Perimenopause and joint pain any suggestions on relieving symptoms?

Im 46 and in the last few months have started getting joint pain. Hips and lower back ache which has gradually got worse. Have made an appointment to see my GP as someone told me it could be the start of the menopause. Has anyone else suffered from this and what did you take to relieve it? I have been taking paracetomol when its gets too bad but sometimes it doesnt relieve the pain at all! Not sure if i should be taking a supplement or not or what i should take!

I thought it might have been osteoarthritis so Ive started taking codliver oil tablets and a supplement of glucosamine, MSM + Chondroitin but not noticed any change and dont know if thats what i should be taking or not. Its all very confusing as there is so much information on the web and so many different supplements available. If it is the start of the menopause I would rather go down the natural route than take HRT.

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

Interestingly I was talking to a work colleague and she told me that her Mother-in-law said she had severe joint pain and hardly any other symptoms when she was going through the menopause!

      Hi Cheryl!

I wonder if the mother-in-law's joint pain went away after she was through menopause. I'd like to know there is some peace afterwards, especially on a day like today where I ache like crazy! Are you able to ask her daugher in law?

Hi Annie, yes she said the joint pain went after she'd finished the menopause! So there is some light at the end of the tunnel :-) I've got my appointment on Tues with my GP and I'm going to discuss this joint pain and tell him what my friend said

Well I had my GP appointment and since I last posted on here I've had an x-ray on my lower back. The result is I have Denegenerative Disc Disease, which is causing my lower back pain and hip joint pain! Its in the lower 3 or 4 discs and I've now been refered for physio.

So its nothing to do with the perimenopause, yet!

I was prescribed Naproxen anti inflammatory which stopped the pain but as soon as I stopped taking it the pain came back! The trouble is I can't take anti inflammatorys long term as they are bad for your stomach. So exercise and normal pain killers like paracetomol are what I've been told to do. The Doctor did say I could take stronger pain killers than paracetamol if the pain was too bad.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what pain killer I could take that is stronger than paracetamol if I need it?

Obviously I'm going to try and manage it with exercise but I don't think it will make me completely pain free.

The joys of ageing! And I've still got the menopause to look forward too aswell! :-(

      Hi Cheryl

Your gp can give you a protective tablet lanzoprazole or omperazole along with naproxen n paracetamol

Cocodamols are good but have knock on effect if you take regular as can constipated you due to the codiene

I've got dengenerative changes in my back n knees dreadful pain at times sad

Hi, Carol my GP didn't give me anything with the Naproxen but my husbands just been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his knees and because of the pain hes in hes been prescribed Naproxen with Omeprazole for a month. I don't know why I wasn't given them

I can't afford to keep paying out for prescriptions though, so I will have to try and manage with exercise and over the counter pain killers.

Awww Cheryl sorry to hear that

Yea it's a lot of money I've ended up getting a prepayment card for a yr due to all the stuff I was given co codamol diazepam lanzoprazole n cream then HRT then vit d n sleeper so cheaper get the prepayment 10 items near enough in a month n the prepayment was £104 so it's a win situation but it's terrible that some peoples health suffers sue to cost of a script sad hope the exercises help you xx

Waiting for an appointment for physio and in the meantime have ordered a memory foam mattress. Went away for a week recently and the bed had a memory foam mattress, noticed my back and hips didn't ache as much! Friends and family that have got one all rave about them and say they're back ache went over night! So I think its definitely worth a try :-)
