Painful Burning Sensation In Urethra - No Uti Or Std - Female

Posted , 141 users are following.

I am a 21 year old female in the UK, and I have been suffering with a painful burning sensation which I believe to be coming from my urethra since September 2014. The pain comes and goes throughout the day, and it will be at its most intense after having urinated, and after sex. At its worst I struggle to walk. The need to urinate has increased but there is no difficulty in going, though I do now most often have two streams when urinating which sometimes will stop and start. On multiple occasions there has also been thick blood in my urine too.

No UTIs have ever shown up on the paper dip test at my local GPs, though I have had UTIs in the past. I have tested negative to all STDs. I have had ultrasound scans which have shown nothing abnormal. I have had numerous internal examinations by doctors and one by a Gynaecologist, all have said everything looks normal and healthy.

My GP has had me try at least 6 different types of antibiotics but none have had any effect on me, except for Cefalexin which I took once a day for 28 days, the pain felt lifted and sex was possible again, but 3-4 days after having finished my course I was back to how I was before them.

I drink plenty of fluids (including cranberry juice) and eat healthy, I don't drink alcohol, smoke, or take drugs. All pain killers have very little effect on the pain, only a hot water bottle sat between my thighs brings any relief. Taking cranberry capsules, and/or cystitis relief sachets has had no effect.

I am about ready to give up on my local GP, its doctors and the NHS, no matter how many appointments I make and attend no progress is ever made, no tests are ever taken and my request to be referred to a Urologist has been repeatedly turned down, I am only ever told to drink more water and to try a new antibiotic, which I pay for each time, no one seems willing to search and to find out what is causing the pain. Affording to go private is a problem for me though, and so I just hope there is someone out there who can relate to me and give me guidance/knowledge on what to do.

This pain is now negatively affecting all aspects of my life.

Hi there, I too am suffering from the same symptoms. I'm 22 and been suffering for over 2 years. Had a cystoscopy which showed nothing, also a ultrasound on my pelvis and bladder. I've seen many gynecologist and urologists and nothing. The only thing that seems to take the pain away are the powder sachets you can get for cystitis. So I think I have IC but surely this would have showed on the cystoscopy? ? rolleyes

Sounds the same as me started in April, more discomfort than pain like a burning sensation which comes and goes. I've had ultra sound and due to have cystoscopy in order to stretch uretha. Probably a waste of time, I'm beginning to think it may be either diet or stress related somehow as can go a couple of weeks with no probs then flares up.

Mine seems to be stress related aswell! I've also tried keeping a food diary to see if different food affects it, but I'm getting no where. At first I thought bread and wheat products made it worse so I'm on gluten free bread and cereal but the pain still just comes and goes, there doesn't seem to be a pattern rolleyes

hi . I can empathise with you as I get the same problem. however mine usually clears with a course of antibiotics. I do have bladder problems myself. I have many cystoscopies in the past and found to have diverticulums in my bladder which are little pockets. I have recently had the burning sensation in my urethra and spoke to my gp who after some confusion with the reception on the desk, prescribed me a short course of antibiotics. I had not long finished a course of antibiotics s my gp dipped my urine when I had an appointment 2 weeks previous and it showed up an infection. when the results of msu came back it showed mixed growth which indicates there was more than I bacteria present. the need to urinate frequently and hardly passing any is a nightmare as it gets extremely uncomfortable and prevents me from sleeping. I like yourself have to put a heated wheat ie bag between my legs to soothe. I've tried over the counter medication and it hasn't worked. I try and drink as much as I can't but not passing enough. you need to demand that your gp refer you to see a urologist. I started seeing one 20 odd years ago and have been re-referred since then . they recommended I self catheterise 4 times a day to empty my bladder. I did this for some time then stopped as I didn't feel it was right solution. I'm only 54 and don't want to keep doing this all my life. like I said keep mithering your gp as you have every right to be referred to see a urologist especially if this isn't getting any better. I've even had my urethra stretched when they've done the cystoscopies. Sorry this is so long winded but I truly know how you feel.

Hi Petal P. I read your post and I am going through the exact same thing. It's been over a year since you posted on this site, but hopefully you will receive a notification for my response and can follow up with me. Did you ever find out what the cause was for your ailment? I'm going through all the same motions you did a year ago, but the doctor close to a dead end. If you could share with me what you discovered, maybe that will shine some light on my circumstance and I can move forward with a treatment. Thank you for taking the time to share this, I felt like the only woman in the world going through this crap. No seemed to know what the heck to do. Your message gave me hope, that if there is someone else going through the same thing, a doctor somewhere will give this ailment the attention it deserves and figure out a treatment once and for all. Take care.

I got my symptoms when I was 17 after getting a UTI, I had blood and white blood cells in my urine when I had the infection I was given two courses of antibiotics and they tested my urine, it was clear after these antibiotics but I still had symptoms of burning after I had had a wee. They then sent me for an sti check which came back all clear, they then gave me cream for thrush and other infections which was no help at all, I then went back and they had done loads of blood tests checking me for diabetes and celiac disease and many more...all negative. Then they gave me a drug called Buscapan which was a muscle relaxer which made the symptoms worse and caused nausea etc so that was stopped. He then referred me to a gyny who did a scan, I had a stiff and tilted uterus but bladder and kidneys normal! So they then sent me to see their best urologist, he told me he wanted to do a cystoscopy and a urethral dilitation under general anaesthetic, nothing abnormal was found from the cystoscopy so no chances of interstitial cystitis but my urethra was quite tight, however after initial relief the symptoms came back in less than three days. I'm only 18 and I'm just about to go off to uni it is an absolute nightmare and hurts mainly after sex and after weeing in general. I am booked in for a follow up appointment at the end of this month and am not looking forward to more tests. However i read about changing your toilet paper and shower gels, I'm going to try it as when I go for a wee in the morning I feel no pain but then it gets worse throughout the day like it is getting irritated by something. I've also heard about a disorder called vulvadynia which we could look into also. Have you tried any of these methods? I don't drink tea or coffee and I don't drink alcohol or smoke etc, other than this problem I am a healthy individual!

I am becoming desperate to find a solution for this horrible problem I am having, its been nearly a year now and I'm worried it is going to continue. If you find any relief from using and trying something new please let me know and anyone else who reads this!

I hope you all solve your problems

Sounds like me when I was young. I was living with it for years. Then recently it got worse. Saw a urogynecologist and she discovered I had interstitial cystitis. Not totally convinced this was it the whole time, especially since when I first developed symptoms years ago the doctor checked for this and came back empty handed. I have been reading up on tons of different things it could be. Bladder or Urethral Prolapse, Urethral Diverticulum, Chlamydia, or other bladder and urethral related issues. I recommend seeing a urogynecologist. They know all there is to know about the female parts. Urologists don't know jack, especially the men. I know that seems sexist but take it from me, I saw 4 urologists and they didn't help me. Someone recommended I see a female UROGYNECOLOGIST who specializes in EVERYTHING down there. Whaddya know, I made progress so far!! I am still working through some things though. I will post more when I get further in my progress. Also, check your urine for crystals. If you are a "farmer" for producing kidney stones, you might be peeing crystals. Even though they are small, they could be causing extreme issues, hence the pain. All theories but worth a shot to look into.

Thankyou so much! Hopefully I don't develop IC as I've heard it's very painful and life changing sad I've also heard about a urogynecologist so i will look into getting a referral to one of those! Good luck with everything you're going through x

Hello, I have the exact problem and it's awful! My daughter is an Internal Medicine MD and a Gereactric MD and has sent me to a urologist for overactive bladder symptoms but this was before the constant burning as if I had a constant UTI but I got over one and tested negative and still have the symptoms.  For me the Azo or Uristat pills (that turn your pee orange really help the pain but I have been using every day until my next appointment with urologist in Oct or sooner if I can change it,  Ill let you

know.  My daughter said he should do a (big word) for camera in the urethra next.  He gave me a sheet to do pelvic floor exercise with physical therapist, change diet to avoid citrus, caffeine, coke, pepsi,(sun tea is OK) milk, dairy in excess, cranberry juice can worsen because of acidicy, honey, corn syrup, vinegar, cheese, (hard or soft brie type) alchohol, spicy foods.tomatoes. then if that doesn't help there is customized medication regimen (2-4 weeks) then reevaluate.  These are his conservative treatments If not improved he does a peripheral neuromodulation treatment 12 weeks or simple nerve test in office 2-4 days, interstim therapy 4-5 years, or botox in bladder lasts 6 to 9 months. This info is just for overactive bladder but just thought some of it may help.  Ill let you know what I find out about the new burning mystery problem.  Im in California, U.S. thanks leigh

Try D-Mannose powder. It's a life saver. Take a minute and read up on it.

Hi, all...I can't believe I've found you all!!  After years of pain and not knowing anybody with the same symptoms, here you all are!!  My problems started about 4 or 5 years ago.  I was treated for cystitis and that went on unsuccessfully for a couple of years until I had surgery to widen my urethra.  That didn't work either.  Along the way, I discovered that alcohol was an important factor.  If I drank even a mouthful of alcohol, the pain would start.  But if I kept on drinking the pain would go.  I then put two and two together and realised that the alcohol was relaxing me.  One highly distressing and emotional drive home (a four hour journey) from my sister's house, I was in excruciating pain.  I had my children in the car and I drove whilst crying and screaming in pain.  They didn't know what to do.  In the end, I knew I had to calm down and we stopped at a cafe so I could use the toilet.  For the rest of the journey, I really thought about the pain, when it happened, why the alcohol worked, why sometimes sitting on the toilet eased off the pain.  So, I tried a muscle relaxation technique, focussing on the urethral area (as if I was on the loo).  And it worked!  After that, I did it all the time.  The problem is, after a year or so, I found it harder ti get rid of and am now on Vesicare, which helps relax the bladder muscles.  It doesn't work all the time, but does seem to help a bit.  I get pain breakthrough where its too far gone to relax and at times it is unbearable.  Two things work when it is like that - either getting drunk (which I actually hate doing) or putting a vibrator between my legs (sometimes its the only way I can get to sleep). Funnily enough I read somewhere that in America, they treat painful bladder syndrome with a Tens Machine, which I suppose the vibrator mimics.  But, of course, neither of those techniques are possible when I'm at work lol!!  I have also cut out alcohol (unless I'm desperate), caffeine, artificial sweeteners and tomatoes.  I will also try some of your teachniques...anything to try and help.  And I hope you try mine, if it helps even one of you, I'll be over the moon!

Echinacea/Goldenseal did it for me.  Taking tablets orally helped but what really did the trick is catherizing with a bit mixed with water really did the trick.
