PCOS, pain and discharge?

Hi, new to this forum.

I'm 24 and got diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome about 2.5 years ago (problems started before this). I started my periods when I was 10 years old and have always been VERY heavy and very painful, they make me very weak and quite poorly.

For the past 3 years I have not had a period 'on my own', I have to take Norethisterone every 3 months for 10 days in order to induce a bleed. Also I have pain in my left lower abdomen. I have had a colonoscopy to rule out problems with bowels. My doctor told me that I should not be experiencing pain with PCOS (??). Recently I have been noticing a very dark brown discharge, I have had this for about a week now. My doctor didn't tell me what this was, just mentioned that's it's all part and parcel of PCOS, I'm wondering what it is?

I should also mention that I experience severe leg/hip/lower back pain (constant pain, ache, numbness and pins and needles) on my left side too, have been for over 6 years now. I may be wrong but I feel as is all this is connected somehow, but my doctor said that this 'probably won't be connected'. I have been to physio and they said there is nothing they could do for my leg, I'm now currently waiting on an X-ray.

Other symptoms I have experienced is bleeding after intercourse, pain deep in stomach during intercourse, aches very similar to period pain but without the periods, nausea and dizziness (sometimes passing out).

I'd just like to find out if anybody else is having these symptoms and perhaps shine some light on this situation?

hi suzi! glad i found your thread. i too started my period young (11 years old) and like yours, always very heavy & painful, learned to put up with it & have been doing fertility treatment for past 8 years approx after years of trying naturally without success. like you i was getting the dark brown clotty discharge & found out i had a cyst in my right ovary &  this discharge was old blood. decided to get the cyst removed & had a laparoscopy year & a half ago. started vomiting on 2nd day of period couple of months before lap.after laparoscopy was told the cyst was removed & they found a little endometriosis which was also removed. but almost immediately afterwards i felt awful, felt like my whole body was infected, became very ill, vomiting, burning hot, feeling like i was going to pass out, told this to the surgeon who said i had a minor urine infection & it was a simple op & i should be fine, wrong! kidney infections, urine infections, throat & ear infections, vomiting dizziness etc, etc. found out surgeon lady lied & hadn't removed the cyst at all & that i had pcos in my left ovary too. i went to a few doctors who said it was anxiety!! since then i have been getting constant urine infections, dizziness & feeling of passing out, heart palpatations,b12 deficency, low iron, the same pain in my hips, legs & tummy( like the period pain without the period), pins & needles in my hands & feet, the back pain etc, all the things you are experiencing. i have also been getting cysts in my breasts & white blood count & prolactin is high. i have now found a very good lady doctor since moving to a new area, who is determined to get to the bottom of it all & find something to help. she has referred me to a gynaecologist &  takes bloods every 2 weeks or so to check my bloods until i see the gynae & see what they say then she said we'll make a plan from there. i hate the passing out thing!! it really freaks me out! your the only one i have found so far who gets this as well.my heart pounds so loud & fast & i can't breath properly, feels like i'm going to pass out, be sick & need the toilet all at the same time, horrible!! i don't feel as bad as i did after the lap but i'm no where near as well as i was, have always been healthy & active, good diet & plenty of excercise. unlike you, i still have regular period & not overweight like typical pcos sufferers.both my doctor & the breast specialist say it's the hormones that's causing it all (not anxiety & stress like other stupid doctors tried to pass it off as!) my advice to you would be to be persistent! i know what you mean with feeling like a hypocondriac but we know our bodies & know when something isn't right & deserve to know & understand what's going on. if your not getting the right answers from your present doctor, then make an appointment for another one, tell them to check all your bloods thoroughly, write down questions you want answering before your appointment & take your list with you, write down blood results & answers so you don't forget. don't be fobbed off! keep asking & be determined to get to the bottom of it! some doctors are useless, some are ok, you need to find the really good one who actually cares & listens & does all the right things! hope this helps in some way, best of luck!

Hi. I was told due to my age that I can't have one yet, as they tend to do them during a smear test?.. That's what worries me the most to be honest, as if there is another problem, as I have been suffering for years, that by the time I am 25 they may have got worse.

I'm actually in pain again today, above my pelvis on the left, feeling pretty weak and a bit shakey. Do you feel the same with the pain you get?

I hope your results come back ok for you, always worse when you're waiting. 4 weeks is also quite long, you should probably get on to them, I've had results lost before now rolleyes. If anything, gives you peace of mind.

go and see another doctor and explain that everytime you have sexual intercourse you bleed and have severe pain and it has been happening along time. that is enough information a doctor needs to refer you for a colposcopy!! it is a serious matter my doctor flipped on me for not going sooner!! i just said i thought it was normal as it was my first boyfriend but she said noo it isnt normal. i have phoned the colposcopy clinic and nothing hs came in yet rolleyes x

I told my doctor that, it's not every time we have intercouse, but I have bled more than a few times after, quite a lot of blood too. I just got sent to the gynecologist and for an ultrasound, it's how they found out I had cysts on my ovaries but that was over two years ago now. I still get the pain in lower abdomen.

I have to wait until I have been for an x-ray (this Thursday) on my pelvis and hip, as I have other problems with my leg. So if something shows up I can then discuss it more with the doctor and get the ball rolling about the PCOS again and I will ask about the colposcopy.

      Finger's crossed for you.

I was recently diagnosis with pcos on right side too. And I notice I was having pain before and after period. I suspect that my pcos was triggle by bcp. I started at aug 2011 and stop at not 2013 as I'm getting married. I question both doc that they said it might be due to my food intake which i think is totally crap. The highest weight I hit is 61kg with my height of 158cm and that was when I am still on mercilon. And I lost my weight when I was on mercilon too.  Anther doc tell me it might be inheritance from mum. My mum give give to my youngest sis at the age of 50+. And 4 sisters done have such problem. When I was on mercilon, I went for a scan as I was having pain. But the scan turns out healthy or maybe they did not scan my ovaries. I was not clear. My sis told me she knew someone have same problem as me. She was healthy but have pcos when she took bcp. And I research online. Some people have same problem as me! And I was thinking since there is warning that bcp still have rare cases that some still get pregnant when they on bcp, could there be a possibility that the bcp are non to strong enough that our ovaries still releasing egg? As bcp is actually stoping the releasing of egg. Another possibility is that the bcp after effect that it still stay in our body therefore our body still confuse that it release egg half way that the bcp are strong therefore the eggs are no mature enough to burst itself so it turns to cyst. Am really confusesad

    Hi suzi1234,

im so glad I've come across this..

i was myself diagnosed with pcos roughly about five years ago due to irregular periods and family members becoming concerned.

over the last couple of months however i have been experiencing horrible severe pains on my left side of stomach it doubles me over in pain, drains me as white as a ghost and then comes along the sickness. I've also been told this is due to the pcos however haven't been prescribed anything all i get told is come back when your ready to start a family and we'll disscus your options.

im however getting the pain more and more frequently and feel so tired all the time, constant mood swings, days off work due to the pain discomfort and sickness its got to the point as to weather or not i go to my local a&e as cant cope with the pain.

    Hello Suzi1234,

I am the same age and was also diagnosed about three years ago. What an emotional roller coaster! One thing I did not see mentioned is a prescription called Metformin. I take Metformin three times a day and my periods are regular and I have been able to maintain my weight with normal exercise and diet. I just recently have had pain during intercourse and have gone to my doctor waiting for an ultrasound but whats nice is that this is the first time of any complications with pain since I had been put on Metformin 2 years ago. One thing I have found that helps the bloating is of course no sodas at all and no carbs after 6pm. Oh and stay away from soy the estrogen found in soy messes up the female system.Yoga may help the pain in your low back because it tightens your core muscles which support your back. I wish you all the luck and hang in there. Also there is a PCOS facebook group that also has a lot of interesting facts and many women are going through the same struggle as us and they have a lot of advice as well smile

    Hi Suzy,

the pain in your back, abdomen and thighs can be caused by the cysts that form. The dark brown discharge is most likely from a cyst that burst instead of being re absorbed back into the tissues. If you had sudden sharp cramps a day or two before the discharge showed I'd wager that a burst cyst is exactly the cause. The cyst was probably a 'chocolate cyst' on account of its coloring. These cysts erupting can cause severe health problems and even death if they go sepsis (rare).  You need to learn a lot more about your illness and I'm rather shocked that all your doctor has done for you is force your period. To control my PCOS I had WLS to loose half my body mass and stop my periods completely using a special form of birth control. I'm going to recommend that you start finding additional information sources (try wiki resources) and support groups (like cysters), pcos doesn't go away, but it can get better and a whole lot worse if not managed.

Are you sure you have PCOS? The symptoms of PCOS and endometriosis are very similar. I knew someone who was diagnosed with endometriosis. When she went to have surgery they discovered it was a really PCOS. Your leg pain sounds very familiar. Either like ovarian pain or sciatica. I realize this thread is quite old now. I'm wondering if you've had any changes in diagnosis?

Hi Suzi, I am just wondering how you were diagnosed with PCOS? I am having avert similar problem. Have been diagnosed with cysts on my ovaries 4 times in the last 3 months. My symptoms are effecting my urine as it's making it difficult to pass urine resulting in me having to catheterise myself to pass urine. I have always had very heavy and painful periods. And this time the cyst is making feel so dizzy I feel like I'm going to pass out and having a stomach ache during intercourse. I was just wandering how long it took you to get a diagnosis? And how they diagnosed? In need of help, seriously getting fed up. Due to see the GP this afternoon.
