Polyps on gallbladder can they cause you pain ????

Hi everybody thank you for taking the time to read and hopefully answer my question.

I'm 32 I've been a heavy drinker most my life only in the pub after work and at weekend but I've defo drank my share of alchole. just before Christmas I was having pains in my right side with lots of gas that would feel As though it was moving around with a bloating feeling that would come and go.

I made an appointment to see the doctors. I had blood tests they came back fine.I'd also given up alchole at this point and was feeling pritty good. So the doctor took no further action. Then a few weeks later it stared again had bloods tests done again they came back fine again. I was asked to go for a ultra sound. At this point I was fearing liver damage from my heavy drinking.

I went to the ultra sound was told I had a small scar on my liver and a polyk on my gallbladder but was it was nothing to worry about.

This was a month ago ad this pain comes and goes it's like a dull ache under my right ribs moving towards my centre chest bone. I also get another pain in my abdomen on the right side lower down I often feel gassy like a feeling of trapped wind but I know it's not that. I was told I have no gallstones on my ultra sound.

so can a polyp give you pain ?

I've had this pain dull ache on my right side for 5 days now the other pains come and go but always have the dull ache is that normal ?

Sorry I wrote this in my breach at work so kinda rushed please ignore spelling punctuation mistakes thanks

Hi Kevinplus. I had several polyps in my gallbladder and yes they caused me a great deal of pain and nausea. When the gallbladder squeezes itself to push out the bile acids it will squeeze on the polyps and these will also reduce flexibility of the gallbladder,if you can Imagine the polyps aren't as flexible as the gallbladder wall and causes the pain. I'm surprised the drs haven't said it needs to come out! The wind could be from excess bile in your bowels if the polyps are big enough to make the bile acid spill out of the gallbladder. Do you get a stinging ring piece at all when going for a No2? smile

Hi James thanks for the reply.i the doctors didn't seem bothered by the polyp and said don't worrie about it. I've got an spoonsment next week I don't. Have any stinging but I'd do have loose stools that are light coloured also my urine is quite dark I'm never in real pain just a constant dull ache...can I ask were about did you get your pain ?

Did you have any gallstones aswell ? I've been told I have no stones and as my ultra sound is clear and my liver is fine. The doctors keep trying to tell me I've pulled a muscle or it's a reflux I know it isn't

Hi Kevin just reading your message to James if you've got light coloured stools, gray, clay like appearand and dark urine it does sound like gallbladder.

I was in contant pain that started with an ache around my right ribs, after several tests to rule out gallstones they found out my gallbladder wasn't working properly and I just had it removed.

You may want to look at biliary dyskinesia as the symptoms are very similar to gallstones, which is why it takes a time to diagnose.

From reading peoples comment on here I've read alot that some doctors have thought is was a pulled muscle or costacondritis which I believed I had until this started in severity last May.

I know after a clear ultrasound my gp referred me for a gastroscopy to rule out stomach ulcers and then a ct scan as ultrasounds don't always pick up gallstones. Keep pushing for a referral.

      Take care

Thanks again Katherine you're a star 😃 I will research that now. I'm told I have no gallstones and liver is fine! So something is up. I'm wondering if this polyp is giving me the pain. I've got pains that seem to move around it's mainly on the right where my liver is but it can move to the left and some times center of my chest. I have bloating and wind. that comes and goes.this time it's lasted over a week i know the pain can ease abit put the pain is never really bad just a dull ache like wind but isn't. I never get ATTACKS just getting a constant pain dose this sound like dyskinesia to you??

It doesn't seem to get any worse when I eat. Thought which I read is common for gallbladder problems

Mine started with a sharp severe pain one night then I was left with a dull ache just under my right ribs but as time went on I started to feel sick after eating and vomiting, then as I cut out spicy foods and rich foods I didn't feel so sick but the pain got worse as I ate. In the end I was eating ok just really small amounts but in constant pain that was mostly managable with pain relief. I think until you get a referral you won't know for sure. All my tests and blood test can back ok which is classic for biliary dyskinesia symptoms but I'm not a doctor so you do need to see someone to get that clarified.

Let me know how you get on.

Hi kev, I'm surprised there not bothered about the polyp,it must be small because my polyps were large and i was told if they get to big they can become cancerous. My father had bowel cancer due to cancerous polyps so maybe that's why they didn't take any chances and removed it within a month. My urine is still dark unless i drink lots and lots of water i feel like i constantly need to flush myself out all the time. My pain was lower right side under the last rib a couple of inches.

One visit to the gastroenterology department i was told i didn't then another visit i did. This went on for every visit until my gallbladder was taken out and then they knew i did have gallstones. One thing i learnt about drs is they don't even know what day of the week it is let alone how to do their job! Lol

Hi thanks for the reply . Im was also very confused to why my doctor doesn't seem concerned about the polyp. I've only found since researching about them online that a ploy can in fact give you pain and could even be cancerous if bigger than 5mm. When I asked my doctor if the polyp could be why I'm having pains he dismissed it saying he didn't think so. He didn't mention monitoring the size or that some can be cancerous. The pain I'm having has to be my gallbladder if my liver is fine which I'm told it is....I've had two liver function blood tests and a ultra sound saying my liver is totally fine

HI Kevin I think you need to push for a referral to a gastroenterolgist, if you're in the UK, gp's as far as I'm away don't do  HIDA scan referral or an mrcp has to be done by a gastro and at least you'll be speaking to someone who is a specialist in this area. If he didn't think the pain you're having isn't the polyp then he should be referring you. All my liver tests apparently were fine but when I went in for surgery the surgeon said he would do a cholangiogram (liver ultrasound) as my readings weren't off the map but were erratic, I haven't got the results yet as I have an appointment with him at the end of the month.

Please go back to your doctor and get that referral, you shouldn't be in pain. I know someone whose gallbladder was full of polyps and he was in severe pain, they didn't know how bad it was until they took the gallbladder out and he's a gp and it happened to him.

Let me know how you get on xx

Hi Kevin, I think you need to go back to your doctor and get a referral to a gastroenterologist, this should be looked at further by someone who is a specialist in this area, especially as your in alot of pain. If you need to then go to a&E for the pain and maybe able to push things along.

Let us know how you get on, take care.

Hi Katherine. Thanks for the reply I have thought of going to a&e many of times to speed things along but as our local a&e is about a 12 hour wait I always put it off. I will be taking your advise and asking to speak to a gastreonterologist thank you

Hi, yes I would you won't get anywhere until you start to see a gastroenterolgist.

My a&e is the same so only worth going if you're in extreme pain so you can by pass the queues!

Let me know how you get on, take care
