Pain under ribs on right hand side

Posted , 115 users are following.

Hi, for 5 months now I have been experiencing a stitch like pain under my ribs on the right hand side. I had my gall bladder scanned, all was ok. Had liver function test, all ok. Kidneys scanned - all ok. Test for ulcer - all ok. The pain is intermittent.

Not sure if it is connected, but five months a go I stopped taking sugar in tea and switched to sweeteners (aspartame). I got through 100 tablets in two weeks. My stomach ballooned with gas and I belched a lot. The pain appears to have come on shortly after this. Whether the sweeteners had anything to do with it, I don't know. I am male, 40 years old, reasonably fit and a non smoker.

Thanks.

Found this forum and started reading all the posts. It's amazing how many people have this same issue without any type of resolution or direction from the medical industry. I found a lot of good information in these posts that I can use for my own issues. Heal_Yourself, good info I will try.

I wanted to share my story so that maybe it can be informative to someone else. About 5 years ago I woke with a dull ache in my right side front. To say it was an ache is an overstatement, it felt more like someone had a finger pressed on my side, no pain at all just a nuisance. I figured it would go away on its own. A couple of years pass and I finally feel like it's time to have it checked out. I have blood tests done for liver, gallbladder function, etc., ct scan, sonogram, mri, and an endoscopy, all with unremarkable results. The doctors found nothing. The only thing told to me was by the GI doctor who performed the endoscopy. He told me that I may have a little too much acidic food or drink in my diet. "OK?". I do drink alcohol and at the time I was drinking a lot of coffee. So without any concrete evidence to go with I felt discouraged. Fast forward to today. Over the last few months my ache has turned into a pain that goes from the front along my right side lower rib to my back. Pain is worse in the morning when I'm getting out of bed and seems to alleviate after standing for a while. Stretching and twisting hurt as well. I have been exercising frequently and pain seems to be worse the morning after more strenuous workouts. Went back to see my doctor and currently have more blood tests and a back x-ray ordered which will be done tomorrow. I feel like now I may have two different issues that intersect. Who knows. I will post again once my results are known

I suffered for years with pain under my ribs on my right side. I had an ultrasound, Hidda scan , endoscopy, colonoscopy and a ct scan. Only thing they said was I had ibs. I'm convinced this is what they tell you when thddont know what is going on. I eliminated gluten and all pain was gone within days. I also had been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder, depression and premenstrual disforic disorder and all of those symptoms went away as well. I feel better than I have ever felt. My husband and son have been diagnosed with celiac and I assume that is what I have as well. After much research I have found that it causes a ton of health problems, including cancer. I hope is helps if you are still suffering!

Well, you just won't believe this one. After suffering my third bout of this (normally lasts 9-12months each one) its gone after 12months!! It must be coincidence that I was drinking large amounts of apple juice around 0.5 litre per day and eating two apples a day too. I just felt the urge to do this, no-one told me to do it. After this I looked it up and on some sites they say that apples/apple juice help to clean the liver???? I cant say even 75% that this helped me but I still have a glassful a day and touch wood no probs. But I had a 10 year reprieve before and then it came back even worse, but just thought I mention it.

Hi all, just found this site after having acute discomfort under right rib for over a year. I did have a cough at the time, and put it down to that, but when it persisted, have followed it up with an x-ray, kidney scan and ct scan, all clear, also a blood test for coeliac. The consultant says it's probably muscular, and would refer me for pain relief, but it's not really painful, more a feeling of something strange going on, annoying and uncomfortable. I was Interested to read about the health cures and will try them all, starting with the apples/juice. I have been on statins for several years, and am considering stopping them too. I believe a side effect of those can be muscle problems? I am interested to see any results people have with the remedies suggested on here...good luck everyone!

Quick question: Does any of your rib pain manifest as back pain? I've been going back and fourth for almost a year now unable to figure out what is plaguing me. I've thought for a while I was suffering from back pain. Every time I lie down on my right side my rib hurts really bad and yet when I wake up I always seem to find myself on my right side. I've gone to docs and they've just said it is muscular back pain. Well I've done all of the recomended PT regiments and have seen no change.

But then I've noticed that pretty much since I started having this pain I also have had bad gas. The pain seems to get worse when I eat nuts, or very fatty foods. I am wondering if maybe I a having Gall Bladder or Liver issue.

    Hi Damian,

I have been suffering with same symptoms for almost a month. Recently, I went to my doctor and asked them to do a yearly thyroid check. My TSH for past 3 years said it was in normal range but what i noticed shocked me. My thyroid every year increased and in 2013 i was as the borderline of thyroid but just this year my thyroid show in range on 1>2. I demanded my doctor for Ultrasound of throat and come to find out my thyroid nodules are normal but thyroid gland is enlarged. Anyways, this information forced me to look at alternative home remedies. I forgot to mention, Last year i was diagnosed with H. Pylori and Acid Reflux. I completed H.pylori antibiotics but never got relief from it. I was also put on Prilosec but no relief!!! Well, Recently, i started researching about thyroid, acid reflux, and liver due to pain on my right rib cage. What i discover was shocking! Just a simple home remedy can cure your greatest diseases.

For the problem you are having i suggest you try consuming a 1 teaspoon of GHEE along with warm milk consume it 3 times a day! What i came to find out is this remedy does not just help with Acid Reflux but also help calm Duodenum that is located right next to your liver. If you find relief right away as i did...Call your doctor and ask them to check your Duedonum. I hope you find relief and try to search for home remedies for your problem instead of popping pills that will only create more side effect in your body!!

P.S. This remedy truly saved my life!!!

    Good Luck,

    Ash

I am a 19 yr old female, and I've been experiencing a pain that I describe as "someone wringing out a wash cloth" under my right ribs. I don't drink soda, alcohol, I rarely consume fast food / junk food, and I work out often. I've just recieved a ultra sound today, so I'm waiting on the results for that. I haven't related anything to the pain, besides random and painful. It's not constant. I know it's not kidney stones because I have had dozens of stones since I've been 8 years old, so I know exactly what they feel like. I really hope someone can figure out this pain and it doesn't go under my doctors list of "not sure what it is and the pain isn't constant so we'll just ignore it" list. (that happened when I complained of my kidneys aching when there is no kidney stone and no UTI). Hopefully something can be figured out.

With all due respect to people comments I feel we're starting to drift somewhat to the causes and cures.  Sweeteners, really!!! If you view all the posts re this 'pain under the right rib' there is not one common thread where people have said 'this is what it was' it would be great if we could pin it down but its clear we cannot.  Lets look at what we can say, we all have similar symptoms although these are different in many cases too.  So what does that tell us?  We've not got the same illness or whatever you wish to call it.  We all or many of us have the same tests with the same results = nothing, most are put on the same treatment which again we cannot say does or does not help.  Again most of us have this come and go, it can last two years and then just go???? It at this time (when it goes) we look at what we have changed and then automatically jump to the conclusion that, that was the silver bullet. The medical profession don't know what it is, not one person has said on this thread my doctors says its this and then they did this and I'm cured.  The fact is (and its not a fact any of us like) we don't know for certain.  I'm happy for anyone to believe that this or that was to blame. Sorry to woffle but let me share this one with you: We are all are lead to believe that pesticides are the work of the devil are we not? But did you know that most of the vegetable we eat produce a toxin far worse that any pesticide in reaction to pests when they get infected!!! This forum is great but lets stick to the facts and come up with answers, to be honest and not a lot of people will like this but I'm leaning towards stress related   excess acid which has to be treated with medication for long periods and not the one month as per normal for ulcers.

What r u talking about. You sound like your confused...But i have to admit stress plays a great part in all this but you need to find out whats causing the stress and let it go then you will know if thats your case. I dont know, pain going and coming could be simple gas sp try activated charcoal with an anti gas and anti bloating see if that works for you..

Humm, confused why?? Do you have a more definitive answer?? Pain that stays for months or years is not wind is it??? Like I said in the post you which you refer to me has confused, the medical profession don't have the answers so what conclusions do you draw from that?? And your comment re stress is somewhat naive to say the least.  We have little idea of what stress can do to the body, most people not even realising they have it.  If it was so simple as you say to 'find out what's causing the stress and let it go' you could half the NHS budget.  So whats your theory to everyones pain, a bottle of bitters??? Reply with conclusions drawn from the facts within the posts, NO medical tests or treatments have diagnosed and then cured anyones pain within these posts, no ones died from it, no ones been operated on,(apart from gall bladder) no one can tell you whats bought it on or indeed whats made it go, so whats left????

Why do you always reply to peoples comments with "You must be stressed or it sounds like its stress related"!! Listen up ! Everyone has a certain degree of stress in their lives , its a common fact, and stress can be a killer, but just answering with stress as an answer is not a cure.

We arent trying to cure just give advice and if its not what you are looking for then go to the doctor for your cure as that is what they claim to do. We listen and advise as to what each person describes they are going through, so this site may not be what you need so see ya!
