PH Testing

Hi, has anyone ever had the PH testing done with regards to acid reflux? Where they put the tube down your nose for 24 hours to monitor how much acid is coming up? Thanks.

As for sleeping you have to sleep with it in as you can't remove the tube, they do that. I had a box which I hung up by the side of the bed. I think I slept on my back as that felt best.

I work from home so I didn't need to take time off work, but I did go to the supermarket and go about normal stuff. If people stare so wha, don't worry about it, most do and just be grateful that you only have it for 24hrs and its not a condition you have forever which people will stare at.

What it shows is the acid levels so they can tell if you are generating too much. My last test was done while I was on the PPI and that was interesting because it showed that the PPI was keeping my acid normal, I dread to think what it would be without it.

Dont worry you will be fine

The purpose of the capsule is its the modern alternative to having the tube stuck down your nose. Instead they locate the capsule during an edoscopy which monitors the acid and then sends the data to a wireless device. Its an expensive procedure which is why they usually put the tube down your nose because an experienced nurse can do that rather than an expensive doctor.

In my case the reason it was done was because we thought the medication wasn't working. I remained on the PPI and it showed that it was controlling my reflux so the pain I was suffering was not related to reflux and must be casued by something else. The pain was consistent with reflux which is why they explored that route first.

      Hi,

Many thanks for all of the info.  I will see what happens this evening but i think that I need it doing as I am still having problems and it would be interesting to see how much acid is coming back up and maybe find an alternative medication or something that will help me.  I just want to be able to eat normal!

      Thanks again,

      Amanda.

Hi Amanda as it’s a good while since you were on here would you be kind enough to let me know how you got on with the test, I have had an endoscopy and found it to be not nice but I did it, I have a small hiatus hernia but in no pain. I have excessive salivia they say due to acid reflux which is burning the insides of my cheeks and I worry about my teeth. The thought of having a tube down for 24 hours scares me!sorry to bother you but can you advise me what it was like. I hope your better now!

They no longer put the tube down your nose which I have had done. Now they put a capsule inside you when they do the endoscopy ( always request sedation so you know nothing about it ) and it sends data wirelessly. The capsule naturally works its way out of your system.

If the acid is still coming up your ppi dose is not high enough

      Hi Amanda,

i have already had an endoscopy and was refused sedation so if I have to go through this again I will insist this time. I Have now gone private and he definitely said up nose and down my throat which has really worried and spoiled my Christmas.

thanks for replying to me so quickly, I hope your well now! 🙂

well I went private too. Tell him that unless he does the wireless one, which he should have done via endscopy the first time with sedation you will find another specialist.

Thank you Amanda I am through Bupa with my husbands job, my endoscopy was done

through the  NHS and I only went private as I am not getting any better, I long for the day I can eat and taste a meal instead of this salty taste generating constantly in my mouth. Are you ok now?
