Piles banding help!

Hi there,

I will have the banding procedure on 1st of February 2017 and I am really scared. After I read some opinions and people who experienced this procedure I am terrified, only negative opinions and I am very confused, I don't know if I want to go forward with this procedure now. I have 2 small internal piles and a bigger one which comes out after each bowel movement and it has to be introduced back in, apologies for these expressions but I don't know how to explain in other terms 😧. I've been to the doctor and I was checked and he recommended the banding. He didn't explained very well how the banding will be and I asked him if is painful and he said it's gonna be uncomfortable but you can resume to your normal activities straight away. I managed to have off on the day of the procedure and the next 2 days but I can't afford and my employer won't give me off for weeks. Can you please tell me how is the procedure, what to expect, how long does it take to recover. I am a professional nursery nurse and I work with children and my job involves lots of movement?

I will really appreciate your advice!

Many thanks,

Suzana

    Suzana,

The procedure that I recently had done is the hemorrhoidectomy (scapel removal) and it does take at least two weeks for healing. Now the banding in not as familiar with and don't have any experience with it. I'm sorry I can't be more of a help, but continue to search the web on the procedure, I'm sure you will find more of what you're looking for.

    Sorry

Hi suzanaI am also a qualified NNEB  worked in a day nursery, then to a Nursery School where I stayed for 25 years.

Had 4 grade 4 haemorrhoids banded 3 times. Hardly any pain at all, a tiny ache similar to a period pain. Honestly a piece of cake nothing to it. Did bleed a lot 6 weeks later, but only for one day so took no notice of that. Did not need any pain killers at all, hot soapy baths ... Great!  Last banding was Aug,. 2016. But this did not work so I had an haemorrhoidectomy on Nov. 24 th 2016. Doing absolutely great. Banding is nothing to worry about, an haemorrhoidectomy is a different kettle of fish. But banding helped me for about 5 years do not worry yourself too much about this procedure. Text me anytime, best of luck.

Suzana just thought I would tell u a bit more about my banding. Had an appointment to see the surgeon, he said to have a look and see what was going on since the last banding. He then said ok will do all 4 whilst you are here and then a tiny bit uncomfortable and a few mins later he said all done and take these pain killers if you need to . I had no idea he was going to do the banding at the same time as I went to discuss the situation with him!! Had no time to think worry or prepare !!!!! Job done but as it was my 3rd banding over a few years it did not work and as I said had to have an haemorroidectomy in the end. Do let me know how you get on Best wishes...,😋

Ohhh poor you! I hope you feel better now. Thank you for sharing your experience with me. In my situation I have 2 small internal ones and a big one so 3 in total. They didn't bother me until a few months ago. I had them from 2014 and I was ok like they weren't there but my GP referred me to a specialist and I had the colonoscopy done and now I am scheduled for the banding. Your experiences helps me a lot and now I know what to expect. The doctor said it will band them all at the same time so hopefully won't go wrong. Will updated you all after the procedure and fingers crossed it won't be complications.

All the best and again many thanks x

The banding is NOTHING really. But I did have a colonoscopy once because of rectal bleeding and the worst about this was drinking the FLEET so clear out the colon. The actual colonoscopy was a bit uncomfortable as I remember. But at that time I did not have any banding done only a colonoscopy. The banding came a long time later during N examination. Have you done it ? I remember asking and the surgeon replied yes. All done. Went home with slight pain like a period pain, but was truly fine afterwards. Keep me posted, June

I've done the colonoscopy on November 2016 and it was fine. It wasn't uncomfortable at all for me, then they called me in January to schedule the banding and the next available date was 1st of February.

Ohh on the 18 of January I had an appoiment with the nurse at the hospital for the MRSA test which took 5 seconds to do it and that's all my journey, now I am super nervous for the banding but hopefully it will be ok 😧. The N examination I haven't done it. What is that?

      Thank you xx

It was a slip in typing meant to write an and it came out N. When I saw him last August I had no idea he was going to talk to me and then do all 4 bandings at the same time. I thought it was an appointment for just a chat. But he used internal instruments and a few minutes later it was all over. He is the same surgeon that I have been dealing with for this problem for 20 years .. First it was injections, then banding, and lastly an haemorrhoidectomy. Injections and banding was absolutely nothing at all really. Haemorrhoidectomy... Well that is an entirely different story. Let me know how you get on. June

      Hi,

I hope you're well! I had my banding done yesterday, it was so painfull. I written my experience down below. The doctor said he banded 2 out of 3 piles. Today is the 2nd day and I just had a bowel movement and only 1 came off and I experienced a bit of bleeding but the thing is the big one is still coming out and the surgeon said that he banded that one so I am scared that the procedure didn't work for the big one. Is it possible that it will come off later in the week? Or they just come off at the first bowel movement?

      Many thanks,

      Suzana

Hi Suzana, the bands do come off the next morning after a BM but it is usually enough time to strangle them I had hardly any pain the 3 times I had them done, but ended up with a haemorrhoidectomy in the end. Still it was fine for quite a few years of banding. I am 100 per cent perfect in that area now. Good luck, June.

      Hi June,

hope you don't mind me contacting you. I had 4 internal hemorrhoids banded 6 weeks ago. Noticed some bleeding afterwards, & after bands came off. But its 6 weeks on now & feeling tender, irritable. I had week check by colorectal surgeon who said the bands had all come off & the hems had ulcerated as expected. might see a little more blood not to worry...at this 6 week it has become a little itchy & warm inside anal area...then after bowel movement this morning noted some fresh streak of blood on the stool & small amount on the toilet tissue. Nurse told me its a difficult area to heal, damp, & with stools being passed, stretching can open up the ulcers, then they can bleed again. it might happen on & off & eventually heal. I have another check in December...i have health anxiety btw so don't want to get myself overly upset about this. Just after some reassurance that its to be expected at this point, & i shouldn't freak out about the blood...any kind advice would be much appreciated

Hi sorry for the random response, but I actually wanted to know how you were doing? your story sounds similar to mine. I had banding done recently and experienced bleeding ever since I have health anxiety as well which is not great. I'm just concerned about the bleeding and I was wondering at what point it stopped for you?

      Hi jen

sorry for my late reply! Since my last banding of 3 hems which was December 2020, As I was still having some irritation, I asked for check up & had 3 more banded - yesterday - 25th May. This was performed by my consultant, who was satisfied he'd got a good lot of the hems. Felt quite uncomfortable initially, like bruise sensation, consultant reassured me this is normal. He also has told me again to expect bleeding after BMs this can occur the next day & over the next few weeks. Last time I experienced small bleeds on & off over 3 months after banding, then it stopped occurring. Which again is pretty normal as they heal. We all heal at different rates - & it can take 3-6 months to heal for some. In the meantime, use a step under feet when you have a BM & lean with straight back - mimic squat position - don't strain - say "Moooge!"as you go. Drink up to 2 litres of water per day to keep the colon hydrated. 5 portions of fruit & veg per day. My condition was caused by chronic constipation & not doing the things I have just recommended. As you know, I also have quite severe health anxiety, but this is being managed with, Pregabalin, body identical HRT, CBT & hypnosis. And I am improving. I know you are concerned with bleeding, & I would follow that up with your Dr. Hope all this helps - contact again if you need to chat.
