take weight gainer to keep above 125. I'm 5'9" tall and female. I'm also on Tramadol which I hate taking, 100 mg only takes the edge off of the pain. I also feel as if something is sucking the life out of me. This problem makes me bedridden for days and on sick leave, which sucks.

I was wondering if anyone else has any additional symptoms such as the ones I listed? From what I've been researching is it could be anything. I went to the ER about 3 weeks ago and the doctor was very concerned. He said it has to be something they can't see on imaging.

Hi. I'm having similar problems. For 4 months now i've had a pressure sensation under my left rib, it feels like there is a ball or something hanging from my lower left rib. I don't notice it ad much when im walking around, I only seem to notice it when im sitting down. I've been to the ER, they did blood work and xrays told me im fine they dont know what it is and sent me home. I went to my doctor and she blood work and a ultra sound, everything came back normal. I made another appt with my GP but that is not until march. I'm so worried it's something serious.

Hello everyone. I've been struggling with this sensation for just over six months now (It started when my IBS symptoms began). It's called Splenic Flexure Syndrome, and is a very common IBS symptom. The good news is that it's physically harmless, but it can be incredibly distressing psychologically. Try taking antidepressants for it. With IBS, often times people's GI tracks become hypersensitive, so you're feeling things that you previously haven't before. Tricyclic antidepressants and SNRI's are used to treat hypersensitivity. I'm on 150 mg of Desipramine and it's helped around 80% in terms of the sensation. Anticonvulsants are also used to treat visceral hypersensitivity. I'm currently looking into adding an anticonvulsant (i.e. Gabapentin and Lyrica) to get me the rest of the way there. I hope that helps.

hi Fiona, I have been feeling a lot of these symptoms, with slight differences. For me it started with a piercing pain (not so intense) on the lower left ribs on the back side. I would get it occasionally and then it spread to the front part of the lower left ribs. A few days in, this brought some sort of a sore/ache feeling along my left rib, wrapping around it kind of. I can also feel my stomach making a lot of noise but the specific location of the stabbing pain, plus it moving up under my shoulder blade, makes me wonder that this can't be trapped gas. I googled the symptoms and they suggest straight things like pancreatic cancer which made my anxiety spike. It has only been a week so far but I will seek medical help if it persists. In the meanwhile, anyone any clue? Thanks tons!

wow. well I'll join the party hoping to hear something as well.

I've had the pain under left rib cage high up. sometimes feels like it radiates down the descending colon. pain that I thought was kidney stone pain has come along with it. it's worse after I eat and after my colonoscopy the pain in that spot was really magnified due to the air they put in there, but I was thinking that would mean the pressure was hitting something I that area. CT scan was clear and scopes. so my GI sent me away saying it was IBS or muscular..?? that was 3 months ago. it's still there and my GP ordered an mri just to ease my mind but no appt. yet 8 weeks later... I. getting pretty anxious about it tbh. It pretty much there everyday all day.

and if I lay on my left side it way worse.

I keep seeing splenic flexure?. can the left side splenic area be that high up as to cause pain that mimics pancreatic pain.???
