Post Fibroid Embolisation

If my experience can help I would like to share this to other sufferers of fibroid.

Having decided not to try for a family after having had 4  failed IVF's, I just like my life back without pain, bleeding & generally miserable every month.

I have ticked all the boxes that my gynae suggested pills, Zoladex, hysteroscopy-failed mirena or not even had it despite undergoing most uncomfortable impromptu procedure.

I cannot fault any of the staff who dealt and performed my procedure, they were excellent.

However, soon after the procedure my pain was not managed properly & I was in agony. I suggest that premedication of Voltarol, paracetamol @ anti emetics should be in place. Then as soon as the procedure is completed a bolus of 10 mg Morphine from the PCA should be initiated.

Diet wise eat less & high fibre to avoid abdominal discomfort.

Rest is vital.

The first week was I called 'a week of pain'.. The cramping was severe and round the clock pain killers, had to take 'oromorp' prescription.

Second week, things are getting better but constantly tired.

Third week, cramping started & slightly bleeding still very uncomfortable, guess this is my normal cycle time & already showing signs of fibroid shredding.

I'm still in this week of recovery and hoping that with what I have gone through the result is good in three months time.

UFE is less invasive but should be treated as having had major procedure because whilst there is no open wound, things are all happening inside you and only you can feel the pain!

Did you experience hair loss months after the procedure ? My hair is really thinned out and unnoticed it falling out late December . I have seem to be having

The worst luck with this procedure. December they said I was menopause my hormones have dropped that low. Now last month I had a period I think. It I have gone thorough every menopause System from

Hot flashes to vahinal dryness. Had my hormones and thyroid checked and just waiting at this point, sorry so long guys.

I had to think about this as I started to have hair loss during the symptons before the I had the emblisation. I didn't put the two togther until recently. And thank you for bring this subject up. My hair has started to grow back. Hormone problem, definitely get it checked out by your doctor.  I don't know your lifestyle, but for me as soon as I had the operation I said to myself time to readjust my lifestyle.  No stress or much less stress, do things that I ma happy to do, if it doesn't feel right then walk away, slow down and most importantly have fun. Look for new challenges and be happy.

    Hi all

I'm 9 days post embolisation. My experience was largely positive. I was given

a painkiller as a suppository hours before the procedure to help control the pain

I would be in. Right from the start of the procedure I was given a cocktail of drugs

including morphine, paracetomol, and anti sickness medication all administered by

a nurse throughout the procedure. Also on oxygen the entire time and stayed on

    oxygen until the next morning.

I was not allowed to go back to the ward until my pain was under control with a morphine pump.

The pain for me started mid procedure and was like a severe period pain. The morphine took

hours to kick in. The only issue was that during the night my blood pressure became dangerously

high so they had to give me meds for that too.

The nurses were wonderful. The interventional radiologist was great. The gynae doctor was a pile

of excrement who initially refused to sign me of work longer than 5 days until my partner intervened and

got it upped to 7 days with my GP agreeing a further 7 days. That has pretty much been my experience

of the gynae dept. of this particular hospital. I have zero faith in them largely due to their obsession with trying

to coerce me into having a hysterectomy without discussing all the options. I've felt I've had to argue my way to less

    invasive treatment options.

I'm also currently taking Esmya. I should have been offered it last year but as I said, the gynaecologist was obsessed with hysterectomies

and didn't think to offer anything that might help control my horrendous periods prior to embolisation. By the time I found out

about Esmya and managed to get it prescribed I was only about a week away from the embolisation procedure. So I've got a 3 month

course which I started a week before UFE and have continued.

My one piece of advice is: don't be intimidated by gynaecologists and don't think they always know best. I know there are some great ones

out there, but it's like everything, there are some rubbish ones too.

Glad you had a positive experience. I also was given oxygen while the procedure was being done I just wish they had my pain meds ready when I was done. The only thing I'm disappointed in is the radiologist didn't speak to me the next day he spoke with my husband after the procedure but not me and I had to call his office a few days later to confirm any restrictions but was told there wasn't any which still puzzles me since I were in so much pain. I took 2 weeks off to play it safe. I guess it depends on the Doctor.

If you need more time off go back to your doctor. The hospital should have signed you off for 2 weeks. That's the minimum stated in the NHS information leaflets in London but it should be the same across the UK -NHS ENGLAND

That really is disgraceful. Maybe the radiologist thinks we're still living in the 1950's! I wasn't advised of any restrictions after the procedure but I was told 6 months beforehand at the initial consultation not to lift anything heavy and that the recovery period was 2 weeks - although some women need less time and some need more. Nothing was said about when you can resume sexual activity and I've read different things rsnging from 5 days to 4 weeks.

How fo you feel now Destin? I see you are 2 weeks post UAE. I can't believe they had to get approval for pain meds from an on call doctor! It should have all been ready for you. I really feel for you. I read your other post and you've had a dreadful time of it you poor thing. Are you in the US? I'm in the UK.

Thanks Vivienne. Yes that's what we did in the end. My GP wrote me a sic note for an extra 7 days. Really, some hospitals don't believe in making things easy for patients! Even the radiologist said 2 weeks but no, the doctor on the gynae ward knew better!

HI MsManc, I'm in the US. Yes I feel these Doctors are being ridiculous. I'm 2 weeks out and feel 100% better. I rest when I get tired and I get up and walk around the house so I could heal faster and I think that was the answer. I see my GYN in April and I can't wait to let her know how disappointed I am in the aftercare of my procedure. And yes I haven't no restrictions but have read to wait at least a month for sexual activity, I'm just glad I did my research and didn't listen to the radiologists on no restrictions at all. My energy level is coming back to normal and I'm starting to feel like myself again. Thank God! Thanks for caring 😉

      Hi MsManc,

Thank you for sharing! Like you,I've gone through similar events, especially with the high blood (I've had no experience with hypertension prior).

Anyhow, I'm curious to the Esmya. What exactly is that? How does it help?

Thank you in advance, for your response smile

Thanks for sharing! I have my UFE procedure scheduled for next week. I'm so nervous! Your post was really informative.

I was nervous too but everyone's experience is different. Ask all your questions you can think of. Even if you think is a dumb question ask it anyways. It's best to be prepared than not. Good Luck, please post your experience.

How are you doing? It's your first week right?

    • Posted

Actually it's 4 weeks today and I'm doing great. Thanks for asking.

Glad you're doing well. You are further along than I am. It's been 15 days for me but I'm finding I'm still so tired lately. Did you experience the same and for that long?

    • Posted

Yes I did but I just took it easy and enjoyed the rest. Going to bed early and sleeping late. 3 months on back to normal life I miss that time. So sleep when you need to and take it easy. 😁
