Pleurisy and Chest Infection Clarithromycin

I really hope someone can give me some advice. Before Christmas I came down with a cold which turned into a chest infection. I didnt go to a GP as usually these things clear up. However by Christmas Eve I was starting to feel pretty bad and called the doctor but they were closed so I didn't go. Went on the 27th and was diagonosed with a chest infection and given Amoxicillin. I finished taking these but still felt bad and started to develop a pain under my right breast, almost like a pulled muscle or bruising of the ribs... I asked a doctor and he checked my pulse to rule out a pulmonary embolism???? and said you have pulled a muscle from coughing.... With that I left and carried on taking Ibuprofen which helped ease the pain. The Monday I had a strange incident where my heart was beating really fast and irregular and I felt sweaty, dizzy and couldnt stop shaking. I went home from work and thought about going to the doctors. Plus the pain in my right side was getting worse. I went back to the gp who said I was probably suffering with Pleuritic pain from the infection and he described me more antibiotics.. Amoxiclav...

I still felt bad and he asked me to go back the following Friday to check my blood pressure as it was slightly high.

Finished the Amoxiclav and suddenly felt bad again... nothing I have ever expereienced. Chest Pain, really bad cough, weak sweaty, extremely exhausted...no sense of smell, taste etc... so tired.

I went back again to the gp and broke down in tears as now the middle of January and things seem to be getting worse. He took blood and sent me to the hospital for a chest xray and the blood test he states shows an infection but no blood clot on the lung. The chest xray has also returned clear??? I rarely go the the doctors but he almost made me feel like a hyperchondriac...

He prescribed me more antibiotics but this time Clarithromycin 500mg twice per day.

I was hoping these would have kicked in by now but still feeling terrible and am taking these alongdside extra strength Ibuprofen and paracetamol for the pain in my chest.

I am starting to wonder if I will ever get better. I feel so low and down, I havent left the house for days and just want to sleep as I am feeling so exhausted.

Has anyone suffered from anything similar or know how long it takes to get over this... Its been over a month now and I just cant remember what it feels like to feel normal...

Sorry for the long post...

I have to see her tomorrow and I feel my chest has still been rattley and still coughing. Cannot wait to see her and check this chest!!!!

    Hi there,

I am suffering at the moment with all of what you have mentioned, plus a constant need to blow my nose! I have a fractured rib, right at the top under my bra line so coughing is really painful & when i take a deep breath.

I am really fed up as i've had this for 2 weeks now & just been back to doctors yesterday & been given 1 a day of Clarithromycin, as amoxycillin didn't do anything (usually i am very responsive to this too).

I know your post is over a year old & hopefully you came through it all ok, but how long did it go on for? I've been searching the web for similar symptom your's was the closest. I'm pulling my hair out as been stuck in for so long.....just want to get back to normal.

Bad news Im affraid( mabey ), I have a spinal tap beginning of September, I didnt want to have it done as I heard a lot of stories about it going wrong but my Doctor reassured me and said I need this done to find out what exactly is wrong with me, especially as my neurologist suspects I may have MS, I kind of suspected it myself as menieres was mentioned to me only once by my doctor and my neurologist didnt really seem concerned at all when I mentioned Menieres. I got a couple of books from the library on MS and as I suspected my sympoms are very similar if not, not far from similar, to the symptoms mentioned in one of the books.

Its a big thing but believe it or not ive all but accepted it, sods law!

    Hi all,

I thought I would also add my experiences of 9 months of suffering with various symptoms, in case it may help (and apologies for the long message, but I am hoping I may help some people):-

My initial ‘symptoms’ (from November 2014). (Mostly left sided) were:-

    - Neck and trap tightness

    - Tight throat/cough/swallowing

    - Nausea (usually accompanied by fatigue and feeling depressed)

    - Left or both rear shoulder ache/sore

    - Left or both upper arm/elbow ache sore

    - Sometimes sore/achy ribs and chest pain (left side)

    - Upper thoracic tightness and ache/sore - Horrendous chest pains and burning (very deep), nearly called ambulance at the time

    - Occasional arm/shoulder blade spasms

Initially this was thought to be pluerisy and I was put on 3 lots of antibiotics. Then I had an X ray which showed no issues with the heart, lungs or neck. I then had an MRI scan of the neck and apparently I have disks protruding hitting the nerves. This is where it get's a bit more strange and it sounds like many are also struggling to get a clear diagnosis........the Orthapedic surgeon said that the neck disks would not cause all of my symptoms i.e. the chest pains etc......yet 3 GP's, Physio and an Occupational Health doctor said that it is possible.

I was then sent to Physio, which helped after treatment but then I had nasty 'flare ups'. I can now do light cardio but no weight training. The GP's are totally lost and I feel like a hyper chondriact asking for assistance.

    Symptoms are currently (Aug 2015)

    * Many symptoms have eased, but issues are still ‘left’ torso based and I experience nasty ‘flare ups’. I have full sensation and near full mobility (mobility has greatly improved):-

    - Stinging/burning at the back of the neck, tight and sore scalenes, with a ‘clicking’ neck. Some days are worse than others

    - Occasional pulling feeling, especially with cardio work, almost like a stitch, which goes from the left sternum, down round the ribs into the stomach. Sometimes have a strange feeling in the left side of the stomach, other times completely fine. It’s as if something is trapped or irritated

    - Intermittent rear shoulder blade ache (not experienced for about a month)

    - Intermittent back of arm and elbow ache, ache under armpit (not experienced for about a month)

    - General Fatigue

    - Unable to lie on back too long before irritation.

    - Burning left sided ribs and back (eased within the last month)

    - Dull ache near belly button and occasional stabbing/burning pains. This eased off to a burning sensation and pressure left side (burning lower and rear left sided ribs).

As you can see certain things have improved, yet there are still outstanding symptoms. I've recently had a load of blood tests and an ECG, all normal. Today I have had cardiac ultrasound and stress test, again (fortunately), all normal..........but I am still having various flare ups and problems.

However, what I have found is that earlier this week, at my wits end, I went to a really good Osteopath, she did a load of checks then manipulated my spine, which caused a large crack (this is just air between the joints, not the bone). After this I had great relief for a day and the best sleep in months. It is possible that I have damaged the nerves in the neck and the upper spine via self defence and weight training (over time), causing these odd left sided flare ups which have stumped medical professionals.

I'm not 'fixed' yet, but I feel I am getting somewhere now, therefore, although I am not saying that this is the problem all of you may have, but it could be possible (if you have had blood tests, cardiac, lung etc and all are normal), that you may have a muscular skeletal issue causing some nasty symptoms or flare ups, therefore perhaps it'll be worth trying this route if no luck with any other (but ensure that it is a good Osteopath who is throughly checking your previous history and records). You could even have inflammation of the joints in the rib cage, or issues with the nerves themselves as this all has caused me lung/rib pain and previously coughing and phlegm along with a tight throat. Certain nerves can cause havoc in the body, but I think it's hard to diagnose with so many symptoms.

All the best to you all and good luck,

    Tyrone

Well the one thing i can say is if you are a bust person and always on the go there is only one thing that comes to mind. FLUIDS!!!! Drink as many fluids as you can.

My mother is a type 2 diabetic and has a mesh in her stomach. Her muscles are messed up and it is hard for her to cough any phlem out of her chest. through trial and error we found that using a home remedy is the best way to go. Garling with salt water or using mouth wash that has very low alcohal or no alcohal in it is one. Keeping the bacteria from grow and dissolving it is the key. You also have to stay away from anything acidic (orange juice, lemon juice, etc.) that will cause you to develop more mucus so the bateria can multiply. We don't want that. My mom and I always fuss about her putting lemon in her tea when she is sick, but when she listens she gets better faster. So say yes to soups that are water based, No Cream Soups. Stay away from diary and dairy based products, as well as yogurt. Yes stay away from yogurt it causes moisture in the throught.

Keep in mind the basics, we sometimes forget that old school remedies are the best and inexpensive way to being healthy in this new day and age. The goal here is the dry out the bateria to prevent something more serious from happening.

Also if you like taking baths while you are sick that is not good, you will leave your pores open and allow the bateria to spread. Showering in warm to cool is best because your pores will not stay open for too long, so you don't have to worry about making your cold worse. Keep your feet covered and no hat on your head. The reason is the feet will remain exposed without socks causing chills at certain times of the day if your at home resting, you want a consistant temperature on your feet. Keeping your head uncovered will allow any extra heat in your body to release, but make sure that your scalp and hair is completely dry when your out of the shower. Dress cozy and get as much rest as you can if you can stay at home.

I know that this may seem long but use what method is best for you, this is what works for my mother.

    Dear Giuila

My grandmother who is 94 has very similar symptmes that you have described in yr thread.

She started with cough and then diagnosied with chest infection and was in hospital ICU for 10 days. Even after she was brought home cleared of chest infection, she is alwasy short of breath, heavy breathing, extreme exhaustion after a walk from bed to bathrrom, cough after nebulization, no desire to eat.

Can you let us know if you have been cured of yr symptoms and if so what worked for you.

It still sounds like an infection have your doc send a sputum sample (mucus) from whatever your coughing up. Gland swelling is most likely due to an infection. It could be viral in which case ABs won't be effective. U really need to have a culture done. If your Breath sounds are wheezing or coarse, there is something going on. Insist on a repeat X-ray if it's been more than a few days. If your doctor can't help u see a pulmonary specialist.

Sorry to hear all that and I know how you feel.  I started on 20th December flu like symptoms, stayed in bed for 12 days so ill.  Then I got better, in January it all came back, I just took painkillers, and sort of got better, in Feb it came back, with the worse cough ever, so got the Antibiotics same as yours.  It cleared it up but it did not go away, and now once again its back, so now I am on a different type, but to be honest 4 days in and I feel no different. I dont think the Antibiotics are working but will finish the course. Also waiting results of a chest x ray.  I am also going to start with some alternative medicine as my immune system must be shot at.  I do know some of my friends have suffered the same thing and it has taken them about 2 months, but I must be really lacking in something because I cannot get rid of it.  I hope you do.
