Painful Burning Sensation In Urethra - No Uti Or Std - Female

Posted , 141 users are following.

I am a 21 year old female in the UK, and I have been suffering with a painful burning sensation which I believe to be coming from my urethra since September 2014. The pain comes and goes throughout the day, and it will be at its most intense after having urinated, and after sex. At its worst I struggle to walk. The need to urinate has increased but there is no difficulty in going, though I do now most often have two streams when urinating which sometimes will stop and start. On multiple occasions there has also been thick blood in my urine too.

No UTIs have ever shown up on the paper dip test at my local GPs, though I have had UTIs in the past. I have tested negative to all STDs. I have had ultrasound scans which have shown nothing abnormal. I have had numerous internal examinations by doctors and one by a Gynaecologist, all have said everything looks normal and healthy.

My GP has had me try at least 6 different types of antibiotics but none have had any effect on me, except for Cefalexin which I took once a day for 28 days, the pain felt lifted and sex was possible again, but 3-4 days after having finished my course I was back to how I was before them.

I drink plenty of fluids (including cranberry juice) and eat healthy, I don't drink alcohol, smoke, or take drugs. All pain killers have very little effect on the pain, only a hot water bottle sat between my thighs brings any relief. Taking cranberry capsules, and/or cystitis relief sachets has had no effect.

I am about ready to give up on my local GP, its doctors and the NHS, no matter how many appointments I make and attend no progress is ever made, no tests are ever taken and my request to be referred to a Urologist has been repeatedly turned down, I am only ever told to drink more water and to try a new antibiotic, which I pay for each time, no one seems willing to search and to find out what is causing the pain. Affording to go private is a problem for me though, and so I just hope there is someone out there who can relate to me and give me guidance/knowledge on what to do.

This pain is now negatively affecting all aspects of my life.

hi i can understand your pain.

i am a 49 year ols women who has been suffering with the same problem for 9'years. i have has antibiotics after antibiotics ans nothing worked, i had all these tests ans nothing showed up, like yourself i tried everything but no change. in february this year i had water retention which meant i wanted to go for a pee but nothing was coming out so ended up in A&E, i had to have a cathater inserted (god it was painful) ok once it was in and started draining urine. i had to keep it in for 10 days due to no appointment being available, though i was told i only had to have it in for 3 days. After having the catheter removed when i peed for the first time it was amazing pain free, however that day i was on the toilet every half hr, things slowly got better. i had a bladder scan which showed some abnormality so am going for a cystoscopy on friday. the horrible thing is that all my symtoms have come back after 6 weeks of being normal. the urologist told me it coukd be narrowing of urethrea which is causing pain and burning. try pushing your doctor to give you a referral to see a urologist its very important you see one.

i hope you can resolve this keep me up to date.

I bet you have what I have, I have Interstitial cystitis or called painful bladder syndrome. I've had it since I was very young but growing up I always thought it was a UTI which if you go to the doctor for the pain they will almost always tell you that it's a UTI but it isn't, it took me finding a good gynecologist and urologist to figure out why I was always in pain. They explained that I basically have holes in the lining of my bladder so whenever you eat or drink certain things it'll cause pain. If I still had the paper for the best diet I say more about it but you really wanna stay away from citric acid, the best way I've looked at it was whatever would hurt to put on a cut on your hand would hurt that to. So sadly for some pain to go away you wanna watch what you eat or drink but the best way to not have as much pain is learn to relax. The more you stress over things or tense the more pain you feel. I've also figured out for me personally before and after my period I get a good amount of pain no matter what. I think working out could help with it possibly but Idk just yet.
