Persistent Headache.....Jaw and Temple Region?

Ugh...I'm back. I know that perimenopause can cause (or exacerbate) headaches, but I'm on day five of a pretty bad round...the pain seems primarily located in my jaw/temple area, with a band across my forehead....my neck and shoulders feel tense and sore as well...of course, I'm convinced that I've got a brain tumour or am about to have a stroke, but I seem to recall reading that someone (maybe anxiousface) wrote in with a similar complaint about persisent and pretty severe headache....I suspect I'm unconciously clenching my jaw which may be the underlying cause, but I'm still worried....I'm also exhaused as I've not been sleeping well for the last week or so....and my period (if I get one this month) is due to begin any day now....I Googled my symptoms (I know...bad idea!) and now I'm terrified..anyone have any words of wisdom?

Hi. Yes this is my problem too. The same jaw, face head pain. Also neck, back of head and shoulders. It is as you say relentless and so tiring. I have been told that it is muscle pain caused by tight muscles. It is down to anxiety triggered by the vertigo I had 3 yrs ago. I have been told to eliminate as much stress as I can and develop 'coping strategies ' such as meditation and exercise. Mine makes me feel a bit dizzy too because of the tight muscles near the ear. My physio also says that my posture is making the problem worse, it has altered due to the pain. So at the moment she is helping me to try and correct this and I am working on the other things myself. There doesn't seem to be a miracle cure but I'm hoping that the above, combined with a good diet will help me in the long run. Like you I have worried that I have all sorts of things. The specialist said that I clench my jaw without knowing it. He said that I even talk through clenched teeth. Xx

Hi Kitty - have you been to the doctor? if not speak to him/her about you problem & he might send you for some test or scan?

I try & have a massage every few months it really helps with the tension build up in your muscles!

I would say dont worry but that dosnt help, start with the doc! Hugs Barbara

In this case I'm glad I googled my symptoms (usually it just creats more anxiety), because I found this blog post!  I've been having the same awful headache/jawache you've been describing, and last night it turned into a fullblown anxiety attack where my whole body was tense, vibrating, spasming muscles, couldn't sleep...  Ugh!  Pain reliever didn't help, I was too stubborn to take a Xanax like my husband advised (it makes me nervous to take them while on my beta blockers, don't know drug interaction).  Reading these forums always makes me feel just a little less anxious (just knowing there are lots of us ladies out there dealing with the same things makes it less scary), though the tension and pain hasn't subsided yet.  Thinking it's definitely a night for a epsom salt bath and some magnesium tea!

Just read jayneejay's post on the different form of magnesium, will have to check that out.  I've been using magnesium citrate and it does help me relax and sleep better, but if I had a few bouts of tummy trouble and wasn't sure if it was the magnesium or the stress causing it or the fact that I had skipped my probiotic and other vitamins.  Maybe I'll try the magnesium bisglycinate and see if that makes a difference.  Willing to try just about anything if it's natural...  I doo mis the monthly massages I was getting, maybe I'll have to bite the bullet and spend that $ again...

This is a page right out of my book as well.  I have suffered migraines for about 6 years now, but recently they started getting worse and coming more often.  I noticed that instead of my usual migraine, which is in the base of my skull, I was waking up with exactly what you've described..jaw, temples and neck.  I went to my doctor thinking it was a sinus infection, but it wasn't.  I went to Walmart and bought a good mouthguard for bedtime and my doc gave me a prescription for a mild muscle relaxer so I won't clench so much at night.  They both help a LOT.
