Poorly diagnosed condition

As a pediatric physiotherapist, with a special interest in juvenile hip conditions, it is interesting to hear everyones experience of this often poorly diagnosed condition. I'm sorry to hear quite so many people out there have had real problems with the medical team coming up with the correct diagnosis. As many of you have noticed the literature is fairly hard to come by unless you have extensive access to medical journals.

The reason that I am posting on this forum is to hear from anyone who has suffered SCFE and who would be happy to describe their original symptoms. Many of you have said that knee pain is often the first sign something isn't right and this fits with the majority of cases of SCFE I have seen. I would be really interested to hear what everyone else out there feels?

Hi Jacqui, our boys might be in the same time having replacements? That would be a bit of good moral support for them both.

my son had pain in his knee for about a year, also limping every time he done P.E at school, i bought him to my gp on several occasions and they examined the knee and said it is not swollen or anything so its probably growing pains and gave me painkillers for him. I also told them he cannot bend down on his knees as he cannot get up again as it is too painful and also his left knee would just give on him for no reason. I even went to talk to his P,E teacher and asked him not to give him any exercises where he has to bend down and also told him about the limping afterwards. Then in july he was running in a race and his leg just went from under him, he came home limping AGAIN but this time it just got worse so i took him to my gp who said he thought he had torn a muscle but the pain was now in his groin area. The gp done a referral for physio but my son was just getting worse, he could not even lift his leg of the floor, so i rang the physio as it had been over a week and said i need to see someone urgent so they made me an appointment for the following week. When we went he was using one of my crutches and was in so much pain he could hardly walk, the physio said t was a torn ligament and gave him exercises to do, i said i thought it was his hip as the pain in the groin area and can they do a xray but they said because he has not fallen or had a accident he does not need one!!! 2 weeks later, go back. hes even worse, they say it can take time to heal. i was not happy at all so they got a registrar to examine him and she said he has no mobility in his hip and sent us for x ray straight away, ct a long story short, lost xray, lost referral for orthopaedic consultant, numerous phone calls till i finally see the ortho consultant middle of september !!!!!! had surgery 7th october, 2 pins inserted, major slip on left hip. leg shorter and limp

I hope he's getting on ok now.

There's some appalling ignorance about this condition isn't there?!

Is he under a Orthopaedic Hospital?....they are the best for this condition; Mr **** is the expert.

Hi all, this is the first time I've done anything like this but Its so nice reading that others have gone through the same as me - my problems started when I was 12 years old I started walking with a limp so my parents took me to the doctor who basically said I was fat (I wasn't obese but wasn't twiggy either) so my parents walked out red faced but after 3 months the limp was getting worse so again went to the doctors and again they were told I was just fat that's all it was so believing the doctor we left, a further 3 months later went back and again told I was just fat and my parents were made to feel awful by the doctor then about a week later on the Thursday I kicked someone in a fight and was sent home from school - the next day I returned and all I remember is the fact I could not sit still to save my life so on the Saturday I was taken to the doctors again to be asked to touch my toes which I struggled and my parents were told to ring the X-ray department (still no rush) but on the Sunday I woke up and I could hardly walk - I was screaming with pain so a doctor was called to my house - and after 7/8 months of pain and a limp all the doctor did was lift me leg and take it to the side and then I was taken into hospital.

At the hospital I was given an x-ray and the ortho consultant went ballistic as my hip was completely out of the socket - this has slowly been happening for 6 months and when I had the fight it had totally popped it out, I was put straight into traction and the next day I had 2 pins put in my hip - I was then informed 4 days later that one pin was in 2 far so I had to be taken back down to have it pulled back abit - 1 year later I had the pins removed and the 4 months after that I was told the op hadn't worked as they had wanted so I was taken back in and had my hip broke - put into correct position and had a steel plate with extendable screw put in at 16 years old but was told it was either that option or a hip replacement and the metal work was taken out a year later which seemed to work !

I am now 31 years old and I have been told I neeeeed a hip replacement but they won't give me one as I am far 2 young and I have the option of either having the replacement and spending my life from 50 in a wheelchair with no hip or put up with the pain I suffer on a daily basis - the challenges to me life the socks and shoes issue and just receive injections every 6 month until I'm at an age of replacement which will be about 45 years old - but the constant question that is always going through my head is IF THE DOCTOR HAD DIAGNOSED THIS THE VERY FIRST TIME I WENT WOULD MY HIP BE AS BAD AS IT IS NOW IF IT HAD BEEN PICKED UP ?!?!? I was also informed it was more common in active young boys and I was an active young girl and it's my right hip !

I'm currently having physio as its been found that I have no core stability or balance as my body has gone into a certain way of working due to the hip and I'm using every muscle the wrong way - and also have a very very very noticeable stronger left side and very very wear right side !!

I had a fall at 11. 21 years later I've still had no surgery. Avascular necrosis set in at 12. I've been told since 14 the only thing they van do is a replacement yet I'm still waiting.

I presented non weight bearing in a lot of pain. I was sent home and told to use an ice pack on my ''groin strain'' The pain was down the front of my femur. No xray.

Interested to see other people experience

    hey all.

i was diagnosed with scfe at the age of 14 after a long battle with doctors who said it was simply growing pains. After the initial operation I recovered well and had very low amounts of pain...up until a year and a half ago when my pain levels shot u to what they were before.

So i went to a specialist and he told me that the pin and slipped and im booked in for corrective surgery. Has anyone else had this problem? And if so did it help? im worried about going through the pain again if it isn't going to help.

    Help lol!!

My son was 10 and first presented with pain in his left thigh/groin area In late Oct. early Sept. of 2014. We were puzzled because he hadn't experienced any type of injury minor or major. After a week and a half of the pain not easing up we went to our family dr. and they diagnosed him with a strained/pulled quad/muscle. We were instructed to go easy over the next week and a half and no strenuous activity ex: no gym class, no running, no jumping, etc. a week and half later ...pain was slightly less but still present. He went dirtbike racing ...while taking a turn at about 5 miles an hr. possibly slower he laid his bike down..on the opposite hip...but it must have nudged or jared the hip and sent him into immense pain. Went to the hospital where they told us it was a fractured hip, scheduled us for surgery the next day. Of course after the Ortho. Dr. looked at the xrays he informed us about what it was. A screw was placed. 6 weeks no weight, 2 weeks on crutch's partial weight, released to walk. January 6 released to run play normal ...no jumping off anything of significant height, and still no racing yet. However 3 days ago, he began complaining of same pain in the same thigh. Not sure whether it is due to the non activity or if there is a new or recurring issue. Any insight would be welcome.

Hi Im Jean I'm 32 years old. When i was 11 i started getting pain in my groin on my right side especially if i had been sitting on the floor with my legs crossed as kids do, it was like a constant dull ache which unfortunately i still have to this day. When the pain got worse and spread to my hip and knee along with an obvious limp, my dad took me to the doctors i was sent for the first of many xrays which the doctors couldn't spot a problem, 14 months later my dad had me back to my gp who sent me straight to the xray department with a note saying to look for SCFE Sure enough it was and it was urgent enough to have me operated on that day to put a screw in, i was 12 when i had the screw put in and i was 15 when it was removed and i have had never ending pain from it however i try my best to live a normal active life 😊 I think kids with any sort of joint pain in their hips or knees should be ruled out for this straight away!
