Painful Burning Sensation In Urethra - No Uti Or Std - Female

Posted , 141 users are following.

I am a 21 year old female in the UK, and I have been suffering with a painful burning sensation which I believe to be coming from my urethra since September 2014. The pain comes and goes throughout the day, and it will be at its most intense after having urinated, and after sex. At its worst I struggle to walk. The need to urinate has increased but there is no difficulty in going, though I do now most often have two streams when urinating which sometimes will stop and start. On multiple occasions there has also been thick blood in my urine too.

No UTIs have ever shown up on the paper dip test at my local GPs, though I have had UTIs in the past. I have tested negative to all STDs. I have had ultrasound scans which have shown nothing abnormal. I have had numerous internal examinations by doctors and one by a Gynaecologist, all have said everything looks normal and healthy.

My GP has had me try at least 6 different types of antibiotics but none have had any effect on me, except for Cefalexin which I took once a day for 28 days, the pain felt lifted and sex was possible again, but 3-4 days after having finished my course I was back to how I was before them.

I drink plenty of fluids (including cranberry juice) and eat healthy, I don't drink alcohol, smoke, or take drugs. All pain killers have very little effect on the pain, only a hot water bottle sat between my thighs brings any relief. Taking cranberry capsules, and/or cystitis relief sachets has had no effect.

I am about ready to give up on my local GP, its doctors and the NHS, no matter how many appointments I make and attend no progress is ever made, no tests are ever taken and my request to be referred to a Urologist has been repeatedly turned down, I am only ever told to drink more water and to try a new antibiotic, which I pay for each time, no one seems willing to search and to find out what is causing the pain. Affording to go private is a problem for me though, and so I just hope there is someone out there who can relate to me and give me guidance/knowledge on what to do.

This pain is now negatively affecting all aspects of my life.

Hi. Just seen this post. Im 23

I have the same problems as you. I have been told i have a UTI. Certain days im suffering so bad when i go to the toilet. It hurts that much to the point where its just making me so upset its brimming my self esteem down and i just feel so low. Im clear of everything too, ive done numerous pee samples, swabs, blood tests, different courses of antibiotics, creams, internal tablets etc etc. I dont seem to be getting anywhere with my drs either which is very frustrating.

One dr told me i was lack of oestrogen as i explained it felt dry down below sometime. Ive been on this cream (ovestin, estriol) for 3 weeks now and i must say its helping a little bit. Not experienced the burning sensation for a good few weeks now. Although i dont want to speak to soon.

My life just seems to be on hold and im constantly thinking about it, wondering if its going to come on, the pain is sometimes unbearable.

    I hope your sorted.

      Hello.

Sorry to hear your dealing with the same problem.

Im not suffering so bad anymore, not as i used to anyway.. its been just over a month and not experienced anything but..... i came on my monthly cycle 3 days ago and that night before i did i suffered really bad. Its always a few days before my period. The last doctor did say it was my hormones but i just couldnt believe it at the time. I havent been back since receiving my last prescription which was the oviston-Estriol cream. Which was prescribed to me due to lack of oestrogen.

I feel happier in myself.. i dont worry anymore whether its going to come or etc.

When does your pain usually occur?

      Hannah x

have you  checked out interesticial cystitus, which causes pain and burning, and cant be seen in urine samples, being its not bacteria, but inflammation of bladder or urethra, it needs cystascope to diagnose it, urologists do them.   The c.o.b site gives more info on bladder urethra probs, best wishes

I can give you a name of a Prof who they tried to shut down even though he is aware of the problem and uses targetted antibiotics .However his patients and students campaigned and he is now open again .He can't work holistically but he  will keep your kidneys clear especially if you have a disability found regarding this that is low priority ie spina bifida occulta neurogenic bladder double rather than single ureters .Please message as if you leave these problems they can lead to sepsis [pyuria on dip sticks] Unfortunately all the good Specialists recomended deal with men?

I had the same thing happening after ten months of searching I was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis. Get a urologist and ask them about that and about treatments

Hi PetalP, i think you need to see a urologist immediately. I had the exact same problem and I ended up in the hospital with excruciating pain because I had a kidney stone. If it's not taken care of it will only get worse. The second time I had this same problem I did not have a kidney stone but was taking large amounts of Vitamin C. My urologist told me to stop as it could irritate my bladder. When I stopped the high doses if Vit C the pain went away.

    Hi There:

I to am experiencing the same symptoms - this since I had surgery in June of this year and they used a cath hose and bag - for 5 months the doc's have been treating me for a UTI - when all they should have done was look at my test results and they to would have seen there were problems and they were not UTI Problems!! They have not diagnosed me yet, but I am praying they do so soon - They have finally refered me to see a Urologist - Praying they find something and this pain goes away - I can't stand it - and having to work sucks when you have pain like this.   I hope I find something with your symptoms that might help my symptons - Good Luck to you

Although your cultures came back negative, does not mean there isn't an infection. For example mycoplasma does not show on a routine culture. Suggest try zithromax for mycoplasma and Flagyl for paracites, this is often a good coverage for pelvic imflamatory disease, which is how I would categorize your condition

interesting, with i.c, it is inflammation, pin point hemmoraging shrinkage but no bacteria found in samples, speculation is its allergic response to something in envoirament or auto immune, still dont agree in research, and in more recent times some researcher think there is bateria deepi in bladder wall, that doesnt show on samples, including biopsy, think why they research treating patients with anti bs as preventative used daily for months or years, research showed women on the anti b had  less flare up, whilst those on placebo,s had as many flare ups.So many things still a  mystery. a couple of years ago l started with a very inflamed spreading rash on back on my hand, had xrays, different ointments, 2 biopsies done be a professor, no reason found on biopsy, speculation it was psoraisis. didnt improve. one dr eventually mentioned tropical fish, l said l did have them, leading to diagnoses of myca marinas bacterium found in tropical waters, some fish carry it in ttropical regions. so long course of anti bs cleared it, actually left a white patch of dead tissue where it was, So its also about what individual drs dont know about, chance getting right doctor to think about it, l think too many now dont study enough, or listen to patient, its a 1,2,3 routine and blood test. some think outside the box as they say.  So your advice sounds good.
