Positions in YOGA

Posted , 14 users are following.

I am 18 months post op and want to go to a yoga session.  I dislocated my hip 4 months ago and wondered if I would have difficulty with any of the positions.  I have difficulty lowering myself to the floor and getting back up.  I can do it slowly, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Brenda

How experienced are you at yoga and what precipitated the dislocation? I would have thought that You need to speak at length to physios , medical staff and yoga teachers and listen to their professional advice . I am no expert but would have thought it unwise after dislocating only 4 months ago

      Hi Maggie

Its nearly 20 months since I had the hip replacement and I was taking the heads off dandelions when I bent anddislocated my hip 4 months ago. I have been cautious ever since and it is a friend I used to line dance with who has asked me to go to yoga with her.  I think I will ask the instructor what positions would be suitable.  I've only been a few times but it was a few years ago.

Thank you for the concern Brenda

Brenda, I'm starting yoga on the 13th September. First time also. Your instructor should have some knowledge but also you'll know how far you can bend, I'm sure!

      Hi Emma

Good luck with your yoga. How long is it since your hip replacement.  I was thinking the instructor would advice me.

      All the best Brenda

Why yoga ? Isn't there some exercise less risky that you can do ? I wouldn't even go there with your history. 👣

      Hi Lisa

I love dancing but I have had to stop dancing because of the damaged nerves in my foot.  I feel as if I can't move it quick enough.  That's the reason a friend asked me to go to yoga with her.

Thanks for your concern and I'll keep you informed of any progress.

I think the type of THR you had (anterior, lateral, or posterior) would influence what sort of positions you could do.  Also your muscle tone/control would be relevant.  I think your surgeon and physiotherapist would be the best professionals to consult.

    HI Brenda

I am 3 1/2 months post op posterior RTHR and I too am starting Yoga, but not "normal" yoga I am taking "chair yoga" where you are not on the floor. As far as I gather there will be poses I should not do, such as twisting and crossing the "bad" leg over the good one. I spoke to my PT guy and he was all for it. I believe that at this point I/we can do most but with caution.

There is no way I would get up from the floor thus Chair Yoga. have fun Brenda but keep in mind what you are doing with your hip as far as movements are concerned.

      Hi Kaura

Thank you for the reply.  I am cautious that is the reason I'm asking for advice.  I think I will give t a try and see what the instructor has to say.

So you had a posterior hip replacement? Or Anterior?

      I had posterior replacement

Sorry to hear of your dislocation.  Did you have a posterior or anterior procedure?  I think the type of stretching exercise may also depend on your type of operation.

      Hi Pat

I had the posterior procedure.  Have you done yoga and how long is it since you had the hip replacement.  Was yours anterior or posterior.

I'm getting bilateral THR with the anterior approach 10/6.  Can't wait to get it done.  My original surgeon, who only did posterior, wouldn't do my surgery because of my desire to keep surfing and his concern for dislocation by participating in that sport.  The anterior is supposed to be less prone to dislocation but we will soon find out.  I sure do hope you get far beyond your dislocation event and not experience that again in the future.  I would think that yoga would be the best remedy of all but I'm sure that depends on what specific exercises you are doing.

How did your surgery go?  I heard that there should be no bridge pose, backbend, after anterior approach, and watch the position of feet, I can't recall if the chiropractors said internal or external rotation of feet was not good for anterior THR.  I am interested in anterior surgery. Any comments will be appreciated!

      Swan,

Check out the forum on Superpath hip replacement. There are no restrictions post surgery since your hip is NOT dislocated during surgery. I had mine done 12.4.17 and the recoveryhas been amazing. I was driving right away. About to get back on the tennis court and I am now 2.5 mos post op. I had mine done in AZ by Dr Jimmy Chow. BRillant surgeon who invented  Superpath. I went out of State to have him do my surgery. best decision I ever made! I wish you much luck.
