Panic attacks

Recently diagnosed after a summer from hell.  Lost 30 pounds from an already thin frame and horrible panic attacks even though a 46 year old with no history and a great life.  Doc thinks it may be because the stomache pain makes me hyperventilate    Anyone else with this issue

Hi Travis. This illness can change Ur life. I'm not surprised Uve got panic attacks! They may subside or if not u need to breathe deeply when u get them so u don't hyperventilate. Mindfulness might help you. Take care

Exactly the same thing. No history of any anxiety, depression, panic attacks then bam out of the blue! After a year of being told it was panic attacks diagnosed with diverticulitis. Recurring episodes always presented with panic attack symptoms as well as intestinal symptoms! My GI guy says it’s common for folks with diverticulitis to have symptoms of panic attacks. I take .5 mg Ativan when the symptoms occur which is only when I am having a recurrence of diverticulitis.

According to my GI the symptoms that mimic what is often mistaken for a panic attack is a systemic reaction to the inflammation and infection that some experience.

Thankfully I haven't suffered that . It certainly changed my life . I was diagnosed in may . I needed the weight loss , so that is the only plus side of having this . I have had pain everyday since may . I am seeing the consultant again in Dec as I have changed everything and it's still bloody painful . I really hope your condition improves . This forum is very good for advice . 😁X

Hi Travis, I had a flare up in September, I started to getting anxiety, insomnia, rapid heart rate, shakiness. After 3 trips to the ER I went to a Dr. who ran some stool and urine test and found out my stomach was inflamed.  The normal range is 50, I was at 698.  I'am currently on a special noninflammatory diet and supplements.  My anxiety is getting better everyday, I can say almost back to normal.  I now know if you take any kinds of antibiotics you have to take a good probiotic. Hope you feel better soon!

May I ask how they tested your stomach for inflammation?  And what other supplements are you taking. I currently takenprobitocs and a digestive enzyme (which helps break down food that you eat). Thank you.

Same with me I have history of diverticulitis but they can't figure out what's going on now. Every night I'm awakened around 230am and the stomach pains start and then anxiety starts. Like you at my wits end. I have no life basically home bound. All my tests are negative the weight keeps off and constant nausea. Starting zofran to try and help.

      Hi all

I've had two flare ups last year and currently going through one now.  Had colonoscopy earlier this month which confirmed DD (mild).

I also get woken up in the middle of the night with either severe pain and/or severe nausea.  Thought I was going to throw up last night and the night before had an hour of pain which prompted me to go to out of hours GP yesterday.  Have been prescribed Metronidazole (500mg) and am a bit concerned now as on both flare ups previously I was also prescribed amoxicillin but not this time.  Regret not questioning this with the GP now but GPs apparently know best....

I think it's common Travis. I too have been diagnosed with severe diverticulosis. Unfortunately the scarring has narrowed part of the sigmoid and I'm having terrible problems opening my bowels. I was so traumatised from the colonoscopy pain as the sedative didn't work my blood pressure is through the roof now and I have a natural low 90/60 blood pressure. I'm depressed and anxious and have panic attacks. I've had no advice from the hospital of what to eat, what to take or anything. I feel very abandoned. I guess they will have to remove part of my bowel eventually. Can't go to the toilet at all which is worrying.

I live in Orpington,Kent. I've never seen an GI, apart from the guy who carried out the colonoscopy! My GP sent me straight to the colonoscopy so haven't had a chance to discuss it with anyone. Now had package in post this morning from hospital, got to have a CT Virtual Colonoscopy on 29th. I'm petrified the pain will be as severe as the colonoscopy.

Travis, I can't believe I found this forum. I've had diverticulitis since 2012 with flare ups here and there. Last year, like you, I went thru hell with internal tremors, shaking, nausea, unable to eat, lost 20 lbs (I am a petite woman already),  urinary tract infections, panic attacks with uncontrollable crying and depression. This was out of nowhere! I spent over 2000.00 seeking help from specialists. My doc sent me to a psychiatrist and he put me on Zoloft. It stopped the panic attacks but I still suffered from some anxiety and depression with early morning adrenal like surges. It was a year of hell!  Fast forward to this year. A few weeks ago I got hit again with sever diverticulitis, was in hospital for 9 days! They treated me with antibiotics. I seriaouly thought i was on a die. One night i literally got on my knees on the hospital floor and i prayed to God to help me. That's how bad i got. However on the 2nd day there at hospital I refused my Zoloft bcuz I felt fine mentally. I wasn't feeling depressed or anxious anymore. I am home now and awaiting a colonscopy next month and after that a resection surgery to cut part of my infected intestine. It's been difficult to figure out what to eat as every doc has a different answer. Just a few days ago I started getting my anxiety again as if I may need Zoloft. I don't want to go down that road again as it has its side effects. I am fighting it with all my might right now but I cannot help to think that this diverticulitis is totally connected to these panic attacks. I am hoping that when they do the resection surgery, this will rid me of these anxiety surges, and depression. Travis, I hope my story finds you in good health and that you are on your road to recovery. I wouldn't wish this on my worse enemy.  How are you doing now?

After my resection surgery, it was a difficult recovery for me; tenderness and pain that i alleviated with only tylenol bcuz i dont like taking meds . They removed about 7 inches from my large intestine. I had some bleeding in my stool afterwards but it went away after about two months. The surgery was a success and i would recommend it if you are in pain. Also i can eat pretty much everything i want but with some trepidation on eating anything with seeds and too much fat. (PS: my story prior to this had nothing to do with my diverticulitis either . It was another medical issue and I have gotten that fixed.) Good luck to you .
