Positions in YOGA

Posted , 14 users are following.

I am 18 months post op and want to go to a yoga session.  I dislocated my hip 4 months ago and wondered if I would have difficulty with any of the positions.  I have difficulty lowering myself to the floor and getting back up.  I can do it slowly, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Brenda

    Brenda,

What were you doing to dislocate at 14 months?  I am now 22 months, but was up on my workshop roof doingrepairs after 7-8 monts, and never dislocated.  I am now doing very heavy landscaping work with 40 railway sleepers (around 120 pounds weight each, so 2 tonnes total), and still no problems other than a squeak when I bend down, which I had before.

It's not easy getting up off the floor is it ... I need to grab anything that is to hand, or try to get my good foot securely underneath me to take the weight.  Would Pilates be better than Yoga?

      Hi Graham

Ive followed your progress and think you have done really well.  I was taking heads off dandelions in the garden and bent over and finished up on the lawn and couldn't move.  My husband called the ambulance and they managed to get me on the stretcher.  I was in hospital for 5 days and now I'm very cautious about anything I do.

Hi Brenda just been reading what happened to you in your garden o my goodness ,if I can ask did Doctors managed to get it back in or did you have op?

I'm just over a year post op and having trouble, terrible pain in leg ,X ray on Monday GP says it may be half dislocating and popping back in I do hope not ,but pains wicked can't walk or move when it sets in ,I was only pushing trolley round supermarket when first happened so now on restrictions and crutches untill results threw.

      Hi anna

They managed to put it back in but I was given full sedation.  I hope you can get some satisfaction with your problem, there's nothing worse than being in pain.  When something like that happens it makes you cautious about everything you do.

      Hi renee

ive decided I think that's all I can do, go for one session and see what the instructor says.  My granddaughter and her friend are thinking about coming with me.  When I saw the surgeon he said everything looked fine.

My body is a bit confused at the moment everything I do cautiously.  I'll let you know how I get on if I go.

      Thank you for your concern.

      Hugs Brenda

Did you go to yoga?  How was it?  As a yoga teacher I would not know how to guide a student with a THR. Except now that I may be having one I am studying and finding out. But yoga teacher training did not address anything to do with hip replacement.

      Hi Swan

Ive been having trouble signing into the patient website.  I think I’ve resolved the problem now and I’m replying.  I hope you don’t have two of the same replies just bare with me.

I haven’t been to yoga yet.  It’s 25 months since I had the replacement hip and 9 months since the dislocation.  I still feel awkward getting down on the floor and back up.

Im going to start going to yoga with my granddaughter and I will let you know how I get along.  Apparently the teacher will tell me which positions I can and can’t do.

I had bilateral in Oct and at the suggestion of my PT, went to my first ever yoga session yesterday.  I'm 68 and I let my instructor know my THR situation.  Turned out it was was well worth it and I could due most all of it without feeling like I was jeopardizing anything.  They key, according to my instructor, is to listen carefully to your body and don't do anything you are in the least bit uncomfortable with.  As for me, I'll be going back. I think it helped me open my hips further.  As info I had anterior approach.  Not sure if this would be same for posterior THR patients.

      Hi Pat

Im glad you was happy with your Yoga session.  I had the posterior replacement 25 months ago and it dislocated 9 months ago gardening.  I am 71 years old and feel a bit cautious with everything I do now.

Im going to start yoga with my granddaughter and hope the instructor will show me what positions I can do.  I will let you know how I get on.

Im still having problems with damaged nerves in my foot.  At the moment I’m seeing my 3rd private physio.  The hospital just tell me there’s nothing that can be done for it.  I’ll try anything, that’s the reason I want to go to Yoga.

    Hi Brenda,

i just caught this thread & it’s very interesting that yoga is something you may try. I hope it helps you. I am very sorry about the disclocation. Bending over in your garden is a familiar way that a few people in my garden club have done the same thing. Dislocation while bending to pick flowers 🌺 has happened to 3 friends. That is exactly what I tell my surgeon . I don’t want to be another statistic bending down and boom there goes the hip. I have a old 20 yr old hip that the cup is wearing. Have symptoms of pain in crotch and am Leary to do much bending or lifting. I go in for X-rays every 6 months to watch the space between the poly and metal . This poly cup is fretting wearing down . Just had revision on the opposite hip, it’s always the fear when ever bending to floor . I try not to it causes pain for a few days as time goes on I will need a revision in the next few months to replace it. I hope it will not dislocate as my friends said it is very painful and I think we have all experienced way to much pain with OA hip replacement surgery and the whole nine yards. It gets me down so time but lived with it for so long I sometimes forget til that nagging pain reminds me.

THR is a blessing in many ways we do live a better life have mobility and experiences to share on this forum..

    best wishes to you.

Hi thank you for the reply.  I will let you know how I get on at Yoga if and when I go.  You have done well having 20 years with your new hip.  The pain you get in the crotch, does it happen when you are bending.  I have just started getting occasional pain in the groin and wondered what was causing it. I do an exercise 3 times a day the physio gave me for the damage nerves in my foot. I dont think it’s that because I seem to do it to relieve the pain.

I agree with your friend when she says how painful a dislocation is.  I had to have full sedation to put it back not the sp8nal I had when the hip was replaced. I wish you all the best and hope everything goes well for you.
