Pain under ribs on right hand side

Posted , 115 users are following.

Hi, for 5 months now I have been experiencing a stitch like pain under my ribs on the right hand side. I had my gall bladder scanned, all was ok. Had liver function test, all ok. Kidneys scanned - all ok. Test for ulcer - all ok. The pain is intermittent.

Not sure if it is connected, but five months a go I stopped taking sugar in tea and switched to sweeteners (aspartame). I got through 100 tablets in two weeks. My stomach ballooned with gas and I belched a lot. The pain appears to have come on shortly after this. Whether the sweeteners had anything to do with it, I don't know. I am male, 40 years old, reasonably fit and a non smoker.

Thanks.

      Hi TriumphMonkey

I've been reading this post and what you describe is exactly what I am going through at the moment. I was wondering if you found out what was actually going on and did you find a solution?

      Many thanks

Hi all, I can't tell you how reassuring finding this forum is!! I started having pain around my right kidney area

with vomiting early November, a visit to the practice nurse got a diagnosis of biliary colic maybe kidney stones, 5 days later still in agony despite 2 lots of antibiotics and diclofenec I saw the gp who thought gallstones and referred me for an ultrasound. 6 weeks later I had the ultrasound, by now the pain is radiating from the right kidney area, around under my ribs and if I press on my bottom right rib a shooting pain goes through my

body! I am still vomiting and feeling nauseated and have lost 15lbs...which is the silver lining in all this.

The ultrasound reveals nothing, everything looks normal, no gallstones, liver, pancreas, kidneys and spleen all appear normal.

Go reffered me to a Urologist who has now requested a CT scan of kidneys as apparently kidney stones don't show up on ultrasound!

I have been off work 9 weeks, the pain is there as a nagging, dull ache all the time with episodes of throbbing, shooting pains, I am still vomiting but not quite as often, there was microscopic traces of blood in my sample and I feel like I might just be going mad!!! :-)

Hey guys well I decided that I was going to stop going to the doctors and of course the pain is only getting worse. I look half dead every day without makeup. Well normally all the doctors and well everyone ask what really hurts. I could never tell because I hurt to bad in one area that I couldn't be sure. Well it is actually my lower stomach that hurts, its also my left side that t hurts. I always feel like I'm going to throw up but it hasn't happened yet. But now my mother is saying that I could be allergic to gluten. But does anyone have any ideas for the pain all the pain killers I have been getting are not working anyways.

My pain isn't in the same league as many others seem to suffer from. As mentioned before I had the ultra sound and x-ray which revealed nothing, and I had no other symptoms apart from the pain.

Although it is just about still there, on a day to day basis I don't feel any discomfort.

I am wondering if it could be lifestyle related. I will be 63yrs old next moth, and am semi-retired.

The result of which is I tend to sit down a lot more, especially in the winter, Watching TV, and sitting at the computer. Sometimes I notice my trousers are too tight, and I have to loosen the belt and undo the top button when sitting down.

Not the full answer maybe, but possibly a contributory factor. ?

Well my doctors say that it also has something to do with my stomach but I can't make it from where I live and the bills are to expensive. My grandpa wants me to stop drinking pepsi and my mother wants me to stop drinking milk and eating gluten. Personally I think she wants me to fast for a few days, but come on I'm a growing kid I need food. what should I do.

I am experiencing this same type of pain, it comes and goes, just figured it was a strained muscle but has been going on too long. I will try some of these suggestions posted. Just to let you know I don't think it to be gall bladder because mine was surgically removed 35 years ago and having same type pain. Not a doctor just letting you know I have no gall bladder and having same issue.

Appendix was removed at same time as gall bladder, I don't drink alcohol but to take ibuprofen from time to time.

My appendix was removed too, 5 days ago I left the hospital, they prescribed me to drink antibiotics for those 5 days, The pain started yesterday for me, when I finished drinking the antibiotics, maybe the pain is related to my appendix being removed? The pain is horrible, it hurts when I breathe, I can't laugh, it hurts like a knife is stabbing me. It hurts the most when I lay down, so I can't sleep normally at all... I hope it will get better soon ;( I'm going to the doctor tomorrow, I'll see what they say...

I'm just wondering if you all are talking about the pain I'm experiencing. If I push on my right rib cage, or lay on my right side, I have pain. Moving in general, I notice the problem, but nothing unbarable. It's kind of an anoying feeling, kinda scary not knowing what it is. Dull ache! Twisting hurts. Very annoying.

      Hi Lisaann,

I know if has been a while since this thread was active, but I was hoping you could tell me if you ever found a proper condition for these symptoms?

I am having the same as you mentioned along with other digestive issues.

      Thank you.

I have a similar pain on my rhs, the muscle goes into spasm along my bottom rib and locks on. At the bottom of my Sturnum the muscle is also locked on. I'm 46 and it first happend 3-4yrs ago, I've visited the doctor many times but without much success. I did have some tests and also had a fatty liver, I'm around a stone overweight.

Interesting reading advice from "heal yourself" on a couple of occasions my muscle went crazy straight after drinking a pint. Last summer I lost the stone and I'm pretty sure it improved. Obviously I've put the weight back

on and recently it's started again. Tonight I had an attack, lying on the sofa I've gone to sit up and bang the muscle has turned on. This one only lasted a minute or so and it relaxed, I did eat the most amazing cup cake after dinner loaded with sugar after dinner!

I'm off to find the health products advised by "heal yourself" thank you

Hi I'm a newbie here. For last 6 months gave had a constant pain on right side under my ribs, feels like a dull ache. I also have a very tender tummy. About 3 months ago I had chronic indigestion and my GP gave me lansaprazole . This unfortunately gave me very loose bowels so as swapped to omneprazole. Bowels now more settled. Had all bloods done including LFT all normal. Now waiting for endoscopy. I'm in my 50s and normal weight. No longer get the indigestion but have constant taste in mouth and dry mouth. Any advice please?

Hey, I'm 15 too, and I have the same pain under my ribs on my right hand side, it started a couple of days ago for me, i recently just got out of the hospital and I had to get surgery done, i had appendicitis, so I got my appendix removed. When I got home, 5 days ago, they told me to drink 3 pills every day for five days, and yesterday I just finished drinking the pills and that's when the pain started... I'm not sure what it is, maybe it's because of the surgery? I'm scared, i don't want to go back to the hospital again sad

You need to tell your parents first  and go back to the doctor.
