Panic symptoms before bowel movement

Hi there
For a couple of years now I have been having a very strange happen to me, it used to happen occasionally but now it is every time I go for a bowel movement.
I will be happily going about my business or working or whatever when suddenly out of the blue I get this horrible feeling which is hard to describe, like a sinking feeling or impending doom. My fingers go tingly, I have difficulty breathing, shaky, fast heart rate...and then I need a bowel movement immediately. If I go I start to feel better after while, if for whatever reason I can't go right away it feels as if I will die.
anybody else with anything similar?

I was searching for a thread just like this and no it is not some mental health concern or anything related to pooing in public or the anxiety caused from that therein; nor is it a response to any kind of phobia.
I've dealing with the same issue myself for the past several years (im 43) and it is a impending feeling of doom or dread and can feel like you are about to die.
Often at times -in my opinion- I believe we cannot even fathom that we have to BM due to distractions, albeit we're busy at the moment from work or during activity or as a gentleman suggested, on a long drive or just thinking about something entirely.
I'm relieved to find other people who feel the exact same way. I thought I was losing my mind or at the very least there was a deeper underlying issue.
Several years ago I began to moderate my alcohol intake, I quit smoking cigarettes and recently after 25 years I have stopped smoking, marijuana and consuming THC products.
This has led to an all new discovery of my physiological responses.
in other words: know thyself.
I hope this helps and everyone here can get a hold of their BM's by making sure you stay regular, whether it's through diet or exercise or moderation in coffee/caffeine, you will eventually find yourself again.
However further research is always suggested as I wish you luck and success with your future endeavors, cheers!

I also started to experience these symptoms which can happen out of the blue or after a small meal, especially dense drink such as Boost. I do suffer from Crohns disease but this seems to be entirely separate. i experience a "fullness" in the mid abdomen sometimes with cramping which is uncomfortable. Then some anxiousness sets in and my heart rate starts to increase, sometimes up to 160-170 bpm which is very disturbing. I've been on metoprolol (beta blocker) for 30 years but it doesn't seem to control the heart rate. is anyone else experiencing these types of symptoms and how do you cope with it? Than you, Robert

wow, im so happy to have found this. 32 female and started experiencing this this week. its been consistent with having to have a bowel. ive gone to the ER twice because of heart palpitations associated with this. I have had Ekgs and testing done that shows normal which results in everyone saying anxiety and ibs. the recommendation has been to take fiber and stress relief. I am also getting a few extra heart tests done its getting so exhausted having this attacks.
my mind is all over the place trying to figure out what it could be. One of my millions of thoughts are are the vaccines. curious, have you ladies had them too?

I'm not sure if my message posted last night or night so I may be reposting. I'm so happy i found this page. it means I'm not alone. im 32 female and been having this same issue the past two weeks. I've been to the ER a few times due to heart palpitations and change in stool. I honestly cant tell what comes first but its all at once. trembling, doom for no reason, heart palpitations, have to go for BM. its exhausting. ER doctors say to take fiber and work on anxiety. Ekg shows normal. it happens so random that it doesn't make sense to be anxiety. a part of me does wonder if something odd is happening with my vagal nerve. my stools have been off too. i feel desperate in finding and answer and solution. I noticed that these posts seem to be from 2020 on. it makes me wonder if it has anything to do with the vaccine or the virus itself? did you ladies have the vaccine? i did. I've been feeling off with my hormones and gut for two years now but this part has just started.

Hi Stephanie,
Sorry you are going through this too, it's really horrible isn't it?
I have not had the vaccine, and I have had Covid a couple of times but this started for me 1 or 2 years before, so in my case not related to that.
I am well into perimenopause so I've sometimes wondered if hormones might play a part, but a) only when I poop? and b) some of the people who have the same symptoms are men.
I'm keeping this thread as alive as possible in the hope that some day someone will come along with an answer and a solution xx

hi, coming from helathunlocked. just posting here as well to keep up with the thread, I have the same issue . had another attack of it last night and must have had 10+ bowel movements... I lost count . Am better this morning but still a bit shaken and fearful about it in case it comes back. I tried some vagus nerve stimulation techniques last night and seems to relax me a little bit , but in reality only thing that makes is stop is if I am done with the frequent bowel movements. I hate this so much, it really took the joy out of everything and am currently sitting here staring at walls not enjoying any of my usual hobbies or interests...

Hello,
That's it, it's horrible when it happens but it also makes you fearful of when it might hit again.
For me it has become really life-limiting, because I have had some really scary experiences so this has made me avoid a lot of situations for fear of it happening. I now only drive short distances, I have limited social outings, etc, etc.
I'm having an endoscopy and colonoscopy this Friday, see if that shows anything.
I will come back to post any findings x
