do your walking boot have the red button that you can use to pump up the support around the ankle? when i first got the ok to walk I would pump that baby up as tight as it could go and that was the only way I could walk for about the first week. it gives your ankle the support you need and also helps you psychology get back into the routine of walking. I could no psychologically walk without the boot in the beginning. I tried and was soooo surprised that I couldnt even muster up the courage to take a step on my bad foot. It was insane! That boot was a GOD send. I wouldnt of bounced back so quickly without it.

it was so reasurring to read how psycologically the fear of walking on your bad leg was a major issue for you x sadly they didnt offer any kind support to me when i left the fracture clinic minus my cast after 8 weeks and fitted with the boot ! it took a stiff talking to myself to actually start putting any kind of pressure on my bad leg even with the boot on but i think the best help i found was on youtube where hallelujah someone was kind enough to address the issue and have me feeling normal to have this battle in my head youtube gave me the confidence to bite the bullet ! once id found the right amount of pressure to start pressing down on digital scales i was calmed to feel no pain or bad effect on 2.5 stone so that was it once id got that in my head that my leg wasnt going to snap under the strain lol lol
i took it slow little steps .
its still day one cast off so im kinda making friends with this limb i no longer recognise
the shaving of the hair came close to needing a strimmer !!!!! omg !!!!
so if anyone else reads this feeling scared please feel comforted that its normal to panic a bit with the prospect of putting pressure on your leg thats still healing x
the fear will pass one you have gently put your foot down on the scales xxx
i was quite surprised how casual the fracture clinic was regarding weight bearing newly aquainted with my boot!
3 exercises shown not by physio by the way and told to just increase exercises and repetitions as pain levels would soon let me know if doing too much !
told a further 2mnths in the boot !
i am proud of myself to have got through the fear and hopefully on my way now to the next stage of recovery his site has been such a support and help xx

Doc said same to me - gave me the boot and said walk. well i couldnt, took a long time to get there. i didnt want to take pain relief but when i did ( cocodamol regularly) i could at least manage to walk. i also took some anti depressants to help me cope. it will get better, do what you can, be kind to yourself, accept help, take pain relief and slowly your body will mend. Im 13 months post op for the last 4 - 5 months massive improvement no pain relief , bit of a minor blip at the moment think its tendonitis ! good luck

This is what I'm worrying about as well, 3 weeks post op with plate and screws, all up will be 7 weeks in a cast, see my ortho dr in 3 weeks to get the cast taken off and he said he's 99% sure I'll be on my feet, no mention of a boot?? Surely they can't expect you to just walk out of there like normal when you haven't walked in nearly 2 months

The best thing i would suggest is physical therapy . your doctor should have sent you to a therapist to help with your range of motion, strength exercises for ankle and also with weight bearing before walking in regular shoes. i tell everyone that physical therapy is very important for any injury !!

when i came out of my subtalar fusion, I was non weight bearing for eight weeks. it took about three weeks to learn to walk again. i did each day in hour increments. first day one hour on foot. second day two hours, etc. it really helped.

I suspect you will be into an Air Cast, your foot needs to be 90 degrees before this happens. Also, you still use the airboot with crutches (2 initially, 1 for balance, then eventually remove the crutches).

Hi
its very early days for you i came out of my cast after 8 weeks and went into a Aircast boot for another 4 weeks then slowly about 2 weeks weening off the boot to become fully weight bearing . i had 9 sessions of PT to gain better movement things started to improve however im now 8 months since surgery and still very restrictive with walking at any speed and have not been able to go back to my normal job as a post lady walking 7 miles daily . ive just had a Ct scan to see whats holding up my full recovery , consultants saying it could be the plates but they cant be removed until i reach the year also been told that this type of injury and surgery can take up to 18 months to fully recover . lots of patience is required and acceptence which i have had a very hard time with . you will get there not everyone heals to the text book and if your like me youve beating yourself up about that please dont give yourself understanding and kindness .

i want to make a suggestion to debbie and anyone else thats still recovery and trying to get back to normal routine. walmart has a ankle compression brace that cost about $9-$15 dollars . the brace has worked wonders for me and i wear it to work and when i'm doing my execersies. debbie i would try it and maybe it will help you when you go back to work. im two yrs from ankle surgery broken 3 places, dislocated, 7 screws, orif surgery so i know how hard and frustrated ankle recovery can be. this site has been a blessing to me because i didn't know what to exspect until i came to this site. whatever i feel that has helped me i try to pass to everyone else.
