I had a thr 3 years ago and has been brilliant.

Then on the 6th May my 97 year old mother who lives independently, had a fall and suffered a fractured hip and was given a partial hip replacement. She was in our main hospital for a week and then transfered to a small rehabilitation hospital where her progress has been very good. She's walking with support and hopefully going home next week. Social services have put a programme in place to give her a carer 3 times a day for 2 or 3 weeks. They're also providing her with a lock safe and life line.

I've noticed a difference between how she's been told to look after her hip and what I was told. I suppose it depends on what part of the hip she's had replaced. I think it was the stem so she didn't need to worry about dislocation.

i had a posterior PHR three months ago as a result of slipping on the ice and breaking my hip

Prior to this, i had been very active, exercising nearly every day i expected my recovery to go fast since i was in good shape. however, I am still experiencing a lot of pain . At first, my pain was most intense in my groin. Now that has lessened, and my pain is more in my thigh. While moving around, I sometimes experience a shooting pain in my hip

I haven't seen my doctor since my two-week checkup, due to the virus I am seeing him in three weeks.i have lots of questions for him:How long should i expect to have pain; should I try to walk--say a mile each day--even though it is very painful to do so; and can i go back to exercise practices, such as yoga and strength building in other words, if it hurts, should I keep doing it? I am a senior and do nothing very impactful, but still?

Hi Nancy. Was your PHR cemented?I'm 66 yrs old n was a very active person. I live alone n did all my chores inside as well as out outside n afraid I won't be able to carry on as before n exercised.

I'm 4 months post op....I can walk but with a limp so I mostly walk with a cane but I do practice walking without it. When I walk I do get alot of groin pain n stiffness n different sharp pains...Other than from walking n exercising I dont have pain.

My therapist said walk but if you start feeling too much pain to stop.

Are you walking with a cane?

      Are you following precautions?

I was told that I no longer have to follow hip precautions, so no on that.

I am not able to walk unassisted, so use a walker or caneYesterday and today, I was on my feet for about two hours each doing weed pulling and rose pruning. Both days left me with a lot of painI'm still taking pain meds .Like you, I have always done all my inside and outside workI Have hired a neighbor boy to help this summer with the mowing and gardens. I'm pretty discouraged .

Was your surgery cemented like mine?

      Was surgeon from San Antonio?

What part did you break? Mine was the ball part that goes into the socket.

So I wonder why mine told me my precautions were forever n devastated me!

Do you bend down to put shoes on?

Did you use the reacher to put clothes on n raised potty?

That is very good that you were able to be outside n be on your feet for 2 hrs!

      That's great.

I think you are going to do great!

      Please respond soon.

Hi Celcilia, Since you had trouble w my email address, why don't we start with yours

I'm recovering at my son's house....so I walk around inside....I started walking without my cane 3 days ago.

I just finished walking for 20 minutes n now resting bc it caused pain. I also wonder when I will be back to normal.

Now I've been having shortness of breath n worry it might be a PE.

I'm determined to go home next week so this week I'm getting some stuff that will help me be safe at home.

I bought a bath rail.....grab bar.....a longer reacher....I'm very nervous about going back home n getting everything done myself....ex. taking trash out n hauling trash can out.....I'm afraid to fall bc I'm not sturdy enough.

Do you still use a bath chair to get in n out?...n a reacher to dress?

I had a half hip replacement three years ago and I remember after the operation I had very similar symptoms to yours. I had very bad groin pain and was given an MRI. It showed inflammation and I was going to get a steroid injection into the tendon but was told that it probably wouldn’t be successful so I was prescribed some muscle relaxants and the pain stopped. I went on this site three years ago after my operation but couldn’t find anybody else who had had a partial hip replacement. Do you know why your surgeon opted to do that rather than give you a full hip replacement? And I am curious as to how long he said the operation would last. Can't believe that Cecilia's surgeon said 8 to 10 years! I'm planning on living longer than that. it took me about a year to recover fully but I am now completely pain-free. Please update me on what your surgeon says about exercise. What should we do/not do to prevent wearing hip out. etc

Hi Carol, I am 3 1/2 months post opMy PHR was the result of a fall. The surgeon replaced everything but the socket.

I was starting to feel a little better yesterday and did some exercises, including squats and bridge lifts. Then I got down on my hands and knees and planted a flat of annuals. This morning I could barely walk with my cane and had to back to my walker, because of the intensity of the pain in my groinI do plan on getting an MRI when I see my surgeon next Wednesday . I am taking muscle relaxants, so I don't know what else he will suggest.

I have set up Zoom classes with my Pilates instructor. Now I am thinking that I will need to put that on hold .

I am glad to hear that the pain eventually goes away

Carol, was your surgery a result of a fall,?Overall, were you satisfied with your surgeon?

I've heard that anterior PHR has less pain than posteriorI'm going to ask my surgeon next week why he did posterior.Did he think he would get best results that way, or was it just easier to do.

Thank you for replying to my post. Nancy

Nancy seems like I had another set back....like taking steps forward n then back !. My groin pain is bad...n the front of thigh above my knee feels like it's going to break.

Surgeon actually told me today that everyone with hip surgery have complains that they have to live with!!

Also when I told him I was limping he said that people stay like that....all he does is bring me down !!

I send you my last name on here so you could look me up on fb...n can message there.

Happy! I put in a complaint about my surgeon for doing a half hip replacement without consulting me. Yes it was after a fall. I didn’t pursue the complaint as I don’t want money, I just want them to fix me and I have seen three different surgeons since then all of whom have different opinions! (I'm in Britain.) I think he noted my MS and decided on a short term fix even though i was only 54 . I definitely avoid weight bearing and impact exercise now. I dont do yoga but remember being told that it would be fine. I was referred to a revision specialist after one surgeon thought i would need a revision. Specialst told me he wouldn't do it as the MS would mean i wouldn't be fit enough to keep it in place. That was my worst day. since then, another surgeon has been a bit more optimistic and I've been told to try and strengthen thigh muscles.

The groin pain has gone and I am pain free but I am careful with exercise. You are only 3 months post op, so maybe take it easier for a bit. Please ask your surgeon why he did a partial and how long it's likely to last. I think I can get 15 years out of it but I can't get a straight answer from any of them. I spoke to one chap who kept his for 20 years before a revision! And he was active. I need to stay as active as i can for my general health but am terrified of the pain of wearing the hip out if they can't fix me! Horrible dilemma. I do squats and bridge lifts too so hoping they are okay to do. I was going to check with physio but virus has stopped all appts. Let me know what he says.

Carol how long ago did you have your PHR.....When I have my appt in July it will be my 6 month follow up ....I intend to ask him why use a part that lasts only 8 to 10 yrs like I want to do this again.!!!! I want to be active again!

I am glad you’re going to ask your surgeon about the time the operation should last. If he says 8 to 10 years we are both in serious trouble! Please message his answer as I am hoping it will be more optimistic than that. Good luck with your appointment.
