Perimenopause and SEVERE joint pain - any one else??

Hi
I am 50 and have been in perimenopause for some time. I just wanted to post here to see if anyone else has suffered extreme joint pain as a result of fluctuating estrogen.
Quick history: regular as clockwork from the age of 13 - up to and after the two pregnancies in my thirties. Then aged 47 I started to get very heavy and irregular periods. Then I went for six months with no period at all, then two very scant light periods in quick succession. I have had nothing now for two months but I do feel as if it might happen soon as sore boobs etc.
I have never had a hot flush. I do however have lots of other peri symptoms, including insomnia, heart palpitations and skipped beats, and a strange 'rushing' or whooshing feeling which starts in the abdomen which I think is an 'adrenal' surge. I also have other vague and odd symptoms, dry eyes and inside my nose, and a really vile taste in my mouth sometimes - I mean really vile, like a chemical taste, unrelated to anything I have eaten. I also have odd tingling skin sometimes, which I can only describe as feeling like 'cold' sunburn!
However, about the joint pain. Three months ago I literally woke up one morning with a sore left arm/elbow. Over a few days, the pain then moved into my shoulders, and I got really worried as if was incredibly painful, and showed no signs of going away, it just got worse and worse. It is worse in the morning when I wake up, I am as stiff as a board. It is on my mind 24/7. Doing normal things is almost impossible - I have problems carrying shopping, drying my hair, walking the dog, driving...everything seems to hurt . I have never suffered from arthritic pain, and I went to the doctor thinking I had some awful bone disease, or even polymyalgia. I was told I had nerve pain!! The GP was terrible and made me feel like a hypochondriac and it was all in my mind. I was told I had good range of movement, and no inflammation. But I am in agony, and i am not imagining it.I made the mistake of asking Dr.Google too, which is never a good idea as I scared myself half to death. I never even thought it could be related to hormones or menopause, as the pain was just SO bad and I had never heard of joint pain being a symptom.I mean I have read than meno can be bad for some women, and I expected hot flushes etc, but I didnt realise it meant pain like this.
Anyway - for the last few weeks I have been having worsening pain which has spread from left elbow and both shoulders, into left hip, both elbows and now my knees. All my joints are cracking and popping loudly and even my husband can hear the awful grating in my neck and my knees....I sound like a one man band as I go up and down the stairs!
I went In for my three yearly Cervical smear on Monday, and could hardly get up on the examining couch I was so stiff and sore. Womans health is dealt with by the Nurse Practitioners in our large practice (15 GP's) and when the NP saw my discomfort she asked me what was wrong. It turns out she has a real interest in womens health, and has been involved in HRT trials and research for many years. She informed me that my symptoms all point to fluctuating estrogen, and possible thyroid involvement. She told me a load of stuff about estrogen and cartilage, dry mucosa etc, the details of which I can't remember now but which made so much sense when she explained it - even down to the foul taste and tingling skin I have also experienced on and off for months which are both known side effects of estrogen surge as the ovaries go a bit haywire. Asmall percentage of women are very receptive to estrogen fluctuations which involve cartilage, which mainly manifest as abnormally severe joint pain/menopausal arthritis but it is not an 'obvious' symptom of perimenopause.
I asked why the GP was no help, and she just raised her eyebrows when I told her which male GP it was, and told me to make another appointment as soon as possible with a specific GP (who must be more knowledgeable about womens health.) Going in tomorrow to see her.
I can't do HRT as I have a heart condition, but maybe I can do estrogen cream, or phytoestrogen/soy.) It could last for a long time I guess until I come out the other side !
So i have not yet been diagnosed, but it sounds like it could be caused by estrogen. Sorry this has been so long....but anyone else out there feel the same way I do???

I was reading some older post and come across yours about the palpitations and strange rushing sensations with feeling faint.
I had a tachycardia ablation a few years ago from having thesse same symptoms and felt so relieved after the surgery...only for them to return again. I'm wondering if alot of these symptoms wasn't my heart but my hormones contributing to my symptoms.
Anyways I was reading you bought menopal plus. Maybe I've missed your update on a recent post about it but was wondering how many years have you been in Perimenopause and is menopal plus helping your symptoms with that strange rushing sensation?
I'd like to try it if its working ....
Thanks a bunch..be blessed!

That 'rushing' sensation of adrenaline is horrible. I used to get it as I was drifting off to sleep, it was like this massive wave, or rush went through me and woke me up fully - my heart would be pounding and it just felt horrible. I wondered if this was actually a hot flush, as I have never had one...but apparently they feel different! I also was incredibly depressed and anxious - morning anxiety was the worst, I would wake up with butterflies in my stomach and an underlying dread for no real reason ....I would just feel uneasy and on edge all day. This is due again to too much adrenaline or cortisol being released by the adrenal glands - its all to do with estrogen fluctuations.
I'm not sure about natural remedies. I have not heard of anyone who really suffers with this hell *really* getting any relief from symptoms. I think we all probably have two choices - tough it out, (now that you know that it IS peri/menopause and it WILL end eventually when you are through it) or, try HRT, which somewomen swear by and gives them their life back. You could have a look at the menopause matters website which is great and gives some really good advice about HRT.
I know what you mean about feeling normal again...sometimes I think my poor husband thinks I have had a personality transplant. I used to be so youthful and fun loving and NORMAL, now I am weepy and irritable and hobbling around like a 90 year old. I cannot wait until I am though it all, I just wish someone would tell me how long it takes but we are all different.
Take care x

Physical aches and pains are suffered by a lot of us as you can see from this thread, and they can be so bad they are almost disabling. Have a look at the menopause matters website to see just how many women are struggling with hormonal issues.
If you want your life back - go on HRT!

It does sound to me like you are suffering from the effects of changed hormones, and imbalances of estrogen, which can cause extreme pain in the joints and other symptoms. However, the fact that you say you are swollen does not fit with this. Usually menopausal arthritis does not show any sort of inflammation. If you have any HEAT or redness or swelling, this is more likely to be another auto immune condition which can be easily controlled with meds.
I f I were you, I would go to the doctor and ask for blood tests, to rule out an inflammatory arthritic condition. If there is NO inflammation in the blood (sedimentary rate, called ESR) then it is pretty likely to be menopausal arthritis, and some of us women get great results from HRT, although we have to come off it one day! I think it is better to have HRT while you are younger, so you can continue a normal pain free life until you would naturally have started the menopause. HRT will also help with the sweats and other symptoms, Anxiety and depression and bi polar tendencies are all known to be linked to peri menopause and hormones.
I did not have swollen, or red or inflamed areas - just extreme stiffness and pain in the tendons over certain areas (biceps, hips, shoulders, knees, neck) and I also suffered with extreme crepitus which is basically the medical term for those cracking popping sounds in neck, knees and elbows. My neck crackling is so loud my husband can hear it. This is due to the changes in your connective tissue and cartilage, and the cushioning stuff that sits between our vertebrae...if you swivel your head slowly, does the base of your neck creak like it needs oiled???This is what happens in ageing normally...but in menopause, in some women the changes to the skeleton, tendons and and muscles are speeded up by lack of essential hormones.
Hope you get some relief from your worries and pain...go back and have a chat with your doc.
best

Just reading your reply to Amanda. What you say is very interesting. I also have the creaking in my neck you describe and have had neck pain and stiffness which affects the left side of my head, shoulder and left arm at times. I am 48 and have been wondering for some time if my problem could be related to hormone fluctuations as no one can find a cause. I draw a blank from the dr each time I mention it but he can offer no better explanation. It is very debilitating and I have had to give up work because of it. Wondering whether to go and try again.
