How long do I need to keep a pillow between legs when lying on non op side. At 6 weeks review 2 weeks ago, I was told I could lie on non op side with a pillow between legs but forgot to ask how long I need to keep pillow. Also how long before if is comfortable to lie on op side.

    Hi Again,

Well, hospitals vary hugely on this one - I was told as long as it feels comfy, which was about two weeks post op. they also didn't mind my sleeping on the operated leg which I did too! Others have had very different advice! Mic x

Defo varied advice. My lot say six weeks on back then pillow between legs. Just got my first mile in -- not in my ballet shoes.

Hi i'm just 4 months. I wasn't told I needed a pillow to lie on my unop side but was told it might be a while before my op side was comfortable enough to lie on.

I used a pillow though as my knees hurt and couldn't sleep all night on my side. A couple of weeks ago I changed to putting on my Damart kneewarmers as a barrier between my knees and found that better than the pillow - it seemed to put less strain on the knee and leg. I can manage 3/4 of the night now on my side and last night did all except half an hour when my knees started to ache and I had to revert to my back. I think the freedom of being able to move my legs about a bit helps as you tend to keep them in one position if you use a pillow.

I still can't sleep on the operated side managing just about and hour on that side as it is starts to hurt. This is different from my op 15 years ago when I could lie on both sides very quickly.

      Hi Annedi

Like you...my ops were over a decade apart. And yes recovery was a bit different both times...tho excellent health care by nhs both times.

Sounds like you are managing your recovery well. You know your body and I feel sure you will get lots of healing in next few weeks....look after yourself and hope you get a full nights sleep soon.

      Take care

Mine were nhs too and the same surgeon both times who I was really happy with  - the scars look identical apart from the current one still being red. It takes ages to get the white skin. I had ceramic this time though (to see me out - not sure how long he thought I would last!) and last time metal with plastic liner.

Hope you are doing well with yours!

My knee oon my op side locks with the pillow and is really painful to unlock. This never happened pre op so maybe it is due to lying in one place for too long. Damart leg warmers!! Sound fancy.!!!

    Hi there

you and I and Georgie and Kate and linzi are all on the same timeframe as i recall (8 weeks now!  woo hoo!)

I gave up the pillow between the knees about 2-3 weeks ago and now happily sleep on the operated side as well as the unoperated.... basically I am back to normal for sleeping.  (which is a joy compared with the sleeping on my back nights!).  Didn't really ask anyone, just did it

I started the operated side sleeping about a week-10days ago and it did feel slightly  odd at first but is now fine... I think it was just the scar feeling a bit sting-y

      Hi Neil, Georgie, Kate,

About one hundred years ago, wasn't there a stage of courting in England, where a couple who were engaged were allowed to share a bed,  but had a boulster pillow between them?!

So, I guess  having a pillow between would feel slightly odd at first , but i guess they gotten used to it , just as hippies can get used to not having a pillow too!
