PH Testing

Hi, has anyone ever had the PH testing done with regards to acid reflux? Where they put the tube down your nose for 24 hours to monitor how much acid is coming up? Thanks.

My daughter (13) has had this done twice - both times under general anaesthetic - because she was having endoscopes done at the same time.

No problems at all - a bit uncomfortable initially but soon got used to the tubes. No problem eating, sleeping or drinking.

    Hope it goes well.

Hi Alison.  Many thanks for replying.  It something that my gastro dr is looking into as I am still having problems after nearly four months on Lansoprazole and I've had a gastroscopy and it was all clear so think this will be the next thing to look at.  Does it clearly measure how much acid is coming back up?  I am having problems eating now anyway so as long as liquids can get down ok I should be fine.  Just don't like the though of having a tube down my nose!

Hi yes I had one done about a month ago

Its not as bad as it sounds!

It was a little bit uncomfortable to have it put in ( I had a massive sneezing fit).

If you've had a endoscopy? The tube is

Much smaller and you are encouraged to

Drink to help the tube go down. This does

Really help. you can eat and drink as

Normal. You can feel the tube at the back

Of your throat but after a while you sort

Of get used it being there. Sleeping was a

Difficult as the box can get in the way a bit.

    Good luck with it all.

      Hi,

Thanks for replying.  I've had a gastroscopy but I was put to sleep for it as I was that nervous before having it done.  I am having probs eating at the mo becuase of all this reflux anyway so as long as liquids go down I will be fine for 24 hours anyway.  Did you manage to sleep with it being in and did you take the say off work that you had it as I don't fancy walking around with a tube down my nose ha, ha!  Was it worth it with the results did it show that you had acid comeing back up? My gastroscopy was all clear but with me still having probs they are look at other tests that can be done.

      Thanks,

I'm due to have this done in the next couple of weeks, not looking forward to it, I'd be really interested in hearing the views of others who have had it done.

    Hi Amanda,

Are you having manometry test done as well? If so they do manometry first with a slightly bigger nose catheter - then the 24 hr ph catheter is put in afterwards, is smaller and after the manometry - the know exactly where to place it. I was made to drink water through a straw - was very very quick. It's uncomfortable for a few minutes - but then you kind of get used to it. While it's in try to eat slowly and don't try to eat anything too dry - it can pull a little bit when you eat, but as the catheter is taped to your cheek, it can't go anywhere. You will be asked which side you sleep on most - they will tape the catheter to the opposite cheek.

Hope all goes well for you!

      Hi,

I have just been told its the 24 hours ph testing.  I am struggling to eat at the mo anyway this is why they are testing me as the gastroscopy I had done came back all clear and I have been on meds for months now and want to get to the bottom of it all.

What results did it show after you had had the ph testing done, was it worth it to get it all sorted out?

      Thanks for replying.

      Hi Amanda,

They do the test to see if you have acid refluxing into your oesophagus - so they must thing you have an issue there. In my case it did prove I had acid reflux. I needed that result to have my fundoplication op - which I have had now.

      Hi,

Thanks for replying and sorry just getting back to you now.  Yes they have said it must be an acid issue after my gastroscopy was all clear.  I am going to see my Gastro doctor this evening so will see what he says but it will either be a Barium Swallow and/or PH Testing!  How do you feel after the fundoplication op - are you able to eat ok?  My main problem is not being able to have solid foods at the moment and this has gone on for months now.

      Thanks,

      Amanda.

Not particularly pleasant but you get used to it after a couple of hours. I found the worse bit was any sudden head turning/bending down - then you can feel it in your throat

      Hi,

Thanks for replying. I don't realy like the tought of it as I am not very good with things like this and had to be put to sleep after having my camera down as I had it done private in the end!  I wil see how I get on I am back seeing my gastro dr this week and will discuss things with him, just want to get to the bottom of it all or get referred to another specialist to have a look at me.

      Thanks,

      Amanda

Yes I have had it done and the trick as they will tell you is to drink at the same time that the tube goes in, then its easy. To be honest the problem I found was afterwards with certain foods, avoid the bread.

I had it done again a short while ago and this time they left a wireless capsule inside me which was done during the endscopy. Then carried a device around for 48hr and I could eayt what I likd. Nothing really to worry about and its a good measure for them of your reflux

      Hi,

Thanks for replying.  How come you had problems afterwards, was that when it was taken out?

That sounds better with the capsule inside if I knew about that then I would have had that done at the same time i had the camera down done.  I will see what else is on offer but this seems to be the best test to get to the bottom of how much acid is coming back up, otherwise I think I may need an ENT doctor or someone to look into my swallowing!  Just want to get to the bottom of it all.

      Thanks,

      Amanda.

No the problem was as others have said whilst its in as some food doesn't go down too well as you think that it is sticking to the tube, its not of course.

I think you will find this is the only thing on offer. I had my most recent test done privately and the wireless device is great, although you do wonder if it is still inside you, but of course it isn't., well I hope not.

Thanks for this info . I might consider this procedure if all else fails. You are lucky since they left the wireless capsule during endoscopy, like hitting 2 birds with one stone.you need not to go back again and again for each procedure. If I may ask, what is the purpose of the capsule? and what are they trying to achieve when they measure the acid? is it the procedure to determine what type of medicine will or will not work for you or something else.I would like to ask this from someone who had been there.I am very scared of the thought itself.

      Thanks for all your support.

      Hi,

Thanks for replying.  I am under a private hospital at the moment.  What does the wireless device involve?

Thanks for your help and advice.

      Amanda.
